ARCHIVED Gluten Headaches
NorthernElf replied to Strawberry-Jam's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Wow OP...I coulda written your post. I used to get extreme headaches - tylenol was useless & ibuprofen would just take the edge off, maybe get rid of them for an hour. Over the years I have had my eyes examined repeatedly, including by an eye doc. I have had sinus xrays & a ct scan. When all that is negative it is frustrating ! Since cutting gluten... -
ARCHIVED Jello Pudding Cups
NorthernElf replied to GFreeMO's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I see no one has replied - I think they are gluten-free though. From the website (Kraft foods)... The ingredient information on labels of Kraft products is very specific to help you make accurate and informed choices. If a Kraft product has an ingredient that is a source of gluten, the specific grain will be listed in the ingredient statement, no matter... -
ARCHIVED Anyone Use A Rice Cooker To Steam Other Stuff?
NorthernElf replied to superfob's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As far as plates & pots go - I use only one set in my mixed household BUT I have a dishwasher. We were at a hotel with a kitchenette for a tournament this winter & I am sure I got glutened from the dishes/pots there because washing in a sink just doesn't do the same job....I would be interested to hear what others say on this one. FWIW, I brought... -

ARCHIVED Licorice
NorthernElf replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've ordered Candy Tree through (Company Name Removed - They Spammed This Forum and are Banned)....not quite the same as the old red licorice with wheat in it but a nice treat !!! -
ARCHIVED Was My Girlfriend Out Of Line?
NorthernElf replied to jasonD2's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This whole celiac can be a big pain in the butt...& not just for us. It can be hard to find a compromise. My brother took us out to a pizza place a year or so ago...I had a glass of wine (well, two) and then, by the end of it, an attitude ! It was either pizza or salad bar and there were many gluteny things in the salad bar and kids mixing it up so... -

ARCHIVED A Couple Of Days Of Disappointments
NorthernElf replied to Cheryl-C's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Bob's Mighty Tasty hot cereal too - just over a cup of boiling water, stir in 1/4 cup of the stuff & simmer for 5 minutes, stir in an egg until it's cooked & add dried cranberries & walnuts....mmmm..... -
ARCHIVED Coffee And Celiac
NorthernElf replied to Noche22's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I hang on to my coffee - I love my coffee - but yeah, it can be hard on your intestinal tract, esp. if you are already down & out ! As for migraines, not sure if I get those but gluten gives me incredible headaches that Tylenol won't touch. Advil takes the edge off but doesn't get totally rid of it either. They are brutal - but coffee doesn't give... -
LOL....well there's yoga....and then there's yoga ! Was thinking more stretch yoga (I have dvds) - not so much the power/ashtanga stuff...though I like that too.

I'm a fitness instructor & avid exerciser (runner, swimmer, lifter). Any advice I can give you is from my experience & may or may not help you ! Can't help you with the creatine - I'm not a supplement person (other than vitamins). I am a strong believer in eating clean - eating food that is pretty darn close to how it originated & a diet that...

ARCHIVED Dh Is Ill And His Family Is Blaming My Gluten-Free Diet
NorthernElf replied to msmini14's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I agree - definitely absurd...are they trying to say that gluten is necessary for a healthy life ? The human body needs gluten to function ? Gosh - they really are in denial about your diet. You might wanna get him checked out though - if he's had stomach issues for a few months it sounds like something is going on. Always good to follow it up... -
ARCHIVED Taking Food On A Plane
NorthernElf replied to diane64's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I too carry a lot of food...necessity ! I've been STARVING in airports waiting for flights...really sucks. Also - don't take those small cans of tuna - I've taken one through once and had one confiscated once. -
ARCHIVED Gnosis Chocolate
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Anyone ever try this ? It's gluten-free & dairy free (& soy free I think). Read about it in a magazine - they have a website. It's kind of expensive & one could order it online. Just curious... -
ARCHIVED How Can I Help My In-Laws Understand
NorthernElf replied to Gibbit-43's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Look after your own food. Don't suffer in silence - it won't help her get it. In fact, she'll think that either she is doing things right or the whole thing is in your head. It took awhile for me to get both sides of my family to get that I really can't eat gluten....and stay sane ! FWIW, they have all finally (mostly) got it but I still am looking... -
Tough. Get sick or piss people off....basically what it comes down to. Stick to your guns & bring your own stuff. Tell them it's a survival mechanism for you - would they purposely eat something that would make them feel like they have the flu ? Usually every Christmas we go to my folks and every spring break we go to DH's...I always get zinged...

ARCHIVED Working At A Pizza Place?
NorthernElf replied to stonezeppelinpilot's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm mom in a family of 5...the only gluten-free one. I have segregated all the gluten stuff on to an island in my kitchen. I rarely ever bake - leave that up to my kids now. I have made home made pizza crust and cookies & glutened myself - while trying not to so I just quit. It's not feasible to make my house gluten free at this point - expensive ! However... -
This is a tough one. My folks don't get it, I have 2 mother in laws & one tries really hard to work around it for me...& I have still gotten glutened. She's a dear but all her pans have gluten, etc. I agree with bringing your own stuff - real pain in the butt but at least you will be safe. It also means you get to do extra work. I always seem...

ARCHIVED Where To Buy gluten-free Soy Sauce? (Canada)
NorthernElf replied to Katie B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I use VH as well...out here in BC. I have tried Bragg's too but VH is easily at least half the price...never had a problem. -
ARCHIVED Stomach/intestinal Pain....where Is Yours ?
NorthernElf posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Just had a colonoscopy to figure some pain issues. Seems all is ok...been great for two weeks but now getting weird pains again. I'm thinking there is some cross contamination happening. I live in a household of 5...mom & the only celiac. So...trying to figure out if these pains are gluten related. I believe there is a difference between straight... -
I'm in Canada but I eat Wendy's chili fairly frequently - it's a great standby as we travel around with the kids for hockey. It's nice to have a go to meal/snack that I can trust - something hot. I pack food all the time but the chili is nice to sit down to - if I'm hungry I get the baked potato too. I believe I got glutened once by the chili - out of about...

ARCHIVED Jell-O
NorthernElf replied to ArubaWendy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat a lot of cool whip & jello products....esp. in the summer... Gluten is never the issue - for me it is the dairy...sometimes I can take it, sometimes I can't. -
ARCHIVED Healthy Fats And Shortage In Celiacs
NorthernElf replied to Bigbread's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I eat a lot more nuts than I used to - in my breakfast and sometimes in my gluten-free baking. I love walnuts. I also find myself cooking a bit with butter (small amount in stirfries...adds to the taste) and using regular salad dressings (as opposed to lite ones). Guess it's becoming all about the flavour. I was taking a flaxseed oil supplement but when I... -
ARCHIVED What Do I Call Myself?
NorthernElf replied to SheaLynne's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I call myself celiac - most people get it. Saying intolerance just doesn't seem to give it credibility - esp. since I know folks who say they are intolerant and still eat some gluten. I have zero tolerance to gluten, so I consider myself celiac. My history - negative blood test and gluten free by the time I had the endoscope (over 3 months) and GP told...
