ARCHIVED Probiodics
Ursa Major replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Have you tried gluten, dairy and soy free? It could be dairy or soy, or a combination of the three. Some people who were diagnosed officially with celiac disease didn't start getting better until eliminating dairy, and some of them had to cut out soy as well before improving. I also get the symptoms you mentioned from nightshade foods (potatoes, tomatoes... -
ARCHIVED Fatigue, Neuropathy & A Reaction To Bread.
Ursa Major replied to ether's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi, and welcome to these boards. Wow, it sounds like you are talking about me when I was your age! I had all the same problems. I say trying the gluten-free diet is an excellent idea. And while you are at it, eliminate dairy and soy as well (they can stop you from healing if you have celiac disease). I know that soy sauce is something hard to avoid... -
I also have severe fibromyalgia with intolerable pain........... But only when I eat gluten, lectins and foods high in salicylates. As long as I don't eat those foods, I am almost pain free. When the pain returns I know I have to cut back on certain foods (there is a threshold to how much I can tolerate, and it is a fine line). Mind you, I can tolerate zero...

ARCHIVED Probiodics
Ursa Major replied to kathy1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't know who you need the probiotic for. Is it for somebody who is gluten-free already? If not, that would be a good start. If that person is still consuming dairy and/or soy, try eliminating it. Dairy is known to cause all the symptoms you mentioned in sensitive individuals. Still, a probiotic can be helpful. Since I am not taking any, I can't... -
ARCHIVED Just Have To Shout For Joy!
Ursa Major replied to crittermom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That is great news! It is so much easier when you have substitutes, then Michael won't feel you force him to be gluten-free against his will. If he has food he loves, he won't even care. -
ARCHIVED I Dont Know What To Think
Ursa Major replied to Abbott50's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, with celiac disease the best and most reliable test is trying the gluten-free diet. Since celiac disease is genetic, your daughter got it through either you or your wife. It appears to be you. There is no way the improvements in your health are coincidental. Horrible stomach noises, sleep problems and rashes are three common symptoms of celiac disease... -
ARCHIVED Would You Have Her Tested?
Ursa Major replied to bananapancake09's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree with happygirl to have her tested. But in addition, even if the tests end up negative, please try the gluten-free diet after testing is completed (and if you still breast feed, you will need to stop eating gluten, because she'll get it through your milk). In children that young the tests are extremely unreliable and the diet trial is the best test... -
All of the above are common celiac disease symptoms, including the weight gain. Your doctor doesn't know what he is talking about. Half of the people with celiac disease will gain weight, not lose it, as weight gain can also be a sign of malnutrition. And again, anemia is one POSSIBLE symptom of celiac disease, but not nearly all of us have that problem...

ARCHIVED New Here, My Baby Might Be Allergic To Gluten? Will She Outgrow It?
Ursa Major replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree that likely both your daughters have at the least a severe gluten intolerance, maybe celiac disease (same treatment, the gluten-free diet). My oldest granddaughter has multiple intolerances. As a baby and young toddler she was covered from head to toe in eczema, which cleared up when a dairy intolerance was discovered, and she was taken off dairy... -
ARCHIVED Do We Really Need To Make Our House gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to katifer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with trying to allow your husband to have gluten foods in his office. Your son would have to wash his hands after seeing your husband there. If you find that somehow the two of you get glutened because of it, then you can still make the office gluten-free as well. Just remember, it isn't healthy to get too paranoid, either. Taking every reasonable... -
That is how I have been pronouncing it. If that is wrong, then we both sound off on that one.

ARCHIVED Do We Really Need To Make Our House gluten-free?
Ursa Major replied to katifer's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The problem is that especially with a 3 year old around, you WILL get glutened. By kisses, messy little hands, crumbs....... Besides, how do you know if your little one isn't gluten intolerant? You might be surprised when you suddenly figure out what gluten did to the child, when symptoms disappear which you didn't know where symptoms (in small children there... -

ARCHIVED Fertile After Going Gluten Free. Suprise!
Ursa Major replied to JENinMICH's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Jen, that is exciting news! And it doesn't surprise me a bit. If your doctor won't check your vitamin and mineral levels, it may be time to find yourself a new doctor. In the meantime, take a good prenatal vitamin that has folic acid in it. -
ARCHIVED Glutened By Bob's Mill?
Ursa Major replied to elmuyloco5's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That's right, if you go to the Bob's Red Mill website and read their story (I have checked out their whole site) you would find that their gluten-free products are made in a different facility from the gluten items. So, if it says gluten-free, it is just that. I agree that with mixes, there are a lot of possibilities other than gluten that could cause... -
ARCHIVED Advice About 12 Year Old
Ursa Major replied to celiacgirls's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Karen, I believe that homeschooling for a while would be a good option. It will help you determine if diet is your daughter's problem, since she won't be able to cheat as easily. Oppositional Defiant Disorder is a crap diagnosis. It used to be called having a difficult kid and you dealt with it. Putting kids who aren't easy to raise on medication to turn... -
ARCHIVED Found Me A New Celiac Friend!
Ursa Major replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How nice for you! I wished I had somebody like that around here. I hope you have other things in common besides celiac disease, as just having celiac disease isn't enough for a friendship (but it is a start). -
ARCHIVED Soaps, Lotions, Shampoos Oh My, Please Help
Ursa Major replied to thumper's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You might just want to start out with Dove products until you did some more research. Personally, I love Dove products, but the reason for that is, that all of the nice natural products in the health food store are very high in salicylates and and make me sick, too. Health food stores have a ton of really nice, natural products. You just have to make... -
ARCHIVED Uk Article On Food Intolerance Study
Ursa Major replied to HouseKat's topic in Publications & Publicity
I don't know what kind of test they used. But declaring the potato the least likely to cause intolerances is nonsense. There are a LOT of people who are intolerant to nightshade vegetables. I am one of them, and two of my grandchildren are the other two people I know in person. We have quite a few of them here on this site. Potatoes will cause me to... -
ARCHIVED Newbie Question: How Long Glutening Before Blood Test?
Ursa Major replied to huevo-no-bueno's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you have been eating a lot of gluten for three years, and have limited gluten for three weeks (but weren't really entirely gluten-free), and have been eating it again for these past days, you probably will still get accurate test results. Just make sure you get the whole panel done. If you want to get the biopsy as well, you will have to continue eating... -
ARCHIVED Super Ez Guideline Help Please!
Ursa Major replied to Mom23boys's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
gfcookie, there are families here were both parents have celiac disease, with both of them also having the genes for it. The likelihood of all their kids having celiac disease is an awful lot higher than 1 in 22. One of my daughter's mother-in-law has celiac disease as well. When it comes from both sides, again, she is watching her kids. And sure enough... -
ARCHIVED Ribbon-like Stools From Colon Spasms Or Pellet Stool
Ursa Major replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Susie, you may not have seen my response when you replied last. Because I was saying that I DID have ribbonlike stools from being glutened. By the way, you may need to go dairy free, too. -
ARCHIVED Celiac Not Starting Until Mid 40's?
Ursa Major replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Ali, while some of what you say is very valid and good advice, some of it is not true. I have been gluten-free for two years and two months now (and off many other foods that I am intolerant to, and I rarely eat anything with sugar). My hypothyroidism is NOT any better, and I still need to take thyroid pills. The same goes for my adrenal problems. It is... -
ARCHIVED Celiac With An Enzyme Deficiency Too?
Ursa Major replied to skikat's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He is still a baby and his body may not be ready for certain foods. Why don't you just forgo peaches, apricots and blueberries for a while and just give him other foods instead, like apple sauce? -
I started having tinnitus about three years ago. I don't believe that it gets louder at night. It is just that it is so quiet at night, especially when lying down and not moving, that the ringing SEEMS louder. It is much easier to ignore in the daytime when you are busy and there are noises all around you (and you make enough of them, doing stuff). I find...
