  1. Nah, you're not alone--kbabe, you , me, and my three gluten-eating kids all enjoy them! But maybe we're all weird or something. Let me know how you like the buckwheat ones, okay?
  2. It could be a caffeine issue, too. Caffeine is well-known for causing the runs!
  3. I have them and am fine as long as I eat only one (drowned in butter and syrup). My gluten-eating kids DO have tummyaches if they eat more than one (as do I). I think that for us, the problem is that the flours in the gluten-free substitutes are so very heavy. I can't eat a whole lot without feeling like I've swallowed a brick--but I can put away huge...
  4. I remember reading that among Asians in Asia, celiac disease is virtually unheard of, but among Asians living in America, the rate of celiac disease incidence increases with each generation (as their diet becomes more and more Westernized). I am sorry that I can't remember where I read that, so I cannot present this as peer-reviewed science! But to connect...
  5. Hmmmm. Scott, I do see your point. Perhaps the above-mentioned editing of hundreds of pages to several documents sorted by subject (Bioset, mercury, Lyme, etc.) might partially address this. The problem is that these issues, at least for some here, are so intertwined, that they are NOT really separate issues. I, for one, HAVE been trying to keep up...
  6. Great haircut! And what cute cousins (and kittycat) you have!
  7. I think this should be the "Brilliant-Research-Done-by-the-People-Who-Are-Actually-Living-With-the-Problems" thread.
  8. Hi, Lymetoo, nice to see you! I don't know if I should count as a Lyme Lady or not--I did have a suspicious insect bite about 20 years ago in Massachusetts (after growing up in Illinois and spending summers at camps in Wisconsin and Minnesota),. The bite got infected (cellulitis), and I was immediately treated with IV antibiotics and a couple of weeks...
  9. Why the weird look, I wonder?
  10. It's in almost every wristwatch on the market, too. Even plastic watches have metal buckles or metal backs.
  11. Agreed--we all have different priorities! Right now, maybe I'm selfish, but I really couldn't care less about giving exposure to gluten-free products by "mainstreaming" them in the regular aisles--that makes it far more time-consuming for me, and as far as I can tell, nobody else pays attention to them anyway. My gluten-eating friends who have tried...
  12. Very interesting! I can't help being curious: how did they induce IBD in mice? Maybe by feeding them, um, gluten?
  13. Wow. I especially like the part where he says, "but there are also some highly intelligent people who approach the problem thoughtfully and rationally. They cannot be dismissed." He must have heard about our Lyme Ladies!
  14. It's because the instruments are pitched differently; they try to write each part in whatever clef gives them the fewest notes above or below the staff. If you write a trombone part in treble clef, they would have to read 10 ledger lines below the staff. I'm not sure asking the eigth graders to help out is a good idea. Our local high school,...
  15. Woman of many talents! Bravo! How many children will you be teaching, how often does band meet, and do you teach them small group lessons on their instruments as well, or just the whole band together? You might see if a music major or two at the local university can come help out occasionally. There are some pretty decent and easy band arrangements...
  16. Just to warn you, if you leave an empty container in the fridge, it will absorb the combined odors of everything else in the fridge (yuck)...
  17. None of my kids had gluten until they were 12 months old. I didn't realize gluten might be a problem at that point; I was avoiding potential allergens because my husband had a lot of food allergies (although none of them were wheat). My second child had nothing but breastmilk for 10 months; he had had a severe rash reaction to vaccines, and the doctor...
  18. Rachel,. as usual, your theories make far more sense than anything the medical community is trying to sell! Do you have my chicken soup recipes? Crockpot/rotisserie chicken bones plus vegies and the other is egg drop soup made with that chicken stock that comes in cardboard boxes--can you have any of that?
  19. Clarification: I'm not looking for "normal" gluten-free things to be put in a special aisle. But it would be nice if the gluten-free cereals, cookies, sauces, pastas, etc, were all in an aisle together.
  20. Our Whole Foods only has a section for all the Bob's Red Mill flours, and the gluten-free ones are all mixed up with the vital wheat gluten, spelt flour, and so forth. Gluten-free cereals are mixed in with all the other cereals in the cereal aisle; same thing with cookies and sauces. It takes forever to find anything, and the aisles are narrow and crowded...
  21. I just did a quickie search on xanthan gum, and the only definition that actually listed what xanthan from is made from specifies corn: xanthan gum [ZAN-thuhn] Produced from the fermentation of corn sugar, xanthan gum is used as a thickener, emulsifier and stabilizer in foods such as dairy products and salad dressings. See also guar gum; gum arabic; gum...
  22. I just don't understand why they don't have a gluten-free aisle, where we wouldn't have to read the label on every bottle of soy sauce and every box of cereal. Would that be so hard for them????? Or am I asking too much?
  23. I second everyone's great advice! I can't help wondering about the mac'n'cheese. I wonder how she made the cheese sauce? You might tell her that it was wonderful and could she give you the recipe so you could make it yourself? If she used flour instead of cornstarch to make the cheese sauce, that might be your answer right there. Of course, maybe I...
  24. Rachel: after reading post #11931, I have a strong urge to make you chicken soup...
  25. If the microwave was that filthy, it might not have been gluten--it very well could be food poisoning. If somebody heated, say, a bowl of meaty chili, and it splattered, and they never cleaned it up, then you ended up with their chili meat juices, which without a doubt were growing lovely bacteria. I share a microwave at work with 92 people, and I swear...
