ARCHIVED ? About Diagnosis
Ursa Major replied to tired47's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
In reality, any doctor who knows anything about celiac disease will diagnose you with it if your villi are flattened. You may not see any improvement on the diet because in order to heal you also need to eliminate dairy and soy. False negatives on the blood tests are common and will absolutely not rule out celiac disease. Neither does a negative biopsy, by... -

They sound great, I think I will try them. -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result Help...
Ursa Major replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Even though it would be nice if they listened, there is no guarantee that they will. Some people just prefer not to know so they can keep on eating gluten, even if it will kill them in the end. When I can afford it, I will have the gene test done too, for the same reason you had it done. But it may not do any good. But at least you can try. Just be sure... -
ARCHIVED New To Forum, Daughter's Labs
Ursa Major replied to Jlt18's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your daughter is already 11 and will soon not be a child any longer. I never had a pediatrician for any of my five kids, just saw my family doc with them. It sounds like that would be your best bet with her. Who needs doctors like that arrogant, ignorant ped doc she saw! Many people with dermatitis herpetiformis (caused by celiac disease only) are... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Result Help...
Ursa Major replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think you're right. And of course, just having one celiac disease gene is bad enough, but having the gluten sensitive one as well will likely make it worse. But you have been gluten-free already, right? If it makes you feel better, that is confirmation that you are doing the right thing. -
ARCHIVED New To Forum, Daughter's Labs
Ursa Major replied to Jlt18's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The doctor didn't order all the labs, which is bad. Her IGA is elevated, which could be pointing towards celiac disease. Plus, the blood work is not very reliable anyway and misses many people with celiac disease, and many more with non-celiac gluten intolerance (which is just as bad). Her TSH is elevated. Your lab uses outdated ranges, anything above... -
ARCHIVED Do Restaurants Allergen Charts Take Cross-contamination Into Consideration
Ursa Major replied to sdb-93's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I agree with the previous poster. Most people have never heard of cc, and therefore won't take the necessary precautions when preparing food. You can try to explain it, and ask that the person preparing your food put on new gloves and prepares your food on a surface cleaned right before doing it. You can also ask for your dish to be rewashed. If they are... -
It could be a combination. You should definitely eliminate all dairy for a few months, because, yes, dairy can stop your intestines from healing, as can soy. You can use almond or rice milk (not Rice Dream, it has barley malt) for your cereal, it tastes fine. The reason you have anemia and osteoporosis is, that your intestines can't absorb vital nutrients...

Jason, I understand your dilemma. But think about how much you would enjoy your new job if you get sicker and sicker and lose all energy! You would start hating it very soon, and not soon after you would not be able to do it any more and will have to quit. Right now, while you are trying to figure out your health issues is unfortunately NOT the time to...

ARCHIVED Waiting For Biopsy Results While My Daughter Suffers
Ursa Major replied to clemrobey's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, now that she actually had the biopsy, what is stopping you from just putting her on the gluten-free diet right now? Because, no matter if the biopsy turns out to be positive or negative, you ought to give the diet a try anyway. Both blood work and biopsy are highly unreliable in young children under six, and negative results can NOT rule out celiac... -
I don't think that is advisable. The way they are made is very well thought out so they actually work without restricting blood flow. Plus, they come with detailed instructions on exactly where to apply the bead for pressure. If you don't have it in the right spot, it won't work.

I got the Himalayan salt from Dr. Mercola's website. Before that I used sea salt (unprocessed) for years, which is also good. Just avoid table salt like the plague it is! And you should not limit your salt intake when using natural salt. Use as much as you feel you need to make your food taste right. Your body knows how much is needed. If it tastes too...

Ali, those recommendations about water have been proven to be untrue. You can actually drink too much and thin out your electrolytes as a result, which can cause death due to swelling of the brain. ARCHIVED Negative Test Results For My 2.5 Yr Old Daughter...
Ursa Major replied to mommytoE&E's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your daughter sounds like one of my grandsons. He is a twin, and both of them weighed over seven pounds when born (their combined weight was exactly 15 lb). But at four years of age he was so skinny you could count his ribs. He NEVER had a solid bowel movement in his life until until he went gluten-free. He was extremely emotional and moody. If he got... -
ARCHIVED Salicylates And Lectins Too....?
Ursa Major replied to scotty's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Scotty, you're right, you will have to experiment. As Krispin in the Lectin site says, you may be able to eat some lectins after a year off them. You need to test that. I find I can tolerate limited amounts of rice now. But everything else is still no good. The same goes for the salicylates. You can be sure that Aspirin is a no-no. Oranges are bad, but... -
Yes, you understand correctly. You wear those bracelets the whole time you are actually moving. But if you don't take them off soon after you stop moving, they will make you sick, strangely. They aren't cheap (I've seen price tags from $14.95 to $19.95, which really is outrageous), but ultimately worth it. You find them in pharmacies, and they sell them...

I was told when pregnant with my first child (29 years ago) to lay off salt because of extremely swollen ankles. Now I believe that it wasn't the salt at all that was the problem. If you don't get enough salt your body can't function properly, as it is essential to life. Now, TABLE salt is NOT healthy, and that is of course what is in processed foods....

ARCHIVED My Kid's Got A Great Attitude Despite...
Ursa Major replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow, what an amazing little girl! You certainly have a reason to be proud of her. How disappointing that they had ice cream in honor of her, and she couldn't have it herself! That is very insensitive of her PE teacher. Good thing her regular teacher is there to help her out. -
You would do better to decide to become a 'sit down person' for all meals and skipping the buffet. The chances of cc are too great with buffets. What I did is first of all send them an e-mail for starters a month ahead of the cruise, making them aware of my issues. Then, soon after boarding, I talked to the maitre'd. He made sure that every night after...

I get incredibly sick with motion sickness sometimes, but I have NEVER thrown up because of it (sometimes I wished I would, to feel better). It is much better when driving. But if it is a drive that is more than three hours, I will still arrive feeling groggy and feel that way for up to two days. As a passenger (always in the front seat, I need to be able...

ARCHIVED Negative Test Results For My 2.5 Yr Old Daughter...
Ursa Major replied to mommytoE&E's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As Stacie already said, both blood tests and biopsies are extremely unreliable in young children under six and yield many false negatives. Your daughter has the classical celiac disease symptoms for toddlers. With your family history you might want to put your whole family on the gluten-free diet to see what happens. Most doctors, including GIs (who are... -
ARCHIVED New Philippine Gluten-free Labeling Standard Act
Ursa Major replied to Lan's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Just be aware that the Codex Alimentarius allows food with up to 200 parts per million of gluten to still be declared gluten-free. When of course in fact, they really aren't 100% gluten-free, and some people who are extremely gluten intolerant will react to those foods. They declare wheat starch and wheat germ oil to be gluten-free, but those make many... -
ARCHIVED Pre-test
Ursa Major replied to sandpiper's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
You are right, every single symptom your son has could be caused by gluten. Including the mood swings, depression and tooth discolouration. Let him know that if indeed he has undiagnosed celiac disease, he will eventually end up with worse problems than he already has, including intestinal cancer, if he will keep eating gluten. And that on a gluten... -
ARCHIVED Test Confusion
Ursa Major replied to kim26's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, you know, being 'diagnosed' with IBS really means that your doctor doesn't have a clue what your problem is, and is too lazy and/or ignorant to find out. Your bowels are irritated by SOMETHING, and that is a symptom, and not an illness in itself! A great many of the people here were so-called diagnosed with IBS for years before finally either being... -
ARCHIVED My Trip To Mexico
Ursa Major replied to Ursa Major's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Well, Patti, since you asked, I just changed my avatar to a picture of my bowl. I am asking my husband for the tools to do more mosaic for my birthday (in May), so I can keep up this new hobby. The only issue I have with the bowl is, that I wasn't thinking when I started. I had no clue how you do mosaic before going to the course, and didn't have a plan...
