ARCHIVED gluten-free Df Sf Margarine Wanted
Mango04 replied to F.deSales's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I use coconut oil instead of butter in nearly everything I bake. It works well. Coconut oil with a hint of added salt works as a butter substitute on gluten-free toast and what not. Olive oil is a good alternative also. -
ARCHIVED Wits End With Belly Pain!
Mango04 replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
It's a good idea to take him off dairy, but one of the biggest mistakes people make is to go dairy-free for only a few days. He should really be off of dairy completely for (at least) a few weeks before reintroducing it. It takes a while for casein to leave a person's system, and a few days won't likely give you an answer. It sounds like a pain, I know... -
Beau Jo's has gluten-free pizza and I've heard good things about a gluten-free place called Deby's. I hate telling people to do searches, but there are so many threads on Denver...you might get some good ideas if you go to the travel forum and put "Denver" in as a key word (if you haven't already). Have a good trip.

ARCHIVED A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread
Mango04 replied to lonewolf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yeah, I don't buy the blood type thing either. Metabolic typing is actually a bit different than the blood type diet. Here's a link to the amazon page w/ more info about the book, or there are some shorter tests you can take online to get a better idea of what it's about. Something to try, anyway edit: oops..I forgot amazon links don't usually work... -
ARCHIVED A New Weight Loss Support/accountability Thread
Mango04 replied to lonewolf's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Do you know your metabolic type? Eating according to your metabolic type can help with cravings and keeping your blood sugar in check (and all sorts of different things). People are either protein types, carb types or mixed types. I took a pretty lenghty test to determine that I'm a mixed type, and eating that way really does help me. There's a book about... -
ARCHIVED Tide, Downt, Tone
Mango04 replied to gracey1037's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I think those things are gluten-free, but Tide is known to cause itchiness. Try to get a free and clear detergent, or an all natural one and see if that helps -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Family-friendly, Gluten-free Dinner Ideas?
Mango04 replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Make things that allow each person to build their own meal.... Rice bowls, tacos, tostadas, pizza..... For tostadas or tacos, I'll chop up veggies and open a can of beans, then we'll bread fish or chicken with potato starch or sweet rice flour and cook it on the stove. Heat up some Bearitos tostada shells in the oven. Then all the ingredients... -
ARCHIVED Daughter Wants gluten-free Birthday Party
Mango04 replied to lonewolf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
"Thank you for your very generous offer. I have the cakes taken care of, but would love for you to pick up *insert some sort of safe, pre-packaged gluten-free item*" LOL I dunno...why are some people so strange about food? -
ARCHIVED "flour" Tortillas...
Mango04 replied to sickchick's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I haven't made any tortillas myself, but I've seen recipes for gluten-free "flour" tortillas on recipezaar. Most use chickpea flour, I think. -
ARCHIVED Spices* On Rice Cakes Ok?
Mango04 replied to Kmbishop03's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A lot of the time the company website will tell you if that particular flavor is gluten-free. It probably is... -
ARCHIVED Organic Milk
Mango04 replied to Dandelion's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've actually heard organic milks usually have much longer shelf lives b/c they're so ultra pastuerized. I could be wrong about that though. -
ARCHIVED Help! Need Good Tasting gluten-free Food
Mango04 replied to jennandandy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Bob's Red Mill brownies Cause Your Special Mixes (all that I've tried are really good) Glutino Cinnamon Raisin Bread www.glutenchallenge.com has some good ideas for kids Kids seem to like Wellshire Farms chicken nuggets and Ian's frozen meals (the tv dinner-type ones with fish sticks, gluten-free brownies etc). gluten-free pancakes... -
ARCHIVED Mainstream gluten-free Lipsticks?
Mango04 replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Well, it depends, often times things with "wheat-free" labels are gluten-free, but simply need further investigation. In this case, the Neutrogena stuff on the "wheat-free (gluten-free)" list really is supposed to be gluten-free. Maybe they are misleading people by putting the words "gluten-free" in parenthesis, I don't know... Sometimes the wheat... -
OMG thanks for reminding me about this stuff. I used to get it from a little vegan shop near my house, but since I've moved from there I totally forgot about it. I must go get some!

ARCHIVED What Do Irish Celiacs Drink?
Mango04 replied to Pheline's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I've actually wondered this myself. There are a couple people from Ireland who post sometimes. Maybe they will let us know. -
ARCHIVED Tyson Chicken Breasts
Mango04 replied to scotty's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's because meat raised on a farm is really different than meat raised in CAFOs (I'm sure you know that, but I just felt like blatantly pointing it out ). The reason why you feel bad from Tyson and other store-bought meat probably has nothing to do with gluten. -
ARCHIVED Suggestions For Sleep Troubles
Mango04 replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Aromatherapy works for me. Pure lavendar oil is a good option. Make sure you're hydrated. Dehydration always gives me insomnia. Might relate to the summer heat in your case. Unplug most things in your room if possible. Electromagnetic fields can interfere with sleep. That's all I can think of, besides getting excercise and making sure... -
ARCHIVED Vinegar, Aromas, Citric Acid Gluten Free? Help!

Tom - are you sure this is the case in Spain? -
ARCHIVED B 6
Mango04 replied to Budew's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Nutritional yeast (slightly different than brewer's yeast) might be an option for you. Red Star is a popular brand. -
No, I order drinks in restaurants and I don't worry about cc on glasses.
-
Order a drink. Explain that you have severe "food allergies" and nothing on the menu is safe for you. Consider bringing along some gluten-free junk food to munch on while you're there - don't make it obvious to the restaurant staff that you have your own food. I know how you feel. I often am accusued of being anorexic - and I'm 30 pounds heavier than...

ARCHIVED Best Soy Milk?
Mango04 replied to Tritty's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
ditto I'm dairy-free, and would never just drink a glass of milk substitute. It's nice to have milk substitutes in cooking and baking, but they're not really needed as plain drinks. There might be a short adjustment period while your son gets all of the casein out of his system (right now he probably craves milk if he's allergic to it), but he will... -
ARCHIVED Shampoo Conditioner Hand Cream Etc......
Mango04 replied to JustJust's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I believe that in any one product, the source of the "fragrance" can change at any given time, and does change often. That's why nothing can be absolutely gauranteed. Even the company itself doesn't always know where the fragrance might have come from (or so I've been told). They generally just go with the cheapest option. For anyone interested in... -
ARCHIVED Deli Meat
Mango04 replied to andreagrant's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
You should see if there's a celiac associaion in Switzerland that can provide some information for you. Labeling laws and ingredients vary greatly from country to country, and an additive that's safe in one county, might not be in another. Be careful about using information that specifically applies to the US or to Canada. Hope you get your... -
ARCHIVED Rice Dream New Label "gluten Free"
Mango04 replied to gffamily's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ya know what's strange?...the fact that when something is labeled "vegan" and it's discovered that one ingredient in the product might have been derived from an animal source, mass apology letters are issued to the vegan community and the ingredients in the product are instantly changed. Open Original Shared Link It should be the same for food...
