  1. I like celery, carrots, turnips, and onions along with potatoes. Really almost any veggie works well if you like it. Once (years ago) I made pepper steak, took one bite, and had a strange urge to put prunes in it. Then I found out that's common in some parts of the world! Freaky...
  2. Interesting. I was just reading that mayonnaise can contain gluten, apparently because of the vinegar. So maybe pickles do too. I haven't ever looked since I generally avoid vinegar because it promotes yeast growth.
  3. Well, as you know doctors aren't well informed about nutrients, unless they specialize in it, from what I've been reading. I stopped listening to doctors long ago, since they only made things worse. As for iron, many of the foods you mentioned have it in various amounts, like spinach, brown rice, etc. You just need enough vitamin C to help the body absorb...
  4. Many recommend keeping a food journal. Mark down everything she eats, the time, etc. Then when symtoms arise, you'll have a better picture of things, and will hopefully see a pattern. If she has had any of those items recently that commonly cause reactions, I'd start there. Go for the top allergy suspects first (unless she hasn't eaten any of it). Oh,...
  5. Well, as you may know already, there can be hidden sources of gluten in foods, skin/hair care products, and contamination from foods being served to others or while stored in the fridge. Other possible problematic foods can be soy, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts, corn, yeast, sugars...the list is practically endless. It depends on the individual, but those...
  6. Wow, I can relate to the muscle aches and weakness. But for me I think it's worse while I eat rice. However, I think the reason is something other than the energy from carbs. I'm thinking the rice is either contaminated (since this is a fairly recent development), or the gut is just tired of dealing with it. I also cut out potatoes at the same time just to...
  7. Ah, the corrosion I can understand. Good point. But yeah, I was thinking of just sprinkling it on finished dishes, just like salt or pepper, which is why I thought of the pepper mill things. I don't know what else I'd put it on. I haven't had time to get fancy in the kitchen in awhile I understand it's best uncooked anyway.
  8. Points well taken. I guess it's the deception, not just the possible lower quality product that is upsetting. It really should be as good as the label indicates, if not better. So, I guess even Europe doesn't know where the olives grew, only that the oil is the grade it is advertized to be. If good oil goes from outside Italy for example, then sold to Europe...
  9. Wow. I have noticed a little difference from brand to brand, but not much so far. I generally stick to a small set of brands so I hope those have been good ones. Thanks for the heads-up ChelsE! Hmmm...I wonder what you have really been getting then. I guess it isn't going to appeal to everyone though.
  10. I just ran into something about grinding salt, and how natural salt which still has moisture requires a grinder with an all ceramic grinding mechanism. That seems to back up my guess about the ceramic and the oily seeds. Here's a hand-held one with ceramic grinders claiming to work for Flax and other stuff: Open Original Shared Link
  11. Wow, thanks for letting me know about the problems of using a mortar & pestle for this! So I guess then the seeds are too tough to eat whole? Thanks for the link too. I'll keep these all in mind. Any experience with how long the grinders typically last? Here's one of the ones I found advertized for Flax: Open Original Shared Link I've never purchased...
  12. Interesting. I recently read that fiber helps deal with fats. Apparently, bile acids from the liver are used to break down fats, and the fiber combines with the bile and carries it out of the body. From all I read, eating proper amounts of fats and fiber also helps lower cholesterol, because the liver uses it to make the bile acids. So, maybe fiber would...
  13. Thanks. I was wondering if anyone had tried one of those. I saw one actually advertized as a Flax Mill, and it said it was good for other stuff too. It's about 6 1/2 inches tall, or something like that, and was 50 bucks. At the moment I'm still a bit skeptical of them. I did also find a hand-held pepper/spice grinder (and I think it also mentioned Flax seeds...
  14. Wow CarlaB! That echos much of what I experienced. I also discovered the yeasty beasties long before the gluten. As for garlic, I have been wondering about that lately. I do like it, though generally I just don't bother to add it into a meal. It's true it is good for the yeast issues. I recall if onions irritate your eyes a lot, it can be because of a...
  15. For me it was mostly intestinal issues - everything turned to cement, and stayed that way The "big D" would have been welcomed. I have yet to get a glutening AFAIK, since I never eat anything I haven't prepared for myself from scratch. My last experiment showed an even worse reaction than when I was eating wheat regularly, which is apparently quite...
  16. Ah, you replied fast! Yeah, I did get the impression that you probably aren't having serious problems with the way you eat right now. Glad to see one of us is doing well! While far better, I have a looooong way to go yet. Oh, I just read the other day that tea can have certain absorption-inhibiting effects depending on when you consume it. I think...
  17. Interesting. I just looked it up: Here's the whole page: Open Original Shared Link And another interesting page about wheat allergies: Open Original Shared Link CarlaB: I won't lecture you, but most or all grain alcohols contain gluten AFAIK. There is one I've heard about, but I don't ever drink so I don't have any details on that. Also...
  18. Hi. I have started looking into Flax, and so far it looks like the whole freshly-ground seeds are the best, most healthy way to use Flax. The magnesium and fatty acid content among other things looks like it will benefit me right now. So how best to grind them is my next question. There are suggestions to use a coffee grinder, but that seems like overkill...
  19. Hi everybody. I ran into an article, and immediately thought of this board, so here I am to post a link. I hope I don't have Crohn's Disease anyway, but if this where the only way to treat it, ugh! Again, this isn't for anyone who is grossed out easily, nor if you're currently enjoying a meal. 20. I just heard it on the news too. Here's a link to an AP article: Open Original Shared Link
  21. Ooops...you're correct. I don't know why I didn't notice the entire list of stuff you can't have.
  22. OK. I guess I agree with angel_jd1 on the small bags. Last I had a large quantity though, it came in a nice clear plastic container. Thanks for your feedback on the screen name It was the first thing that came to mind, so I used it. Not surprising since we are what we eat - I must have rice on the brain! I don't know if "Rice Girl" would have really...
  23. Short answer: You cannot have a "hard diagnosis". The total gluten-free diet is the best test known. It is often said that a gluten-free diet can make test results show a false negative. In your case, if the gluten has been there even in small amounts, then the immune response should still be detectable. That's my opinion based on all that I've read thus...
  24. I don't know if it relates at all, as I haven't heard of the type of sores you describe, but have you looked into yeast overgrowth? The sinus conditions might indicate this also. Try a search on the board for that. You might relate to what others have experienced.
  25. The symptoms you describe also sound like those caused by the adenovirus. Check Open Original Shared Link for a good description. Given the link between the virus and gluten intolerance, I'd suggest a gluten-free diet immediately, if you haven't already started. Don't worry about the pasta or other foods. You can use Tinkyada rice pasta, which is truly...
