ARCHIVED Do You Contact Restaraunt If You Get Glutened?
NorthernElf replied to SGWhiskers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I ate at a restaurant in Calgary...well two actually...that had a gluten free menu and got sick. I emailed the head office, as well as the local chapter for celiac disease. One, I was choked because I was there on vacation & getting sick sucks ! Two, I thought they should know (local celiacs and the restaurant). I ate at a Joey Tomatos and a Cactus Club... -
Hi, I live in a mixed household as well - and with 5 of us living here, that isn't going to change as I am the only gluten-free person. When I get glutened and don't know where it is coming from, I start to think dairy or soy or whatever is also an issue...but usually it is a unknown gluten source (CC) that is getting me, although I do think dairy is an...

ARCHIVED So Nice "noel Nog"
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Safe or not ? The website says it's ok (ie. gluten free). My gut is not so sure. I had some one day, late afternoon. For most of the next morning my gut was clenching. No nausea, no noticeable D so I'm guessing if there was gluten it was a pretty small dose. I am intending on cutting back my dairy because I believe it is affecting me, so I tried this... -
I'm an older athlete...not sure I have any testimonials to include (diagnosed in my mid 30s). At any rate, I think one of the hardest things with dealing with celiacs is avoiding gluten everywhere. This may be especially hard for younger folks. I'm a lifeguard & I work with a lot of teens and people in their early 20s. I would imagine it would be hard...

From a fellow fitness fanatic... Sliced apple or banana smothered in peanut butter Rice crackers dipped in either egg salad or tuna salad Mrs. May's nut bars are yummy & quick (Costco) Supper leftovers - I often "overcook" I make tuna or salmon "muffins" with Kinnikinnick bread crumbs and egg (and wasabi!) gluten-free chocolate chip cookies &...

So it was a social setting with many people, potluck style. My intention was to not eat or to nibble on the fruit or cheese plates only. However, someone mentioned my being celiac so the hostess pipes up that they eat gluten free and have gluten free pasta, so she'd cook me some up (there was homemade chili & also pasta sauce). I thanked her and indulged...

You know, sometimes after a glutening I just about lose it ! It seems like everything bugs me - I think the glutening screws up my stomach & digestive tract and it just sorta gets super sensitive. Chances are, you have glutened yourself and now your GI system is still recovering. Of course, some people exeperience other intolerances. When I was glutened...

Hmmm....so I have a question. If Glutenease works then, would that confirm a non-celiac diagnosis...or does it relieve symptoms for celiacs and gluten intolerant alike, just that the celiac would, of course, experience some intestinal damage as well... I am one of those that was cutting out gluten by the time I got a blood test (negative) and while waiting...

ARCHIVED Dairy Dairy Dairy, Say It Ain't So...
NorthernElf posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
So here it is...brain fog, sinus pain, headaches, and stomach cramps - and rapid hearbeat and feeling like crap. This is in a controlled gluten free environment. Does this sound like dairy allergy ? No rash - just no energy and feeling terrible. I don't normally eat much dairy anyway but I do like cheese ! Anyway, just wondering. I had some asthma like symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Mexican Food, I Though It Was Safe?

I did a quick search to find the info I used to back this up - on top of the fact that I believe I have had issues with them. Here is what I found on the fly... Open Original Shared Link Hmm...when I preview that there are a bunch of ... in there, in the middle of the word showtopic. -
I'm with you on this ! I've been at this for about the same amount of time. I'm in Canada and I guess it doesn't help that I'm a fitness instructor - but I do get tired of people thinking I'm just a serial dieter or something (worse I guess since I'm a lean person to begin with). People are so used to healthy diets being a CHOICE that they can CHEAT on, they...

Hey JewlesD... You will be the center of attention at first...maybe...but after awhile you can do your thing without people really taking too much notice. You don't have to announce what you're doing. My portable lunch bag is kinda cute - it has a shoulder strap and two insulated compartments. It's not too big, big enough to hold a water bottle, some fruit...

ARCHIVED Im Az And Now Possible Celiac
NorthernElf replied to trigirl3225's topic in Sports and Fitness
I agree - don't cut out the gluten pre-testing. I started going gluten-free and had a negative blood test and had to wait over three months for the scope. It was also negative but I am a living breathing gluten detector ! All I have to do is eat something, wait about 15 minutes and I can tell you it contains gluten...then leave me alone for a few hours because... -
I'm probably the only one who will say this but YOU need to look after you and get used to this whole gluten situation. Not easy, I know. Ok, I've been at it a little longer than you. I travel everywhere with my own food, either carry it with me or it's in my vehicle. While the rest of your party was ordering their food, you could have gone to get your...

ARCHIVED Mexican Food, I Though It Was Safe?
NorthernElf replied to lostinHI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Things to consider... The dip could have gluten in it, or be affected by cross contamination. The chips...well, likewise. I went to a Moxie's restaurant once and asked for the gluten free menu. I sat and watched the rest of my party have nachos for an appetizer (ugh, torture...esp. when one is hungry!) because the server told us that they... -
ARCHIVED Help! Wheat-free Vs. Gluten-free
NorthernElf replied to calyptogena's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I wouldn't touch the dressing - it's the natural flavors that could get you...or cross contamination from another dressing that is manufactured in the plant. If you can't confirm it's gluten-free, it's just not worth the risk. -

I'm in British Columbia. I too love some of the Kinnikinnick stuff. I buy their sunflower & flaxseed bread mix and make it, slice it, & freeze it. I also eat their english muffins and cinnamon buns. Ugh, didn't like the cinnamon buns the first time I tried them but they grew on me. I also like Quejos out of Vancouver - they make a mannioc... -

NorthernElf replied to lsmall05's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Nice to see such a positive attitude about all this. However, do keep in mind that some folks just look at wheat and get sick, LOL. Seriously, we do have to allow ourselves to feel upset about this. I'm good most of the time - hey, the celiac diet can be very healthy. However, I have my days where I'm choked about it all and get a bit down - usually when... -
I found my incidences of pains & aches went down dramatically when I went gluten-free. I also bought good shoes (I wear Asics 2120 at the moment since I pronate a bit). I used to get hip bursitis and plantar fasciitis regularly and it was quite painful. Sometimes the outside of my knee would hurt as well. Now I run almost pain free and a lot more. I'm...

ARCHIVED The Price Of gluten-free
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Do you think it's overly inflated ??? I'm in Canada. I also live in a smaller center (12000 or so) and I cannot believe the cost of gluten-free. There are certain products I "need". My bread of choice is Kinnikinnick's sunflower & flaxseed bread - I buy the mix and bake it myself (better than the made loaves). I also like their english muffins. I... -
I don't know what the "VH" stands for but does anyone know if this brand is on the safe list ? In Canada Extra Foods (and probably Superstore) carries it. I looked at it the other day & I noticed that it's lower sodium soy sauce doesn't list wheat - is it safe ? They have a variety of other sauces. The yellow Extra Foods brand doesn't have wheat listed...

After a wicked virus that triggered my celiacs, GERD was a big issue for me. I'm one of those that had stomach issues all my life but "mild". I had reflux when I was pregnant, a bit - but that is expected to a point. Well, after this virus I had reflux a lot, stomach pain, and lots of acid. I also had sinus issues. I had that barium thing where they can...

I think I understand the desire to do a gluten challenge. Wouldn't it be nice to have a piece of paper that simply states that you are celiac or cannot tolerate gluten ? To have it in black & white ? I've been dealing with this for four years. There are many stages to acceptance. At first I was ill, had reflux, ached, was so tired & crabby, had...

Just thought I'd write a short bit about my experience. I got glutened a few times and now I have some tips to help others avoid this ! Read, read, read labels. Things that are safe here aren't necessarily safe over there. My second night there we had lamb with mint sauce and I was pretty ill the next morning. Many of their condiments over there contain...
