Need help understanding bloodwork...
trents replied to Ljones's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Ljones! Yes, she is a weak positive in the celiac antibody blood work. Her iron deficiency could be explained by celiac disease or by the fact that she is a vegetarian since it is unlikely she would be getting sufficient B12 without animal sources in her diet (or B12 supplementation) and because plant-based iron is not nearly as... -
Diagnosis issues
trents replied to AmandaLynn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would like to add that there is a certain small percentage of celiacs whose manifestation of the disease is epidermal (DH) without flattening of the villi. -
Blood test help
trents replied to Youngmum85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Mucous in the stool, tooth enamel issues, and low iron are all classic symptoms of celiac disease. All of them suggest damage to the small bowel villous lining which, in turn, results in poor absorption of nutrients from the diet. And if I recall correctly, we have had forum participants list night sweats as one of their symptoms. I would push for further... -
Blood test help
trents replied to Youngmum85's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, Youngmum85! Too which IGA test do you refer? There is not just one. For instance, there is total IGA and there is tTG-IGA. Can you be more specific? And how old is your daughter? Antibody testing for children is often unreliable, especially with regard to the tTG-IGA and so other antibody tests should be run, a "full celiac panel... -
New job enrollment benefit, mark "disabled" if celiac?
trents replied to SS7's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
If I recall correctly, the context of the thread I referred to was awarding food prizes at a public school. And the gist of the law was that entities had to provide safe food alternatives for celiacs. -
Help with diagnosis
trents replied to laura622's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, laura622! The tTG-IGA is the most common antibody test that doctors order when checking for celiac disease. It combines good specificity with good sensitivity, at least for those from white European descent. It is much less reliable when used on those of black African descent. But even for whites, it misses 20% of those who are... -
New job enrollment benefit, mark "disabled" if celiac?
trents replied to SS7's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
We recently had a thread where somebody informed us that having celaic disease is one of the medical conditions that qualify for benefits under the American Disabilities Act or some such government program. I wish I could lay my hands on it but I don't remember what the thread topic was. -
Is Ka'Chava Gluten-Free?
trents commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
"Made in a factory that also produces products containing wheat . . . " is typically a cover their backside statement and is generally only a concern, if for anyone, for the most sensitive celiacs among us.- 22 comments

Sounds like a good plan to me. Cortisone is practically a miracle drug when not overused. It's important to get that liver inflammation under control. The liver has remarkable recuperative ability but not without limits. Has he been checked for fatty liver disease?

No, I did not take steriods. Just eating gluten-free was enough to bring the enzyme levels down to normal. Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease?

DH has a characteristic appearance with little blisters or pustules tin the center of the bumps according to my understanding. It is also important to get a skin biopsy done when you are having a fresh outbreak and the biopsy should be taken from between the bumps not on the bumps. That's what I have discerned from this forum. I do not suffer DH myself.

Elevated liver enzymes is one of the established symptoms of celiac disease. In fact, this is what led to my diagnosis of celiac disease about 20 years ago. They were just moderately high in my case and returned to normal levels within a few months of going gluten free.

Have you been officially diagnosed with DH or if not, are you trying to figure out if your symptoms indicate DH?

Welcome to the forum, AnnieBirdie! Not sure if you stated this inadvertently or if it was a real misconception, but a colonoscopy cannot be used to inspect the small bowel. A scope cannot go up that far from the bottom end. An endoscopy is used for examining the small bowel and for taking biopsies of the small bowel lining which would be necessary to...

Busy Mom of 3 - Tired of This Disease
trents replied to Rachel Docksteader's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I largely agree with what Hypo said and would like to emphasize that eating gluten-free need not be expensive if you focus on eating fresh foods like meat, veggies and fruit. It's the processed, ready made gluten-free stuff that is costly. Actually, converting to a gluten-free household can be healthier in that sense for everyone because it eliminates a... -
If it would have been answered you would see it here as a post.

Welcome to the forum, SaintFlyer! My feeling is the fullness symptom you describe after eating is something that is outside of celiac disease but something outside of it in the sense of possibly being indirectly connected to celiac disease. If I were you I'd be investigating the possibility of an H. Pylori infection or a peptic ulcer. I would also look...

Welcome to the forum, Leslie! Theoretically at least, distilling should remove all nonvolatile substances so distilled vinegar will actually be gluten free. But not all vinegar is distilled and some of the ones that are not distilled and are made from grains (like malt vinegar) would be a problem for celiacs. Having said that, I am also aware that there...

trents replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No one is saying that all people have the same amount of inflammation. What we are saying is that any inflammation is unacceptable and could result in serious health problems over time. "Silent" celiacs are those who usually are not experiencing great damage to their small bowel villi yet, in other words they are earlier in the damage curve. They often cease... -

trents replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Would you really be willing to allow a small, sub-clinical (asymptomatic) amount of inflammation to be going on in your gut just so you could be less vigilant and indulge yourself now and then? Yes, it is true that once you withdraw gluten from the diet you become more sensitive to it over time but is the alternative acceptable? Do you want to continue to... -

trents replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
For reasons I've already explained, that really isn't possible. Too much variation in individual sensitivity. It's something you have to feel your way through and discover from experience. Getting follow-up antibody testing is also helpful for those who aren't particularly sensitive such that lack of symptoms may not be a reliable indicator of inflammation... -
Strange Problematic Foods for a Celiac
trents replied to KatrinaB's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It is very common, even typical, for celiacs to develop intolerance to a number of non gluten foods. It has to do with the leaky gut syndrome that comes along with celaic disease. Also, as others have mentioned, you should look into histamine intolerance and MCAS (Mast Cell Activation Syndrome). -

Yes, it sounds like you may need to declare your house a gluten free zone. Let the other nonceliac members of the family get their gluten elsewhere. -

trents replied to LP023's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Different celiacs have different sensitivity levels to minor amounts of gluten exposure. What is enough to trigger a reaction in one celiac will not trigger one in another. The FDA has established the guideline of 20ppm for food companies to be able to market their products as gluten free. Their research concluded that this was a safe concentration for the...
