ARCHIVED Milk?! Thoughts, Veterans, Anyone?
NorthernElf replied to oceangirl's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I find my sensitivity to dairy to be pretty sporadic. Some days I can get away with dairy, other days forget it ! I can handle a little gluten free pizza with cheese but milk and cookies is too much (ugh, I love gluten-free chocolate chip cookies with a glass of milk). Sometimes I can handle a Dairy Queen sundae, others day I get mild stomach cramps a little... -
Just thought I'd pass this one on - I subscribe to About.com's celiac newsletter and this one came today. Hmmm.... Open Original Shared Link Thoughts ? I was considering getting this. I wonder how many 'unknown' celiacs have this vaccine.

ARCHIVED Mcdonalds
NorthernElf replied to noucha's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hardly rock solid evidence but this is what I found on the fly - it's from forums. My rule (or myself) is to simply avoid it if it is risky, so I don't eat at McDs. Open Original Shared Link Open Original Shared Link -
ARCHIVED Mcdonalds
NorthernElf replied to noucha's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I see you haven't had a reply yet... I'm in Canada and the hashbrowns & fries are NOT gluten free. Yeah, they have a fries only frier but they coat the fries with something. When I get that fries craving I go to New York Fries because all they do is fries. Unfortunately, we don't have one where I live so it's a rare treat. Just watch what you... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Please Talk Me Off The Ledge
NorthernElf replied to shacon-bacon's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I love food too - & I totally understand where you are coming from. I've been dealing with this for over five years and have gotten a pretty good handle on it - most of the time. I'd say that 99% of the time I'm ok and I can "suck it up". There is that one percent when I get po'd. That one percent is usually when I am at a restaurant, a social function... -
Nuts... I like slivered almonds and walnuts. Not too big on peanuts either but I do eat some peanut butter - better success when I buy organic, pure peanut butter (nothin' but peanuts). I have my own personal jar with "Mom" written on it so no one contaminates it ! Mrs. Mays snacks are available at Costco in individual serving size bags...just bought...

Hello fellow runner ! I too have dropped some weight since developing celiacs a few years ago but I'm guessing having to eat a cleaner diet had something to do with it ! I too am careful what I eat - always trying to get a bit of fat/protein/carbohydrates in every meal or snack. I work as a lifeguard & instructor as well so I have a bag of snacks in...

Don't stop eating gluten !! That is - you said you are still waiting for the biopsy, right ? Don't stop eating it yet because it could affect results. If your wait isn't too long, maybe not. However, I started eliminating gluten, got a negative blood test, and then had to wait three months for a biopsy. My stupid doc didn't tell the gastro guy to look...

Ok, so I'm part of a family of 5 (I'm mom). About 4-5 years ago I had this massive virus that left me unable to eat for over a week (well, unable to keep anything in) and suddenly I'm celiac (after years of stomach issues). Anyway...it's been one heck of a learning curve and a long journey that is still ongoing. I was wondering what people out there who are...

ARCHIVED Horrible Joint/ligaments And Recovery?
NorthernElf replied to Chevelle's topic in Sports and Fitness
Hey fellow sports enthusiast... I know where you are coming from - I'm a big runner and fitness instructor, I am active pretty much every day. Celiacs hit me about 4-5 years ago and I was tired & sore A LOT. I had hip pain, ankle pain, wrist pain, etc. I got pins & needles down my arm, one leg, and sometimes even into my forehead (scary!). I saw... -
ARCHIVED Mesa Sunrise Flakes
NorthernElf replied to KelBelle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat the Mesa Sunrise Flakes quite regularly & have never had a problem - have you been glutened otherwise lately ? Could it be the milk ? Did you toss anything else on top that could have gotten you ? -
ARCHIVED Teriyaki & Bbq Sauces
NorthernElf replied to FoxersArtist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I like Bulls Eye barbeque sauces - there are many flavours. Have you looked at Walmart to see if Great Value makes a teriyaki sauce - I have noticed that that brand will list gluten after the ingredients list (I use their soy sauce). -
ARCHIVED Not A Rant, Just A Ramble
NorthernElf replied to bakingbarb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I KNOW I got glutened at Wendy's once. I had the chili and a baked potato. We were travelling and I was otherwise eating only labelled gluten free food that I had brought and I was so happy to stop at a Wendy's to eat a hot meal during a long drive. I was definitely glutened - stomach clenched, tired, nauseated, headache, seeking the bathroom. Nice... ... -
ARCHIVED Venting....i'll Just Stop Talking To Anyone
NorthernElf replied to MELINE's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ouch - unreal what your own mom did to you ! I gotta say though, when I first started eliminating gluten I *think* my family was thinking I was just doing a diet thing. I'm lean and very active but I have always had stomach issues & a nasty nasty virus changed my life forever - I was ill for a few weeks & unable to eat and my digestive tract... -
ARCHIVED Airplane Food/taking Food On Airplanes
NorthernElf replied to leadmeastray88's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I'm a Canadian travelling to England in July. I was able to get a gluten free meal on Air Canada. Definitely call your airline...some flights are too long to go without safe food ! As for packing food, I understand the UK has gluten free readily availble, to some extent, but I have some internet sleuthing to do to make sure !! Not sure if I will pack any... -
ARCHIVED Food Attachment Issue
NorthernElf replied to Jazzanova's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I guess misery loves company ! I have a bag of food in my locker at work, I have a Bora Bora "granola" bar in my purse (gluten-free, from Coscto!), and I travel with a shoulder strap lunch bag, just in case. I'm very active so I do get truly hungry and I am miserable when there is nothing to eat. If I'm hungry I am doubly miserable when others are... -
You are new to this whole celiac deal so cut yourself some slack. It does take a period of adjustment, some denial, some anger (!), and so forth. I've been dealing with it all for about 4 years now and I've gotten more comfortable with it. Sure, it still sucks - but it REALLY sucks to be sick, so one deals with it. It also sucks to miss out on events solely...

ARCHIVED Craisins - Safe ?
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Looking for info on this one. Looks like they ought to be but the website I found says the chocolate covered ones aren't so it was unclear whether the regular ones are. Anyone ? -
Hi, It's tough, I know. I often use exercise as a remedy for a glutening, mind you these days any glutenings are very accidental, usually just a cross contamination thing since I am very careful what I eat. Research is your best defense - I scour these forums and the internet for information. If I don't know if it is safe, I don't eat it. It did take me...

When I have been glutened, I feel a little like I am at the mercy of the universe, and running makes me feel like I can still control something. LOL, I like that ... and I agree ! I run and it is a great escape. There is no reason to use celiacs as an excuse not to exercise BUT do make sure your ducks are in a row, so to speak. Iron levels ...

I love the sorghum scones recipe off the Bob's Redmill bag. 1 1/4 c sorghum flour 1/2 cup tapioca starch 1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 3/4 t baking soda 1 tsp xanthum gum 4 Tbsp sugar 4 Tbsp butter or margarine 2/3 c plain yogurt or nondairy milk 1 egg 1/3 c currants 2 Tbsp milk for brushing top Oven @ 400 F. In food processor (I just use a bowl...

Has the eye doctor looked for retinal detachment ? If he hasn't, make him ASAP ! My daughter has a different condition that makes her susceptible to retinal detachment and it needs to be caught early to be "fixable". Symptoms include flashes, as well as seeing floaters and a narrowing of peripheral vision. We have spoken with other people with her condition...

ARCHIVED What To Eat When Sick?
NorthernElf replied to jayhawkmom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you like to make your own, Knorr has a "Simply" line of broths that don't list gluten (ie. Simply Beef broth, Simply Chicken, and Vegetable). I buy this and have had success ! Knorr's other soups clearly list gluten after the ingredients ("may contain traces of gluten"). -
ARCHIVED Contiki Tour Through Great Britian
NorthernElf replied to Prairie Girl's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Is there a web site for stores or restaurants in England that have gluten free products ?!?!? I'm going to the York area in July for 3 weeks - near Pickering. We will have access to a kitchen and I want to be able to eat well ! I doubt I could bring much with me with our regulations - I don't know what to bring anyway ! Any info would be appreciated - esp... -
ARCHIVED Hershey Eggies - Safe Or Not ?
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, I'm thinking not. My week has been spent with painful D and stomach cramps and a bit of my usual sinus pain - lots of fatigue, mostly because I don't think I'm getting much nutrition from what I ate this week ! The only culprit I can think of is the huge bag of Hershey Eggies that I've been nibbling on. Yep, the kids candy. It was such a...
