  1. I just recommend vegetable based plant protein over the others, that's my recommendation. It's a good source of protein for those who want to limit their consumption of meat. And I also would suggest if there is a choice of several, to pick the one with the lowest sugar.
  2. I'd recommend NOT getting WHEY protein (from milk, hard to digest for those with celiac's) or SOY protein (soy can reduce thyroid function, which a lot of Celiacs have a problem with). I use a VEGETABLE Protein powder that I put into Coconut Yogurt mixed with nuts and seeds and a few berries for lunch...it's very filling. Also do you have KIND bars there...
  3. When I've gotten accidentally glutened, I don't get the so-called common diarrhea, but I immediately gain 2-3 lbs and my abdomen pooches out and feels real firm. I also get some neurological symptoms (nerve pain rushing down leg when at rest), and depression. So everybody is different. But good you contacted your doctor and he/she is aware of what's going...
  4. Right, but if it's on your skin or your hair and you touch that and then touch something that goes into your mouth or put your hands in your mouth, then you can get glutened. That's why I used up my body lotion, but was really careful about washing hands if I touched my skin ... it was a pain to do and it's much nicer now that all my body products are free...
  5. Yes you need to read Newbie 101. Yes you need to be super vigilent. Yes even a spec the size of your smallest freckle can cause a problem for her. Even if it does not trigger noticeable symptoms, it does not mean it's not triggering an attack on her intestines!!! Yes, donate all non-stick and cast iron cookware and muffin pans and glazed on baking pans...
  6. Well, shoot, I wish I could eat the Bob's oats. I love oats and the gluten-free muesli. But the symptoms were pretty clear, and they completely stopped the day after the last time I ate them and have not returned. It must be the oats themselves that I cannot tolerate (oats have a protein in them similar to wheat rye barley, and cause problems for some but...
  7. Yes, right. But what I had been eating was Gluten Free Oats (meets FDA guidelines of less than 20 PPM, does NOT require testing to prove it...I read the actual guidelines and it is quite clear that testing is not required to make a gluten free claim). I had trouble with the Gluten Free Oats by Bob's Red Mill. I do not know if all oats will cause me a...
  8. Hi. If it's a packaged food product and it doesn't say CERTIFIED gluten-free (or has the gluten-free in the circle)... well, I stay away from it. I was having some of my old symptoms, and I wasn't sure what it was. I was eating Costco Kirkland bagged nuts (not the ones in the plastic jar, the raw ones for baking). Costco does a good job of indicating...
  9. Funny you mention it, but I was having very very slight acid reflux recently, which had completely cleared up after going gluten free. I backed off the ashwagandha from 3 per day to 2 and it's all good again ... Perfect example of trying anything new ... go slow, start at lowest dose as possible, gradually try more to recommended dose, then back off if too...
  10. I have had similar experience...thyroid was a little low (TSH normal but T3 was a little low). I could not tolerate any prescription for it or iodine/iodide supplementation, broke out in hives. On my own, I found that Ashwagandha worked wonders to even me out. Stabilized blood pressure, and ups and downs throughout the day. Worth a try, it's relatively...
  11. That's very helpful information, Kareng. I'll definately check for the gluten-free labeling next time I'm at the store!
  12. It's good to hear some who are very sensitive can eat them, but I'd have a panic attack at the thought of putting those in my mouth just because there are no direct gluten ingredients. If they are not marked "gluten free" then that means the company is not testing it. There is the possibility of cross contamination from one of their suppliers even if they...
  13. I read an excellent article not too long ago about choosing a probiotic...I am frantically looking for the saved link but cannot find it. But basically, you want one that is in the BILLIONS, and as many different varieties in it as possible. I have used Klaire Labs, which has been recommended by two naturopaths, and a few other brands.
  14. CYCLING LADY: Ha, I always enjoy reading your responses, so much good info! I also have thalassemia (beta type, Portuguese heritage). Perhaps you could start a separate thread on just that topic ... it has complicated my diagnosis and ongoing working on vitamin deficiencies and such. Thanks for all your input!
  15. Oh and you mention RESTLESS LEGS ... I had that, weird feeling of movement or muscles firing when not moving them, and irresistible urge to move my leg, usually in left leg but sometimes in right leg. It would set in usually in the evening and could keep me from falling asleep for awhile. It's completely gone now after I was off gluten for maybe only 2...
  16. I have an official diagnosis on paper and it was NOT done with endoscopy. My doc says they are no longer considered reliable for celiac diagnosis because the damage can be missed...a negative is not conclusive...if damage is found, that would of course be conclusive, but if damage is not found, it is not. My diagnosis was based on blood tests that showed...
  17. Thanks for that info. However, the gal in the dispensary at my naturopath warned me about this and pointed to the warning on the box of the tea I had been buying to ease sore throats. I threw out all I had at home. I don't remember the brand, but I will check next time I am there. Thanks again.
  18. Hello, AnxietyQueen. Do not despair. It takes awhile to heal, and it's an ongoing process of finding possible gluten contamination. I was diagnosed in June 2015, felt horrible for at least 2 months after stopping gluten, like I had the flu or a little constant hangover, then after that cleared up, still very very tired. Doc discovered I also had...
  19. H, all! I'm newly diagnosed since June of this year and I am so happy to see this discussion, always learning something new. Since I'm a newby to going gluten free, I also looked for "gluten free" on labels, but now I am learning that that is the company's claim, meeting FDA standards, which means testing less than 20 parts per million. I've read...
  20. Oh gosh, I am so sorry to hear that, how horrible! No, I was just trying to clarify how I was diagnosed, since it was not with the biopsy. So much to learn since I was diagnosed just this past June, and it can be so confusing. I don't I have food allergies that have been discovered (so far), but I have had anaphalactic reactions to things I have...
  21. Celiac's is an auto-immune disease that does cause the damage to the villi in the upper intestines, right, not just a food sensitivity. The results of this test panel were used as an indicator, according to the doc. It was the malnutrition/malabsorbtion signs in addition that he came up with the diagnosis. Anyway, just trying to help atheresa figure out...
  22. It was part of a 95 most common food allergens panel, which looks for antibodies to different foods. It showed me high in all dairy (which is common for Ceiac's because of the damaged intestines), and also in Barley, Gliaden, Gluten, Malt, and Wheat. Most everything else was fine. I got this through the Naturopathic doc...a traditional doc never in 20...
  23. You could do the DNA test without ingesting gluten and making yourself sick. The DNA test will show if you have the Celiac gene, the POSSIBILITY to develop this disease. If it comes back NEGATIVE, you could NOT possibly have Celiac's, so NCGS would probably be the cause of your symptoms when you were eating gluten. If it comes back POSITIVE, you may...
  24. Did you get tested for yeast overgrowth? I was diagnosed first with celiac's, saw a slight improvement with the gluten-free diet. However, with eliminating the gluten, I had added in a lot more fruits, which actually aggrevated some of my symptoms. Then the candida albacans results came in as high. Not until I cut out all sugars, including fruits and...
