  1. Thanks so much for all your thoughts and prayers! Amazing how it can all help so much... The nutrtional feed that John is getting is called Resource 2.0, by Novartis. I have heard that it is, in fact, gluten-free, but I cannot help but suspect...If it really is gluten-free, then we know for sure that John is not gluten-intolerant, as this is the only thing...
  2. Wishing all of my gluten-free buddies here the happiest and healthiest in the new year. Thanks so much for all your advice, support and laughter!
  3. Yes, the medical team is aware of everything that could be causing the bloody stools (everything except celiac, they would state, I'm sure). He has had, I believe, ulcer-like problems in the past...and there is something ELSE that I have not heard connected to undiagnosed celiac...ulcers...anyone had that connection made? The reasons I strongly suspect...
  4. I wasn't sure where to put this topic, as it deals with a couple of things. I'll start with the symptom part. A very sad story: three months ago my 56-year old brother- in- law John had a massive ischemic stroke. Thirty percent of his brain is now dead--so tragic. He is in a long-term care hospital now, and we know he won't be getting out. Ever since...
  5. I've got a question (or questions) to ask you all, and I'm asking it on behalf of my good friend who has a catering business and wants to branch out, go bigger, focus on baked goods and move into gluten-free products. I thought the perfect place to start my market research was here: What gluten-free processed food item do you wish was available on the market...
  6. It is, of course, the only answer! I remember feeling left out when I first joined and didn't know what some of these short forms meant. Discouraging their use is the polite way to go. Have we really become so pressed for time (or lazy) that we cannot manage to type out a word in its entirety?
  7. I think we should make a new acronym for husbands, to clear up this possible confusion with dematitis herpetiformous. How about TGATH (that guy around the house)? Or MGG (my Greek God?) ...I wish....Hmmmmm.....
  8. I was diagnosed with celiac a year ago and had never had any obvious gastrointestnal symptoms either, until I was gluten-free for a while and accidentally got glutened. For the first time, I experienced the bloating and abdominal pains I kept hearing about. This often happens to people who go gluten-free and haven't presented classic GI symptoms--their...
  9. The front page of our local paper this morning featured a big photograph of a guy surfing along the Rideau rapids here in Ottawa (in a drysuit, mind you). Right beside this photo was another one of a mom and her daughter making this big snowman on their lawn...they're in Vancouver. The big caption read, "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?" Hey, nothing as...
  10. Yes, the fact that he sells nutritional "stuff" on his site was something I had some trouble with at first. Now I just ignore any of his periodic sales pitches, and I do realize that any products that he makes money from go directly into his research/website. Tarnalberry, I respect your knowledge and opinions on things, so I am curious--what about Mercola...
  11. Joseph Mercola has a feature on celiac in his latest newsletter which is, as usual, a no-nonsense, informative piece that will grab the attention of any subscriber out there who may have some subclinical symptoms (and those that we never hear about). He starts the piece off with a long quote from an article in USA Today, which I will take the time to read...

    ARCHIVED Dr. Mercola

Ditto for me. Mixed type. His diet is wonderful for my diabetes, too. I can take full advantage of all his recipes, as I only have gluten and sugar to worry about. His Total Health book is a great resource of recipes for anyone, and every one I've tried has been great.

    ARCHIVED Dr. Mercola

I've been a subscriber to Mercola's website for some time and I've gotten to really respect him. I am actively exploring his accupressure technique called EFT (actually, it was developed by Gary Craig, but Dr. Mercola practices it and has a wealth of information on it). So far, I've seen some really encouraging results. So I, too, would get in to see him...
  14. Hi, Melody! Welcome! Something else to keep in mind: The celiac blood panel can (and my understanding is that, at least in North America, it is not an infrequent happening) give false negatives. The biopsy can, as well. My father tested "negative" on the celiac panel, and continued to feel lousy. I convinced him to go gluten-free (after all, it is...
  15. Yep, these autoimmune disorders ABSOLUTELY tend to happen in clusters...the number of people with three or four conditions is just too big to be a coincidence! I have type one diabetes, celiac and most recently hypothyroidism. Many endocrinologists run the celiac panel on their diabetic patients every couple of years, and thyroid tests even more frequently...
  16. Oh, wow...what an enormous loss. I looked so forward to reading anything gfp posted, and felt lucky to be sharing a forum with someone as erudite and well-informed. Ursula, I'm very tempted to pm you, but I'm afraid you may be inundated with emails from people wanting to know why he's gone. Is there some way you can generally inform us all on here, without...
  17. Wow...the things we take for granted. I'm also Canadian, and all endoscopic proceedures are fully covered here by the health care system. Don't need to worry about insurance...incredible, I had no idea what you guys in the States without insurance are having to pay for this.
  18. Well, tonight should be very interesting gluten-wise, with all our trick-or-treaters bringing home tons of irresistable stuff....
  19. Again..... EEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
  20. Talk about eeeeewwwwwww......! Princess Leah with Chewbacca....in that way....again, eeeewwwwwwww! Maybe that already was a subtle, underlying theme in the first movies. I must look at them again, and watch how those two interact. A furtive glance across the spaceship control room...
  21. Karen, this has been a MAJOR highjack, and I have to apologise...Okay, let's tie together this incredible avatar Karen has treated us to with our new phrase. I did allude to the kitten looking like it had just frisked a wookie. I'm afraid that's the best I can do. One more thing...Richard, I must share with you that when I read your last post, "that...
  22. A frisky wookie....that conjures up very disturbing mind pictures. Thank heavens that George Lucas et al never decided to explore that kind of storyline. Some love scenes just shouldn't take place.
  23. As I've read many others say here, not only can there be false negatives with the blood panel, but the biopsy can also not show any damaged villi when, in fact, damage is there. You have about twenty-two feet of winding intestine for them to examine; a good GI will take many samples throughout it, but many only snip off one or two pieces that are not sections...
  24. I actually told that orange-shirted guy about our new phrase-coining project, and he actually went out to find some sort of Chewbacca figure somewhere that he could frisk in front of thousands, to really get the expression going. Now, what else can we do? I've approached my nine and thirteen-year olds, and really got stares from them. Could we somehow...
  25. Boy, this illness certainly takes the spontanaeity out of our relationships, doesn't it? Man, toothbrushes on our pillows...Gone are the days of suddenly throwing my arms around DH and kissing him silly...sigh....
