  1. Just gotta get it out...I'm a pretty roll with the punches person but sometimes this just gets to me ! My folks are up for Thanksgiving...I'm 41 and I still have parent issues, LOL. I have my kitchen segregated for my gluten free life. I have an island on wheels where all the gluten stuff goes, food labelled in the fridge, pantry, and freezer that is mine...
  2. So I'm interested in hearing about anyone else's experience with gallbladder issues. For the last two week I have been having some pains in my right side and in the last week it has localized to under the rib cage. I called my doc yesterday but he was leaving out of town so I made an appointment for Monday...but this morning the pain was really bad, as was...
  3. Grumble grumble...spent a few hours in emerg yesterday with intense stomach pain for no good reason - waves of pain & cramping up my right side. Emerg was busy but they managed to rule out bladder infection and blood work ruled out appendicities and other inflammatory issues like IBD (white blood cell count I'm guessing). Anyway, I was waiting for more...
  4. Yesterday I bought a huge bag of Food Should Taste Good Multi grain chips...never saw them there before. They also carry Riceworks chips. I buy Freybe or Grimm's sausage and ham there - sometimes they have European weiners. Chorizio sausage is very good but very greasy...most of the others aren't so greasy. I have also bought chicken patties & sausage...
  5. I've been keeping an eye for them...never seen them here in Canada...
  6. I'm just learning my way around the soy thing. I've been gluten-free for about 7 years and had been doing well except for the last few months. I use Natura soy milk with my Mesa Sunrise cereal and Bragg's aminos occassionally. My usual breakfast is rice based - so soy for me is sporadic anyway (plus I know it's in a lot of processed stuff...don't eat much...
  7. I always pack Pepto Bismol tablets and tylenol, advil and rolaids....for if I get zinged. If I'm in a hotel - we quickly find a styrofoam cooler & stock it with what we can. Breakie is milk & cereal in the room (bring the cereal if nothing nearby). I pack rice crackers, Riceworks chips, lara bars, nut bars, my own salad dressings in small containers...
  8. Most didn't know- which is dangerous...about as dangerous as thinking you know !! Because we ate out all the time, I just got used to eating stuff with nothing on it - no sauce, no basting, etc. It was the safest way to go. I actually got glutened badly twice, and possibly some minor CC in there too. I didn't eat much on days I was ill - I also carried Pepto...
  9. I was in Montreal in June - with a school group - and had pretty good success. All our meals were eaten out. We had a great tour guide who advised restaurant staff, and after getting zinged once, I chimed in too - most places will listen to your requests. We went to Brisket Montreal (famous for it's smoked brisket) and while everyone else had sandwiches,...
  10. I'm throwing out the oil. I had salmon with lemon the next night with no problems so I'm definitely pinning it on the oil.....esp. after reading on that other post about cross contamination with wheat germ oil. Who knows - guess if it bugs me, just avoid it. Man this is hard sometimes !
  11. Doing that "what got me thing".... Simple supper last night - baked potatoes, frozen peas, and salmon steaks. Dressed the salmon steaks with sesame oil, molasses, brown sugar, fresh garlic, salt & pepper. Mildly sick - stomach cramps & a bit of nausea and wicked headache and sinus inflammation and fatigue. Sesame Oil - made in Taiwan - Six...
  12. Wow, I've been experiencing the same thing. I've noticed that when I go away, no matter how careful I am, I seem to get sick...and I bring a lot of my own food. Just got back from a one week camping trip where I switched my usual breakie for cereal & Silk soy milk and had stomach aches (D, etc.) all morning until I stopped eating that breakie the last...

  14. I may be wrong here but I think what happened is that Walmart jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon a few months back and then realized that gluten free doesn't JUST mean that there are no gluten ingredients (didn't think of CC issues). Either that or they were gluten-free mostly and then decided to forget about it and use factories for both gluten-free and...
  15. Wow...guess it happens a lot out there ! My SIL was doing this similar thing at Christmas. "Avoiding gluten". She had seen a homoepathic doctor who recommended it and she was taking all kinds of tinctures or whatever you call them...and still eating gluten when she wanted it. Yeah, she is about 50 pounds over weight, I think it might have been a diet thing...
  16. Eggs are indeed awesome protein - a complete protein and easily digestible. Keep some yolks though...good nutrition in there as well. My favorite breakfast (ha ha, celiac style).... 1 cup or so of steamed brown rice (I keep steamed rice in my fridge) 1 egg a sprinkle of dried cranberries & some chopped walnuts ...mix it all together and microwave...
  17. Safeway carries European weinders (Freybe I think) that are labelled gluten-free, think I found them at Sobey's as well. Costco also carries hot dogs in the big coolers next to the Freybe gluten-free sliced ham...labelled gluten-free but not sure if they are Freybe or not.
  18. I find Costco to be AWESOME....and I am in Canada. I buy a variety of gluten free sausage (chorizo, bratwurst, and more) - including hot dogs. I used to buy Topdogs in the local grocery store but now they have wheat starch. I can also get (all labelled gluten-free)... Riceworks chips Nature bars Quinoa Brown rice Sliced ham Chicken burgers Vitamins...
  19. I think it's Pacific I buy @ Costco in a case of 6 - it is labelled gluten-free on the box. I always get it mixed up with Imagine @ other stores because the labels are pretty similar - good to know that both are safe (I am in BC).
  20. Hurting in Nashville right now. Ugh - did my research, looking for gluten-free places to eat. We bought a styrofoam cooler for the room and keep it full of fresh ice to keep eating safe but it's nice to eat one meal out a day. Well...I no longer believe in gluten free menus ! I don't trust anywhere ! Went to a place called the Mellow Mushroom because it...
  21. Just picked up some Green's yesterday...really liked it. The store carried the Amber Ale, Blonde Ale, and Dubbel Dark....really liked the dark. Yum ! Great for summer....they were out of Redbridge though. I have tried Bard's too and thought it was fine...
  22. I've never had a problem with them either - eat them way too much ! I do avoid dairy quite a bit and some flavorings bother me (don't know what's in them that does so). I don't eat the parmesan ones for that reason...and sometimes the red chili ones don't sit well. I don't think it's a gluten reaction though - just the chemicals. It really depends on...
  23. For the most part I avoid it too - been zinged too many times. I used to eat Tostitos with my family when we would have the occassional nachos...but it was hit & miss and I got tired of the misses. Ugh. Now I eat Riceworks plain chips while they eat nachos. When we were in New York last summer we went to Trader Joes and I got hit a few times. Gotta...
  24. Interesting how we all cope.... I totally see our house becoming gluten-free when we are empty nesters...DH did consider having the house gluten-free but I kinda talked him out of it because the kids have sandwiches for school lunches (they are 9, 11, and 14)...and other gluteny foods. The kids actually know quite a lot about gluten - I think it's funny...
  25. Another post got me thinking about this - that & I talked to a guy whose wife is gluten-free. He was saying how it was hard for her, how hard it is to avoid gluten, and as an after thought he said how hard it was for him because he couldn't eat gluten around her. Huh. I'm mom in a family of 5 and the only gluten-free one. I have an island set...
