ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Or Cystic Fibrosis?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to ptkds's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Sorry if I am suggesting something you already looked into, but did you try taking her off dairy? I only ask because a friend's daughter had colds and ear infections as a reaction to dairy, but never any other kinds of reactions, so she was on intermittent antibiotics for a long time until the ped suggested long-term (like for a year or more) low-dose antibiotics... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Seen Dannon Commercial?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Mtndog's topic in Publications & Publicity
It was in Dangerous Grains, but it didn't name a study. However, I found this just now: Open Original Shared Link, which lists several studies, with varying rates (but all extremely high) of celiacs who were formula-fed. It also mentions a study of the timing of gluten introduction while still being breastfed as opposed to having been weaned. Very interesting... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Seen Dannon Commercial?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Mtndog's topic in Publications & Publicity
Ah, now it's starting to make sense. Human milk, unlike formula--ANY formula--contains secretory IgA. I read that 84% of diagnosed celiacs were either not breastfed at all or breastfed for only 2 months or less. The rate was similar to people diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. And women still think that giving a baby formula is an adequate choice... -
ARCHIVED Calling For A Prayer For My Sister!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to blueeyedmanda's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Am sending good thoughts and prayers. A quick word of advice--ask the admitting physician or whoever is the physician to waive the policy that doesn't allow people to stay overnight in her room, and cite the fact that the IV he ordered at noon wasn't put in until 8. Your sister needs an advocate to be with her 24 hours a day. In some ways, small hospitals... -
ARCHIVED For Those With Gluten-free Lists...
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Welcome, Rosy! At the top right of each thread's first page are two "buttons." One says, "add reply," and the other says, "new topic." Hope that helps! -
ARCHIVED Omg...i Might Be On To Something
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Rachel--24's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Hugs to everyone who needs them, especially Miamia and NoGLuGirl. NogluGirl, I agree with Rachel about pushing the problems with your parents to the side as probably being the best course of action. However, as a second choice, might it help to seek some kind of family counseling? Personally, I think they need it, not you, but maybe if they went with... -

Oh, no! Does this mean Rolos in the US are gluteny also???? -
ARCHIVED Dairy Free Icecream !
Fiddle-Faddle replied to georgie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Sounds yummy! You can also address the granular issue by first dissolving the sugar in a little of the coconut cream (or even a little water) over low heat. Hmmm--just saw the egg in the ingredients. Raw egg might not be a good idea if you already have food intolerances. It still sounds yummy, though! -
ARCHIVED Could This Be Celiac?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I lost a dear frined to multiple myeloma, which caused multiple bone breaks. She was 82, so for several years, they just assumed that it was osteoporosis. It wasn't. Here is a link: Open Original Shared Link. Obviously, I hope it's celiac instead. -

Brian, the pain you describe is how my father described his kidney problems....I think you need to get it checked out NOW. -
ARCHIVED 10 Mos. Old-possibly Celciac?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to nikki8's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Whoops, sorry about that! Thanks for clarifying that. I thought wagon wheels were pasta. What are they? -
ARCHIVED 10 Mos. Old-possibly Celciac?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to nikki8's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What kind of formula are you giving him? I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I suspect more of a casein problem than a gluten one. The reason I say this is the timing that you described--the changes in his health coincided with your supplementing with formula. When you say he was losing weight--was he losing in terms of actual pounds and... -
ARCHIVED Don't Know What's Wrong
Fiddle-Faddle replied to GlutenWrangler's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
It's certainly ;ossible that you might have developed an intolerance to eggs. You don't need a nutritionist to tell you that (though you might get some good insights from a nutritionist); just skip the eggs for a day or two and see if things are better. And although I dearly love bacon, I've gotta say--with the problems you've been describing, it's not... -

Fiddle-Faddle replied to GlutenWrangler's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Oh--just because it has been your diet for a long time with no problems doesn't mean that it will NEVER cause problems. Look how many if us did just fine eating gluten our whole lives (until recently)! -

I'm still curious about the dehydration thing. Is it because everything goes through you and you get diarrhea? Or are you vomiting? Otherwise, what makes you think you are dehydrated? (I'm not challenging you here, you know your own body, I'm just trying to understand how you got to that conclusion.) Have you been checked for diabetes? gfp is right... -
ARCHIVED Why Did I Pay For A Gene Test?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Interesting point. Even more interesting is the fact that gluten sensitivity seems to be unheard of in Asia--but it occurs with increasing frequency in 2nd and 3rd generation Asian-Americans, as their diet becomes more and more Westernized (i.e., gluten-filled). -

Other sources of mold might include a leaky dishwasher (water dripping just a bit under the dishwasher, where it wouldn't be able to evaporate) and under and even inside a washing machine. -

one more thought--Pedialyte is not meant to be drunk by the gallon! That's an awful lot of sugar, salt, and electrolytes--that's going to upset the balance, as well, rather than restore it.. In fact, our pediatrican always told us that it has way too MUCH sugar and salt even for the way it is supposed to be taken, and told us to mix it with water before... -

Brian, a couple of things are jumping out at me. They might not be a problem, but I think you ought to look at them anyway. 1) Bacon--it's loaded with nitrites, preservatives, and some brands do have gluten (though I assume you've already checked the labels). Plus it may be contributing to to #2. 2) 3 GALLONS of water a day? That's not typical, andis... -
ARCHIVED 1 Week....still Waiting
Fiddle-Faddle replied to JerryK's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
My cravings disappeared after about 2 weeks. THose 2 weeks, all I wanted was a slice--no, a LOAF--of good French bread with butter. And real cookies. What I ended up doing was munching on Fritos (which I've never craved in my life before)--and they DID calm the cravings. I went through an amazing amount of Fritos in those 2 weeks--and I lost close... -
ARCHIVED Omg The Mess I Made!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
When I make gluten-free breads, the batter does NOT look anything remotely like wheat-based bread dough--but after baking, it does. I think it might turn out better if you don't add extra liquid to make the batter look "right." -
ARCHIVED Omg The Mess I Made!
Fiddle-Faddle replied to TinkerbellSwt's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Aww, what a frustrating day it must have been for you! There is a French term, "mise en place," that chefs use. It means to measure out EVERYTHING and put them in place before you start adding things and mixing them together. That way, you're less likely to forget the cornstarch (and maybe one of the liquids, from the sound of your dough). After... -
ARCHIVED The Common Cold Prior To Diagnosis
Fiddle-Faddle replied to amarieski's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wonder if what you are describing might be due to classic American "comfort foods" that we tend to eat when sick: noodles, pasta, toast, crackers, etc. Even our chicken soups tend to have noodles, matzah balls, dumplings, etc. Before I was diagnosed, I spent every day of 3 pregnancies vomiting, because I did what the doctor said and tried to munch on...
