ARCHIVED Does Wheat Allergy = Celiac Disease?
RiceGuy replied to fee fee's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the board! So glad you found this site, as I'm sure you will benefit. As for whether your wheat allergy equates to Celiac Disease, IMHO I'd say it's likely. I don't know if there can be a wheat allergy without it since AFAIK that means the immune system responds. That response will sooner or later cause damage. However, does it really matter... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Drink Too Much Water?
RiceGuy replied to covsooze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
About salt and iodine - salt in its natural state DOES have iodine. It was in the 1800s that the US began kiln-drying salt to increase production. The intense heat (something like 400 degrees) destroys the iodine. People began getting goiter, and it was becoming an epidemic. So, when the matter was investigated, they realized that the iodine was no longer... -
Hmmm...the nightshades did that to me for sure...
-
Well, this is probably not the cause in your case I guess, but for awhile I was having all sorts of pains. Recently I found out it was due to nightshades. It has taken weeks for things to get only partly cleared up too. I wish I had a definitive answer for you, but the relationship to the gallbladder seems pretty strong. Though I don't know what that could...

ARCHIVED Bleu Cheese
RiceGuy replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh boy, won't this ever end?! Look, all I'm pointing out is that a lot of people have an allergic reaction to molds. That includes penicillin. It's just like a product label stating "this product contains soy", or "this product may contain peanuts". Why do they do that since both of them are regarded as healthy, good things to eat? Even gluten-filled foods... -
ARCHIVED Company Sent Me A Check
RiceGuy replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
If that happened to me, I'd definitely feel it is a payoff to keep me quiet. I'd think they are trying to prevent a lawsuit. But really it depends on how much the check is worth. You'll have to decide that one for yourself. Yeah, but do they know that for sure? -
ARCHIVED U.s. Rice Crops Contaminated By Unapproved Gmo Rice
RiceGuy posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, the title basically says it, but here's a link to just one of many recent articles: Open Original Shared Link I know I react to GMO corn, so I wonder how many of us will/have a reaction to the contaminated rice. But how will we know for sure? -
ARCHIVED Bleu Cheese
RiceGuy replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh? Well here's my exact words, in which I say no such thing: Well, AFAIK the blue stuff in the cheese is mold, and that can really cause all sorts of reactions in people. I know I couldn't ever have anything like that at all. There are a number of potentially toxic substances that come with the mold. I would not recommend blue cheese to any Celiac. Anyway... -
ARCHIVED Bleu Cheese
RiceGuy replied to Sweetfudge's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As so appropriately noted by Lillyth, I didn't say everyone should give up foods that disagree with me. Read again if you please. I simply don't recommend foods which are so "borderline" as mold and such. That's an opinion, and still isn't an absolute. The more permeable intestinal walls are obviously letting more things through, so should we not take this... -
Well, I can't speak from experience with this exact thing, but I did have something similar once or twice. I had tried eating pumpkin seeds, and it gave me a very strange tight sort of feeling in my throat which was very uncomfortable. That lasted over 24 hours, and was very unpleasant in a way much like you describe. However, I doubt this is the cause in...

ARCHIVED Millet Made My Son Sick?
RiceGuy replied to jenad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I read recently some people don't tolerate Flax too well. Depending on how much it has, and how it is prepared, I guess that could cause a reaction too. Flax oil apparently goes rancid quickly, so once the seeds are ground to make the bread, it would need refrigeration I think. Do they say to refrigerate it, and what's the expiration date? I just had millet... -
ARCHIVED Is It Possible To Drink Too Much Water?
RiceGuy replied to covsooze's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Extreme thirst was one of the symptoms I had from gluten. Even a very small amount would make me tremendously thirsty for 24-48 hours. No amount of water would quench it either. From that and other signs I eventually began to put two and two together. Anyway, I suppose it might be an unrecognized glutening, or something else to which you have developed... -
ARCHIVED Enterolab Or York
RiceGuy replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, it took six months for me to see any difference at all from the gluten-free diet. Heck, after years of damage, just how fast could things turn around? So with regard to patience, I'd say give it time. I did miss the wheat stuff I had been eating, but after awhile the cravings went away and it no longer interests me. I could care less, except for when... -
ARCHIVED Waiting Time For Specialist?
RiceGuy replied to sore joints's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hello sore joints. I just thought I'd reply after noticing your member name. Maybe my comments will help you, or someone else. I began having joint/muscle pains, twitching, spasms, and weakness several months ago, and only just weeks ago figured out what was causing it. There were also certain intestinal troubles which is what lead me to discover what... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Vegan
RiceGuy replied to LonelyWolf307's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
It's not going to be listed on the label. It occurs in the yeast naturally, as free glutamic acid. -

ARCHIVED Undigested Food
RiceGuy replied to Corkdarrr's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That's the malabsorption thing. I find it ever more important to chew thoroughly. I tend to gobble which of course just makes things tougher on the gut. Eat more slowly and chew a real lot - until it's like totally mush before swallowing. It has taken me quite awhile to see any real improvement, but there seems to be progress. It's just very slow. -
ARCHIVED Am I Paranoid?
RiceGuy replied to taz sharratt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Wow. The more you write about your child, the more convincing it is that he is gluten intolerant/Celiac. It sounds like your husband won't be convinced without blood tests being done, but either way I'd still try the diet since the tests often give false-negatives. I can also relate to your husband wanting him to be "normal". When I was little my father said... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Vegan
RiceGuy replied to LonelyWolf307's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I would NOT recommend that for a Celiac, much less anyone really. Though for someone with a relatively healthy gut it may not hurt so much. There are several reasons, one of which is the MSG it contains. When the gut doesn't filter toxins out so well, it important all-the-more to be careful about such things. There are other substances which aren't healthy... -
I guess my only comment on this right now is that I hope you are aware that Flax oil is very perishable, and should be sold and kept in refrigerated brown glass containers only. You can freeze it too, though still it is recommended to use it a short time. I seem to recall six weeks being suggested, though I'd have to look it up again. If it begins to go rancid...

ARCHIVED Am I Paranoid?
RiceGuy replied to taz sharratt's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Perhaps your husband needs to read a few posts on this board. Then MAYBE he'll turn around. Look at it this way: What is the risk of trying the gluten-free diet? What are the risks of NOT trying it? However, thrush is a yeasty beastie AFAIK, so I'd recommend treating that from the inside, not the outside. If it's candida or anything like it then you... -
Well, I guess malabsorption would go along with a leaky gut, though perhaps less often the other way around. So in that case you'd be passing somewhat undigested food. Magnesium is rather important for proper absorption, so that's one thing I'd suggest for any Celiac. For symptoms, I'd have to think it depends on the foods you eat, and what you are more...

ARCHIVED Candy Or Chips
RiceGuy replied to Rikki Tikki's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Besides possible cross-contamination, there are a number of chips that also have hidden MSG in them. Just look up the symptoms that causes and you may be surprised. It's a major cause of Diabetes for one thing, which has been known since the seventies. Yet the packaged food companies (and sadly, also gluten-free food companies) use MSG as a "flavor enhancer... -
ARCHIVED Nuts
RiceGuy replied to JeanC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, it may depend on the type of nut. Do you mean tree nuts, peanuts, or both? If you want to avoid additives, then I'd suggest the varieties which are in the metal/paperboard cans. When they aren't flavored, they typically don't have all sorts of stuff added. For some reason the ones in clear containers always seem to have all sorts of junk added, even... -
ARCHIVED Beets, Pink Urine And Celiac Connection?
RiceGuy replied to Jennas-auntie's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oddly enough, this one I've not had to my recollection at all. I've always loved beets too. Don't know about how long they'd have to cook to alter the effect, but as a child most of the beets I had were fresh from the garden. In fact, my mother would remind me not to be frightened by it, so I guess it happens to her. I have tried to get it into her head she...
