Lots of smiles here too, Karen. That picture is priceless. -
ARCHIVED Ok, I'm Going To Have To Face It.
Guhlia replied to JerryK's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
If you feel as though you will need the positive diagnosis, you may want to consider going the routes of Enterolab instead of the unreliable doctor's blood tests. The results from Enterolab will not only come back positive if you have Celiac, but they will also come back positive if you are gluten intolerant. This may aid you in making your decision. -
Just be sure that the seafood, if boiled, is boiled in ONLY PURE WATER. I know some places that do crab, shrimp, etc. put beer into the water and that would contaminate the whole pot. Also, if they're grilling fish or something you may want to ask them to either do it in a clean pan OR clean a small section of the grill AND then do it on top of foil. Be sure...

Perhaps you would like the Lakefront Brewery's New Grist beer. It's gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Is This Okay To Eat?
Guhlia replied to spunky's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Just a note about my personal experience with veggies... I always buy a certain store brand which has an allergy CYA statement and I've never gotten sick, not even a little bit. Though, I think the allergy statement on my veggies states that they are made in the same facility. I haven't been able to find any frozen veggies that don't have an allergy statement... -
ARCHIVED Canola Oil... Used It For Frying
Guhlia posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Okay, we just made a delicious batch of gluten free donuts, but now we have a HUGE amount of canola oil left over after frying them. Can I use the oil again? Can I just let it cool and then put it back in the empty oil bottle to use for frying at a later date? Please help!!! -
I totally agree with the others. Eating and cooking gluten free can be so rewarding. I surprise myself all the time with new gluten free dishes that are WAY better than the things I would be cooking if I weren't gluten free. It's like a new adventure every day at dinner time. Until you start to feel a little bit better, you may want to stick to simple...

ARCHIVED Pasta?
Guhlia replied to hannahsue01's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Tinkyada is hands down the favorite in our household. There are other gluten free pastas that we can stomach, but Tinkyada is virtually "normal". -
ARCHIVED Amish School (if No Interest, Please Skip)
Guhlia replied to debmidge's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Hey, Patti, where exactly did it happen? I know it was really close to home here, but I can't find much info on where it was. You're talking about the shooting, right? Does anyone know if that guy went to Solanco High School? I wanna ask my sister in law if she went to school with him. She was about his age. -
ARCHIVED Real Corn Bread! And Noodle Kugel!
Guhlia replied to cycler's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You may want to try the Magic Bullet from homelandhousewares.com. I don't usually buy things off of infomercials, but this thing is absolutely wonderful! I use it almost every day. It's very multi-purpose. -
ARCHIVED Pills Coming Out Whole (sorry... Gross)....
Guhlia replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Before I went gluten free I would pass what looked like whole pills through. However, after some ummm... prodding... I realized that there was no medication left in the capsules, it was just the capsule that didn't digest. However, I suppose, if you have absorption problems, it would be possible to pass the pills right through your system. -
I have recently come down with a very persistent, dry cough. I went to the doctor last night and he told me that he thought I had whooping cough based on my description of the onset and my symptoms. I had a coughing fit while in the office, so he was able to listen to my lungs and everything and hear the cough. He prescribed me an antibiotic to reduce the...

ARCHIVED Jagermeister
Guhlia replied to Guhlia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Drinks, as in alcoholic beverages? Or drinks, as in soda/energy drinks/teas/etc? For either, I usually call the company. Although, lately I've been getting lazy and using the Clan Thompson list for beer, wine, and spirits. If you go to the company's website and look through their FAQ and can't find the info there, call the company. Most have 1-800 numbers... -
ARCHIVED Alcohol
Guhlia replied to yozy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I would highly recommend the Woodchuck Cider if you can get it in your area. Not only are all flavors gluten free, but they actually ADVERTISE them as gluten free. Way to go Woodchuck! -
ARCHIVED Greatest News Ever!
Guhlia replied to mommyetb's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Enterolab doesn't necessarily diagnose Celiac Disease. It diagnoses gluten intolerance (which can manifest itself as Celiac disease or as just an intolerance). It is entirely possible to test positive through Enterolab and not actually have Celiac Disease OR any of the Celiac Disease genes. Please, please look into this further before reintroducing gluten... -
ARCHIVED Chicken Nuggets
Guhlia replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
You could do any unsweetened gluten free cereal crushed seasoned with garlic, onion, paprika, and pepper. Dip into egg/milk mixture, then into the crushed cereal. Bake or fry. Parmesean cheese also works for breading if you mix it with some gluten free flour. I've used Cheetohs for breading. Doritos also work. -
That's funny... I used to do that when I was first diagnosed and first on the gluten free diet.... Now, I see glutenous food and it makes me flinch. I am so uncomfortable around people who are eating gluten for fear of getting contaminated. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but watching other people eat that stuff makes my stomach turn.

ARCHIVED Odd Question
Guhlia replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Fungal infections, lupus, diabetes, hormonal changes... All these things can cause hair loss as well as vitamin deficiencies. I would definitely bring it up with your doctor. -
Andrea, I got one issue of Gluten Free Living and was disgusted. I didn't like it at all. I felt as though it was entirely too opinionated. The recipes in the Fall 2006 Living Without magazine mostly seem to be soy free. There are a few in which I noticed soy as an ingredient, but certainly not most. Actually, as I read through them, they almost all are...

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm going to mention it to my mother who has been severely under the weather this past year without any answers. She's demanding some tests now and I'm going to mention this to her as something she should look into. Thanks.

My mom got me this magazine for my birthday and I just now got my first issue. WOW!!! I am super impressed. I expected the magazine to be much thicker than it is. They make up for the lack in bulk with their content though. The focus, at least in this issue, seems to really focus on gluten free/casein free diets. There are wonderful articles on living allergen...

ARCHIVED Chebe Pizza Crust Mix
Guhlia replied to ebrbetty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bette Hagman has an excellent recipe for pizza crust that is really easy to make and turns out absolutely delicious. It's the closest thing to "normal" pizza that we've tried. Even my husband enjoys this treat, my friends couldn't even tell the difference (and the one girl works at Pizza Hut). If you want the recipe, PM me. It's the Easy Pizza recipe in Bette...
