  1. Could it have been a reaction to the metal prongs of your bra? Those usually give me a rash. I was told that shingles have nothing to do with herpes simplex--the chickenpox virus is herpes zoster )also known as varicella), which is a totally different virus. When I was diagnosed, my first reaction was, "Shingles? What's that? It sounds like I...
  2. I think it is better to yell at G-d than to close our minds to His existence. At least, if we are yelling at Him, we are acknowledging His presence... Children are allowed to be angry with their parents (although it doesn't mean they can actually do anything about it--to acknowledge how we feel is the first step to actually doing something about it....
  3. This makes me feel quite defensive, as I did NOT know that aspartame is a neurotoxin, and, as I said, I have been following it closely in the media for DECADES.
  4. Could it be "post-herpetic neuralgia?" I have had this. What happens is, the nerve that was inflamed from the shingles has some kind of damage that results in pain along the path of the nerve. It can take a year or more to resolve. In my case it wasn't a constant pain, it was very sporadic, and felt exactly like someone was holding a flame to my skin...
  5. Thanks, Patti! I sent my request in. This is the second time I've written (I tried last summer, too), but maybe it'll catch her attention if a whole bunch of us keep peppering her with emails!
  6. I'm sorry, Jestgar, but I really feel like you are slamming everybody who doesn't know what you know. I, too, pay attention--especially to news about aspartame. You see, the father of my best friend in high school was one of the Searle company's chemical engineers who helped develop Aspartame, and he never let his family touch it. She told me that he...
  7. GREAT IDEA!!!! I'm rushing out the door right now--can someone please post a link to tempt those who are either lazy, rushed, not good with Oprah's sites, etc? That way, we might get more of us getting the message across to Oprah!
  8. I think for many bipolar people, caffeine/coffee may be just as strong a factor as gluten. There are even some studies on this, but since we never hear about them, I guess the coffee industry has as much political clout as the wheat and pharmaceutical industries... When you think about it, caffeine (in the form of coffee and sodas) is a legal DRUG. It...
  9. Plain canned tomato sauce works pretty well, too--it seems milder and not as acidic as pasta sauce (like there's a difference between "pasta sauce" and "tomato sauce?"). It's also MUCH cheaper than Amy's. And I usually do add a bit of cream, too, but I bet a little cornstarch or rice flour would work...
  10. I find that aspartame has a very unpleasant aftertaste, so I don't buy anything that contains it, nor do I let my children eat anything with it, but I have never bothered to research it, nor have I heard or read that it is a neurotoxin. (I'm not saying it's not, just that I never looked for info, and have never seen anything in the media discussing it as...
  11. Is it possible that you were reacting to something you ate earlier in the day? Maybe you're pinpointing the wrong meal...
  12. My dad's just been diagnosed with prostate cancer AND diabetes. I did a search, and couldn't find ANYTHING connecting celiac and prostate cancer. Do you have any links?
  13. It's not necessarily from a commercial. My kindergartener came home from school yesterday with a pile of papers about the food pyramid, and how many servings of grain and dairy she NEEDS (sic) to eat every day. So, HawkFire, what would be better choices for calcium?
  14. Wow, you guys have so much valuable information! I was thinking that maybe Scott might want to have an "MS" section, either on cleiac.com or here on glutenfreeforum since the link with gluten is so strong...has anyone asked him about this?
  15. Oh, wow, that looks AMAZING (drool drool)!!!!
  16. I always make my own--homemade frosting tastes SO much better than storebought, storebought has a slight rancid shortening aftertaste to it. It's so easy, too--butter, powdered sugar, a little milk or cream, and whatever flavor you like (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, etc.) If you want chocolate, first add cocoa powder to the powdered sugar. You can...
  17. Karen, I am not a PhD or even a chemist, but the first thing that comes to my mind is that you might have some kind of mold/candida issue, and that that is what is making you crave damp basements. I don't see it as craving something you need, but rather something you shouldn't have, much the way we all used to crave bread and pasta because of our gluten...
  18. And let's not forget that the rate of celiac in Asians is nearly nonexistent--until they come to the West and start eating a Western diet high in gluten. The rate of celiac among Asian-Americans is higher with every generation. Hmmmm, hmmmm, hmmmmm......
  19. You can email her the recipe, though!
  20. H-ll's Bells, that's a no-brainer: they should only be allowed to live in your house if they are gluten-free! It is YOUR house--you and your wife get to set the rules.
  21. I always had diarrhea with my period --until I stopped eating gluten. Same with my PCOS. I agree with Carla, though--there is always a specific cause. In your case, I wonder if it is thyroid? Thyroid IS a hormone, and regulates metabolism, which affects all your other hormones. Remember Georgie? I think what she was describing may have fit you....
  22. When you think about it, that's not so far off from reality, as celiac is often pre-non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma!
  23. I'm tellin' ya, Jerry, once you learn how to bake gluten-free versions of your favorites, you will stop craving them. The first time you eat a gluten-free cake, cookie, or piece of really good bread (i.e., not those frozen slabs of styrofoam), it calms the craving--and the craving does not come back. The craving will only come back if you feed it (as in...

    ARCHIVED Ibs

Oh, my. I'm sending prayers for him--can't think of anything else helpful right now!

    ARCHIVED Ibs

Some questions off the top of my head (you may already have answered these): Is he getting plenty of fiber in the form of fresh fruits and vegies? Is he eating any porbiotics (yogurt? kefir?) Is he dairy-intolerant? Sorry if you have already answered these!
