  1. It is more likely because of a lack of magnesium. Low calcium usually goes along with low magnesium levels. And both could be caused by low vitamin D levels. Most people with osteoporosis have extremely low vitamin D levels (due to malabsorption from damaged villi in our case, of course), and as a result can't absorb calcium and magnesium. Plus, low vitamin...
  2. Still, dogs and cats aren't meant to eat any grain at all, and it isn't good for them, gluten or not. But there are plenty of dogs that are gluten intolerant (probably all of them to some degree). Dogs and cats are carnivores, and the only reason wheat or corn is put into their food is, that it is cheaper than actually giving them what they need.
  3. I say your daughter just thought it was normal to have those problems before, and is now aware that they are not. If her tests come back negative (with the high false negative rate, very possible), have her tested by Enterolab. That is what I did with my youngest daughter, who refused to try the gluten-free diet without proof that she needed to be on it...
  4. Meline there is no way in the world that a week on gluten will allow you to have a positive biopsy. It is a useless thing to do, and the only thing it will achieve is to make you ill, and your eczema to flare up. If your doctor is telling you that you should be on a gluten-free diet no matter what, why don't you just tell him that is what you will do,...
  5. After you've been on a gluten-free diet for months, a week or two of gluten will inevitably result in another negative biopsy/blood work. You would need to be back on the equivalent of four slices of bread a day for at least three to six months to even have a chance of a valid test. For some people it would take a lot longer. NOT a good thing to do! I...
  6. You can buy gluten-free food everywhere, unless you have decided that you need to replace all of the gluten foods with equivalent gluten-free ones. Meat, vegetables, fruits, fish are all naturally gluten-free! If you stick to the basics, you should not need to spend a lot more than before being diagnosed. Besides, in order to heal faster, you should do...
  7. It sure sounds like you were glutened!
  8. High fructose corn syrup is one of the WORST sugars out there. It is more unhealthy than just normal white sugar and should be avoided at all cost. Open Original Shared Link I can't do the 'raw foods thing', because I can't tolerate too much raw food at a time. A few carrots once in a while, and a (peeled) pear every day or every second day is it. I...
  9. That sounds great, and very healthy! Olive oil really shouldn't be heated, as it becomes toxic at high temperatures. But coconut oil is extremely heat stable, and is the best cooking oil there is.
  10. Julie, that is hilarious, that got the first really good laugh out of me today. Thanks for sharing.
  11. And lack of enough saturated and mono-unsaturated fats. It was found that men on low-fat diets had a much higher incidence of colon cancer, while women on low-fat diets had a 50% higher chance of getting breast cancer. That is another thing. Not enough fat can cause constipation as well. And using only vegetable fat leads to disease, too. Our bodies need...
  12. I am right now reading a book called 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' by Gary Taube. A real eye opener! It confirms a lot of other research I have done over the years. Plus, Gary is a scientific journalist and has access to information I wouldn't be able to get my hands on. There has been lots of research and trials done on which foods are good for you and...
  13. Will you be putting a link to your blog into your profile, so we can check it out?
  14. You know, your little guy may be such a picky eater because eating food makes his tummy hurt! There is lots of food he can still eat, really. All fruit, meat, vegetables (you should also eliminate dairy for at least a while, as it can stop you from healing, and the same goes for soy). There are quite a few gluten-free cereals, rice or almond milk can replace...
  15. Hi, and welcome to these boards. Those blood tests are not all that reliable and yield many false negatives. Some people here had negative blood work and positive biopsies. So, you may still have celiac disease. But it sure sounds like you are gluten intolerant, and it doesn't really matter if it is actually officially celiac disease. The treatment is...
  16. Lisa, it is a good paper, definitely nothing horrible about it! I still think you will get a good mark for it. It is too bad that people can't read it anymore now. And you've educated at least your teacher a little on what it is like to have celiac disease, which is worth a lot.

    ARCHIVED Colds

Your immune system needs help to function properly again. Have you been tested for nutritional deficiencies? That would be a good idea. If your essential nutrients are low, your immune system can't function, hence illnesses like the common cold last longer. The nutrients to be tested for are vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, B vitamins (especially vitamins...
  18. It depends on where you live. Here in Canada everything that has to do with the medical system is slow. It took two weeks for me to get my results.
  19. You know what, you can't worry about it now. So, there are a few spots that could be improved on, oh well. I am sure you will get a good mark anyway. It is obvious that you put a lot of effort into it, while a lot of kids write their reports the night before they are due. Try to just let it go. It is out of your hands now.
  20. I advise you to go to the health food store and buy two homeopathic remedies: Nux vomica, and sepia. They really help me when glutened. Nux vomica helps with indigestion, and sepia with inflammation. I don't think you ought to eat any gluten-free replacement foods like cereal right now at all, until your digestive system calms down. If I was you, I would...
  21. Lisa, since it is very likely that your teacher doesn't have a clue about celiac disease, he/she won't know it is inaccurate in some places. But backing up statements by references is always needed when doing a report like that.
  22. It sounds like you may have an allergy to wheat and/or gluten as well as a gluten intolerance. I get the same problem, but not everybody with gluten intolerance/celiac disease has it.
  23. I have no idea on how to bake bread with a bread machine. I just want to say that it may be risky to bake with a used bread machine, since it is most likely that gluten bread was baked in it before. Others here baked bread with bread machines and will likely have an idea what to do.
  24. What nonsense that you don't have pain with celiac disease! Before I figured out that my problem was gluten, I went to the ER with such intense pain that I thought I was dying! I had another one during that summer (2005) but didn't bother with the ER that time, because they were no help the first time. I've never had that horrible pain again after I started...
  25. Its a punch. Make sure he takes it BESIDE an active blister. Some dermatologists haven't got a clue how to do a biopsy for DH. Mine didn't, he took the biopsy right in the middle of the rash, and I didn't have an active blister. He declared that I definitely don't have DH, since the biopsy was inevitably negative due to his cluelessness (and maybe I don't...
