  1. Personally, I didn't find the shirt offensive. It was free publicity regarding gluten. Even though it didn't educate the public about Celiac Disease, it still made people aware of gluten. You have to start somewhere. Would a shirt saying, "Are you sugar free?", be offensive to diabetics?
  2. It's quite possible the offenders ARE ignorant about Celiac Disease. It's also possible it's simply another case of AFAB (Anything For A Buck). Either scenario is a possibility.
  3. I'm also outraged. Sadly, however, I am NOT surprised. I have suspected this for a long time. All too often, this is how much of the world works. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Mostly, I find this very, very, very sad. Cyclinglady, I DO share your pain and frustration. Many hugs to you!
  4. I don't understand the significance of this article. i understood it to be common for Celiac to rear its ugly head post-op (after any surgery). It happened to me after knee surgery. I guess anytime we can get a case report written up, it can only serve to benefit our community.
  5. Wow, that is sooooo unfortunate that you have to tolerate that abuse! I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I guess the saving grace may be that you are blazing trails for the rest of us Celiacs. Little comfort, I am sure, but I guess it's our collective path until we get enough understanding in the pubic domain. Sorry i can't offer any personal...
  6. littlesista, You are NOT being silly! The vast majority of people have not been educated about Celiac Disease. Each time this coworker spouts incorrect info about being gluten free, it puts doubt into others's minds about how you need to be in order to REALLY be gluten free. It makes your job (which you never asked for) that much harder when you do...
  7. Hi Lisa, I can definitely relate to you. Only 2 people in my extended family were supportive of my Celiac diagnosis and lifestyle requirements. You are right about choosing a new "family" now. I had Celiac for 60 years prior to diagnosis. Lots of varying symptoms. I also had eyelid rashes that looked much like yours. I also had swelling around...

    ARCHIVED Integrative Medicine?

I have been to one. I think the success is totally dependent on the "quality" of the doctor (just like anything else, there are "good ones" and "bad ones"). Also, I think it depends on how many alternative therapies you have already tried. They might suggest acupuncture, rolfing, NAET, yoga, meditation, diet changes, exercises, etc. Basically, they combine...
  9. HI icelandgirl! Sometimes a goofy doctor is a very good thing. Might help you to relax during the upcoming procedure. I actually know somebody who had that procedure done. It was a couple decades ago and my friend was in his 30's; but he said it went VERY WELL! He said it was easy and not uncomfortable at all. He was told to bring swimming trunks...
  10. So very sorry you are having this continued stress! But...sooooo glad you have "samples" of those darn buggers to take for analysis. HA! You got them! Maybe now you can alter your diet to defeat them! You go girl! Hugs, hugs, etc.
  11. This is not true (according to NIH, Pharmacist's Letter, etc.) Be careful what you read in just one article. I don't want people to worry that all their generic meds contain gluten. Most do not. It is best to always call the manufacturer first though just to be certain. Better to trust the manufacturer than "one article".
  12. There are clindamycin oral caps without gluten. G & W Labs makes one (according to the NIH). Your pharmacist should be able to find and order what you need.
  13. I agree that it is SO discouraging constantly trying to find a "diet" that works for you. It's annoying to always feel peculiar and very much unlike anyone else. I feel like I'm continually reinventing the wheel! Ha! Strangely, after 6 years gluten-free, I am STARVING every 2 hours! (I get so sick and tired of cooking and eating.) Luckily,...
  14. I am so very sorry to learn of your new trouble. If memory serves me, I'm pretty sure you've already had more than your fair share of Celiac issues. I've not (yet) had kidney problems. However, recently, after reading on this site about problems with a high oxalate diet, I have cut out almond flour. This was difficult as all my baking involved almond...
  15. Bartfull, I agree with and fully endorse your choices in how you plan to navigate the end of your life. Smart woman. That said, I will really miss your words and energy on this site. Even though I've only been here for a short time, your news made me cry. I hope I have as much notice as you when my death comes. I want to avoid (as much as possible...
  16. Tigercat17, I recently spoke with Pfizer about their Levoxyl, because I used to take it and loved it. However, when I took it, Levoxyl was made in a small gluten free facility in st. Pete, FL. with no possibility of cross-contamination. Last week, Pfizer told me that Levoxyl now is made in a facility where "some" of their meds do contain wheat. (Levoxyl...
  17. Rockstar Kate, Thanks for posting your success story! It does my heart good to hear of your good efforts and good luck. I was also quite sick at your age; but missed getting diagnosed. I was completely focused on getting through a professional school at the time. No time to take care of my health. No insurance. No money. No support system....
  18. Ditto what Gemini said. I withdraw my previous suggestion about posting the food we do tolerate. Upon reflection, not such a hot idea for this forum.
  19. FINALLY! I've been scouring this site for 6 years; and I finally feel that I've found my Peeps! Most on this site say that if you are totally gluten free, and unless you have refractory Celiac, you will get well within weeks to maybe 2 years. Not so for us. I always felt they were implying that it was MY fault if I didn't get well. I don't think they...
  20. Hi Flowerqueen, My new GI doc only recently pronounced me to have CFS. It is the same fatigue I've had for 6 years, and which started AFTER going gluten free. My husband had been diagnosed years ago with fibromyalgia. This has disappeared since he went gluten free (so our household could be totally free from gluten). He's been pretty scared...
  21. Flowerqueen, Sadly, I am not symptom free. However, all my symptoms (of which there are many), are lessening. It has been a long, hard, frustrating, lonely road. Lots of research. (I'm totally sick of all the research.) I remind myself frequently that I am lucky to have access to the internet and all the information it affords me. You are the...
  22. I developed many food intolerances after being diagnosed with Celiac and going gluten free. Dairy, grains, nightshades, almond flour(oxalates), and possibly others I've yet to identify. None of these bothered me prior to diagnosis. I was diagnosed 6 years ago and only recently identified these. I tried eliminating these 4-5 years ago with no benefit....
  23. It would not be unreasonable to ask for a mild sedative to be taken prior to even leaving your house. You could swallow a small tablet with a tiny bit of water. Perhaps this would lessen your anxiety prior to getting the IV meds. Might be worth a try. You could even try a dose the evening before also. DON'T LOOK AT THE NEEDLE!
  24. I have had countless and varied rashes come and go since being diagnosed with Celiac. Dermatologists have not been helpful for me. Still, your best bet is to at least see a dermatologist and find out about yours. Maybe they can help you! Good luck!
