ARCHIVED Celiac Caused By Virus?
NorthernElf replied to CK1901's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had a bit of a finicky tummy all my life, but it was a virus about 12 years ago that took me down for over a week - couldn't keep a thing in - that made it impossible for me to handle any gluten at all. I lost 5 pounds I didn't have to lose & needed IV fluids and a shot to stop my stomach from spasming at the end of that week. It was horrible. It took... -
ARCHIVED Amazon <dot> Ca
NorthernElf replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm guessing most of you are in the US....it's new in Canada. I actually have ordered through US to a US address before with great success. Saw it on the news that it had come to Canada and got so excited - finally can order online (never had groceries at Amazon here period, let alone gluten-free stuff). The news clip did say it was crazy expensive..... -
ARCHIVED Amazon <dot> Ca
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh my goodness !!! So we finally got gluten-free food through our amazon...instead of just books. So....I put stuff in my cart - was going to buy $133 worth of gluten-free stuff...............................would you believe shipping was $80 (a few cents less)............REALLY? See here's the thing....I was ordering chips, crackers, a chocolate treat... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think We Get Glutened On The Shared Equipment?
NorthernElf replied to mommyto2kids's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't anymore...really hate getting sick ! Maybe I'm just sensitive but it's so not worth it. -

ARCHIVED Hemorrhoids - When To Worry?
NorthernElf replied to nvsmom's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I agree it's probably a fissure. My whole journey here started with an extreme virus that 'purged' my body for a week, couldn't keep anything in and it was downhill from there. Anyway, that lead to hemorrhoid surgery as one prolapsed (don't EVER want to go through that again - prolapse was painful). Since then (10+ years or so) I have a fissure that acts... -
ARCHIVED Doctor Is Suggesting Lupus ?
NorthernElf replied to jhol's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Keep plugging along....guess it's really all one can do !!! I am on my way to a rare blood disorder clinic next month because my IgG levels are low (immunodeficiency). Right now that's all we got to go on. I have been gluten free for 11 years and have had severe, symmetrical joint pain and fatigue issues for almost 3. I have seen 2 rheumatologists and a... -
I work at a pool and love the hot tub. ;-) The chemicals in the pools breakdown things like lotion, sweat, etc. Hot tubs tend to have the highest concentration, mostly because bacteria loves heat and people sweat in the hot tub. It is usually recommended that you never put your head underwater in a hot tub. Our pools do have some chlorine but they...

ARCHIVED Doctor Is Suggesting Lupus ?
NorthernElf replied to jhol's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Right now Lupus in on m list of things getting checked out. There are several problems with getting Lupus figured out - it may take awhile for the bloodwork to catch up with the symptoms (ie. you can have symptoms but clear bloodwork). It is the "disease of a thousand faces" - it is quite variable in its presentation. You never said what your symtpoms... -
ARCHIVED Calling All Canadians

I am admittedly not a big coconut fan but I didn't like them. They are basically coconut mixed with icinjg sugar (first two ingredients). I did bring them home and I think I will crumble them and spread them over a cake or something. Way too sweet for me. I hope they try something else - how about a ginger snap or sugar cookie ? Coconut seems a weird... -
I agree ! I had IBS for years (couple of decades) before getting sick with a bad virus that wouldn't let me keep anything in for a week. After that I could not tolerate gluten at all (took a while to figure out). Anyway, 5 months after being gluten-free my doc tested me for celiac and of course it was negative....but I am very sensitive to gluten. I have...

ARCHIVED Fasting After A Glutening? Pros And Cons?
NorthernElf replied to anti-soprano's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree with a light diet and lots of fluids. After a glutening it seems as if everything I eat has gluten...! It's really just that my GI tract is a mess. I will definitely eat less, smaller volume, and the most gentle food I can (unprocessed, non acidic, not spicy, no dairy). I try not to take anything but tylenol but if I have to work I will take pepto... -
ARCHIVED Does Gerd Get Any Better?
NorthernElf replied to sabin112's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Definitely but you may still have to manage it a little. Don't eat too much at one time, watch the fatty food and the spicey food....or too much acidic food (coffee, etc.). These days for me too much coffee on an empty stomach or a bad mixture like wine & nachos will give me reflux ! Dairy can get me too, everyone is different. Adding intense exercise...- 15 replies

ARCHIVED Peanut Butter
NorthernElf replied to jen9882's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have my own jar of peanut butter, well labelled & I can still react to pb. It's not a gluten reaction, it's a peanut butter reaction ! I can eat it occassionally but if I eat it 2-3 days in a row I get bloating & cramping. What can you do ! -

I'm in Canada - I use Heinz worchestershire safely. -
CVID I have been trying to figure out for 2 years why I hurt, why I am so tired - lots of ups & downs. Sometimes I'm fine, sometimes joints hurt a little (mostly wrists/hands/elbows...then also knees/ankles/feet), sometimes I am in agony. I have seen two different rheumatologists, had an MS scare, had a ton of blood work & astounded my doctor...

I'm going to start a new thread on this but have you had your immunoglobulins checked ? I am partway through getting diagnosed with IgG deficiency - possibly something called CVID (common variable immune disorder)....other Ig possibly low as well (just did more bloodwork). What it means is bascially low immumity and I have lots of joint pain. It may not...

ARCHIVED Anyone Get Gluten Type Reactions From Coffee?
NorthernElf replied to gluten-is-kryptonite's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love my coffee and could never stop it (well, I wouldn't want to). However - if I have coffee on an empty stomach sometimes it can result in some gastric issues. My hubby (non celiac) is the same....esp. first thing in the morning. Also - if I have been glutened coffee is more effective on me in that way. Like a lot of things (eg. dairy) - if I am already... -
I hear you and I understand !!! It bugs me too when it is a 'weight loss' diet - in some folks' minds that loses us credibility. We are so not eating gluten-free because we are trying to lose/not gain weight. Ha - in fact, due to, uh, digestive issues I'm guessing many of us would LOSE weight if we actually ate gluten. I like that the gluten-free 'fad...

ARCHIVED I Just Told Off Michael Pollan On Behalf Of The Celiac Community...
NorthernElf replied to ButterflyChaser's topic in Publications & Publicity
I thought it was a pretty good article too. If one was to 'go on the gluten free bandwagon' and eat/buy the expensive gluten-free options (chips, some breads, waffles, cookies)....it is not a healthier diet. Some of the gluten-free options out there are simple carbs without much nutrition...and are very calorie dense compared to their gluten equivalents.... -
ARCHIVED Bad Reaction To Gluten Free Food @ Wendy's
NorthernElf replied to sharese28's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Wendy's is my go to place to eat when travelling - chili or chili & potato. I have only gotten 'stung' once. Maybe they have changed their practices ? Dunno...but I am vey careful, pretty much gave up on eating out period, I am usually pretty sensitive. I carry food with me wherever I go - Wendy's is nice when I want to have something actually hot ! -
ARCHIVED Probiotics
NorthernElf replied to Luv2teach's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I take Kirkland at the moment - but usually buy whatever is cheapest ! Of course, I make sure it is gluten free and has a mix of bacteria. -
If I could 'weigh' in here - try to hit some weights a couple times a week. Working/building muscle helps keep the metabolism going strong. More muscle means a higher basal metabolism. After lifting some weights you get a bit of an afterburn effect - metabolism stays up for a few hours afterwards. Weight training also helps ensure that more of your weight...

ARCHIVED Endurance Issues And Exercise Intolerance
NorthernElf replied to Jen-1984's topic in Sports and Fitness
I have my ups & downs.....and wow, I too have had RA, Lupus, etc. tests. Last April I had an MRI and the rheumy told me it looked like MS (!). I saw a neurologist and he pretty much ruled that out. I have since seen that Celiac can cause simliar brain changes. My symptoms were lots of joint pain - whole body but particularly the hands/wrists/elbows.....
