  1. I get the ribbon-like stool after being glutened (for a few days after the D is over), and when I eat potatoes or rice (which I shouldn't be eating, either, but do once in a while anyway). But if I stick to only foods that I am not intolerant to, my stools are perfectly normal. Oh, and I'll get the pellets also when eating things I shouldn't (when I...
  2. Hurray, one enlightened doctor! It is nice to know that there are actually some out there. Let us know your results.
  3. The biggest problem with lotions is, that you apply them with your hands. You also prepare food and eat with your hands. And if you use the lotion for dry hands, then it wouldn't make any sense to then have to wash your hands with soap and water to wash off the lotion, so you don't gluten yourself. Also, if you apply it to your face for instance, and then...
  4. My oldest daughter told me that maybe her sister (one year younger) defies me and purposely glutens herself maybe because I am too pushy, and try too hard to make her see what is good for her. I think that you might be making the same mistake as me (out of love, because we hate seeing our kids/parents knowingly hurt themselves). By sending them lists and...
  5. That your doctor claims you can't have celiac disease with constipation REALLY proves to me that he knows nothing about celiac disease. Because it can go either way. Both diarrhea and constipation are common symptoms of celiac disease (I used to alternate between them all my life). The same goes for weight. Half of people with celiac disease lose weight,...
  6. When I started the gluten-free diet I had chronic diarrhea for six months and was unable to tolerate any supplements at all. They would give me dreadful stomach cramps and D for six months into the gluten-free diet, and I still had to be careful for several months after that. Taking oral supplements at the stage you're at is likely useless and a waste...
  7. I am afraid I completely agree with ravenwoodglass. Just tell them once that you realize all their health woes are related to gluten. That you know that they are killing themselves with it, and that it really hurts you to see them doing this to themselves. And that you would appreciate it if they would refrain from complaining about health issues that are...
  8. Are you still consuming dairy and soy? Either (or both) of those could be your problem. Dairy is known to cause horrible eczema. My oldest granddaughter used to be covered in eczema from head to toe, she looked like she had scales. It completely cleared up within weeks, to where she has the most beautiful skin now, after dairy was removed from her diet (incidentally...
  9. Yes, you can have relief that fast. In 2005 I had chronic, horrible, watery D for six whole months, with cramping so bad that I went to the ER once, because I thought I had a heart attack (they sent me home after five hours, telling me I was fine, that I had 'only' severe bowel and stomach cramps). When I figured it out and stopped eating gluten, the D...
  10. Hi and welcome here from me as well. Tiffany made a good point there. One of my daughters has a mother-in-law with celiac disease, and she cheats whenever she feels like it and is willing to take the consequences (which in her opinion are just gastro symptoms that go away after a couple of days). I have tried telling her about long term consequences, but...
  11. First of all, if they didn't actually do a biopsy but rather just took pictures, celiac disease has NOT been ruled out. Because most of the time you absolutely can't tell if there is damage with the naked eye, but need a microscope to see it. Any doctor who claims you can't have celiac disease by just looking is an idiot. Secondly, osteoporosis is one...
  12. You were right, and that person who you talked to is the one being ridiculous, not you. Even though theoretically wheat grass shouldn't contain gluten, the risk of contamination is too high to bother with it. Others have tried using wheat grass and reacted to it. It is your choice if you want to try it. But personally, I wouldn't do it (and the same...
  13. I agree that you need to stop taking those pills. If you want to take fish oil (cod liver oil is advised in the winter, because it contains vitamin D), take Carlson's oil. It is the best out there, and doesn't taste fishy.
  14. It really should say, "The equivalent of four slices of bread a day". Meaning that includes pasta, cookies, cake, flour thickened gravies, and most processed foods that have wheat as a thickener. If you investigate your diet right now, I bet you'll find that you eat much more gluten than you realize. Just keep eating gluten until your test, I don't...
  15. There are many, many doctors who don't know a single thing about nutrition or celiac disease. You can start out with just describing how you react to certain foods. Then, if this doctor suggests that you may be gluten and dairy intolerant and wants to test you for celiac disease, happily agree and be glad you found a doctor who knows what he is doing. If...
  16. Hi Susie, this is my opinion: You had severe damage when diagnosed with sky high antibody numbers. After nine months the damage to your villi has lessened, your symptoms are mostly resolved, and your numbers are coming down. In refractory sprue your antibody numbers go down to normal, while the villi will stay completely flat. Plus, the diarrhea won...

    ARCHIVED Blood Test

Have your mom come with you to a doctor's appointment and DEMAND celiac disease testing for you! You have the symptoms, and others in your family have celiac disease, including your dad. Any doctor worth anything would test you with your genetic background. If he still refuses, you need to see a new doctor.
  18. Some foods other than gluten that give me D are rice, eggs and potatoes. The way to do an elimination diet in such a way that you still get enough nutrition is, to go back to basics. For a week just eat chicken, vegetables like carrots, rutabaga, green salad..... nothing exotic. With fruits for snacks. Maybe buckwheat cereal in the morning. Just avoid...
  19. You know that Enterolab does gene testing, too? They charge a ton less than other places for just gene testing. Even having the whole panel done for your son (including the gene testing) is less expensive than just gene testing from regular labs, from what I have heard.
  20. Are you still consuming dairy and/or soy? Those could be the problem. If you have already eliminated those two, it could be another intolerance. You may have to try an elimination diet to figure out what is causing your problems.
  21. Hi Deborah, and welcome to these boards. Your experience sounds very similar to mine. I am very intolerant to gluten, but can really not tolerate any starches at all (amongst other things). I just stepped on the scales a couple of days ago and got a nasty shock. And realized that I had been backsliding and eating (gluten-free) crackers, cookies, bread...
  22. The gluten-free diet is perfectly healthy, and you don't miss anything by cutting out gluten grains. As long as you eat meat, vegetables, fruits, nuts you should be perfectly fine. The value of nutrition from grains is highly overrated, and of course, the grain farmers do their utmost in advertising to make you believe you need grains for health. Taking...
  23. Rachelle, I think that the eczema cleared up and he was eating well are definitely signs that gluten was a problem. Sometimes it takes a while for the bowels to settle down, so a solid bm after three weeks is still good. And then immediately having D again after eating those pretzels......... I say that is no coincidence. I see in your signature that he...
  24. I see he 'drinks his milk'. That could be a huge problem right there. He may be dairy intolerant and should try eliminating milk. In reality you get NO calcium from milk, as the enzyme that would let us use the calcium is destroyed during pasteurization. In a study some scientists did they found that North America has the highest rate of osteoporosis...
  25. I am not sure if there is such a thing as 'subclinical celiac disease'. You may just have celiac disease, which hasn't progressed to the stage of destroyed villi yet (but starts out with inflammation). Which would also explain the negative blood work. It is very likely that you will have to eliminate dairy and soy as well as gluten in order to feel better...
