  1. Costco eh ??? I wish I had one here in town - closest one is over an hour away...but I will have to check it out. Thing is, those Extra Foods chickens USED to be ok - I've been having celiac symptoms for over 3 years and never had a major problem with them and we ate a lot of them during the summer ! However, once I'm glutened, it is definitely off my...
  2. Note to self - when I feel like crap, look at what I'm eating !!! Extra Foods baked chicken - makes for an easy supper BUT has gluten. Last week I was feeling so tired - the kind of tired where you can't barely sit up - and my sinuses were bad, but dry. I was also having stomach cramps but my kids all had the flu so I just thought I was next. Fast forward...
  3. Celiac disease has been linked to Spincter of Oddi dysfunction Really ?!?!??! I have never read this before. My doc is such a dolt ! When all my issues started 3 years ago I had a scope (after having being gluten free for 3 months) and this was my doc's conclusion - dunno how many 'faulty sphincter' jokes we've made up ! Why, at the ripe ol' age of...
  4. Truly bread like - impossible ! I like Kinnikinnick sunflower & flaxseed bread - and then I tried their mix & it is even better. I make a loaf, let it cool, slice it, lay it out on the breadboard and freeze it for an hour or so, and then put it in a bag in the freezer for handy use. A few slices never make it to the freezer - fresh it is awesome...
  5. My breakie of choice is about a cup of brown rice mixed with an egg and a handful of dried cranberries & nuked. It has it all - complex carbs, protein, and a little fat. I steam 3 cups or so of rice & store it in the fridge so it's handy in the morning. When I do eat cold cereal, I like Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise - I buy it in bulk at Safeway but...
  6. I gave up on everyone else and I am in control. Wherever I travel, I take food with me. To hockey tournaments overnight, I've actually made a homemade gluten-free lasagna and taken our small microwave with us so I could enjoy a safe, decent meal. Elsewhere, I bought myself a nice two compartment lunch bag with strap so I can pack my gluten-free goodies...
  7. How about your pans - are they gluten free...I have had gluten issues for almost 4 years and finally bought myself a set of my own baking pans - muffin pan, loaf pan, and cookie sheet because the gluten free mixes still got me...it worked.
  8. Hmm, I don't have this problem but then maybe it depends on what your symptoms are ? Mine are usually the aches & pains (which exercise helps), the sinus issues, and headache. I do get gut cramping and some bathroom issues, but usually a delayed reaction. I could certainly see that if you are one of those folks who must seek out a bathroom immediately...
  9. From what I've read on the 'net these should be safe...but I think they got me yesterday. Anyone had a reaction to the Old Dutch Salt & Vinegar potato chips ??
  10. I'm in Canada too and as a rule I don't eat ham or any packaged meats...EXCEPT the ham I can buy at Costco that clearly states "gluten free" on it (they have pepperoni too - Grimms). Watch the best before dates though - you buy a good size package of the ham and it expires (it seems) fairly quickly. I freeze the pepperoni and it freezes well. I find it...
  11. I don't know why it feels so funny to do so, but throw it out. For years I found myself eating stuff I didn't even like because it was given to me - boxed chocolates come to mind, really don't like the centers of a lot of them but ate them anyway ! Now that I'm gluten free, I have no qualms about tossing stuff. Put it this way - the gift is given in...
  12. I use this recipe from Recipezaar.com - but for the 1 1/2 cup flour I substitute 1/2 cup brown rice flour (or white), 1/2 cup soy flour, 1/4 cup white rice flour, and 1/4 cup garbanzo bean flour for some protein (can't use too much of this or the flavor is off). I also add ground flaxseed (1 tbsp or so) and psyllium husks from the health food store (about...
  13. I have my own mayonaise, Becel margarine, etc. in the fridge since other dip their knives in and spread things on wheat bread and then "redip". Squeezables are another way to go - if it was just me & DH I would buy those (but I have 3 kids). So...I bought a small margarine and wrote "MOM" on it in permanent marker, I just refill it as I get a new larger...
  14. Since Terra Chips were mentioned... Wanted to mention that the Mediterranean flavored Terra Chips have Wheat Starch listed in the ingredients...found out the hard way.
  15. Oh dear. don't do it ! It is SO not worth it. I made a big Christmas breakfast and as I was cooking nibbled a couple of small pieces of bacon...and that cost me 2 hours of feeling pretty crappy and I was SO careful the rest of the day. My justification was that I would try a small amount and if I felt fine, I would eat some for breakfast. That was my...
  16. Hold up a sec - I just read the package of Xmas M&Ms that I have - I don't seen wheat on the label anywhere. There is corn maltodextrin, soy, but no wheat. It also only mentions possible peanut contamination as far as allergen info goes. ??????
  17. It's been awhile but when I last read labels on the cans of frosting they listed wheat starch.
  18. I'm with Phyllis - *most* of the time it won't bother you & you'll get used to it (and your family will reap the benefits!). At least with pizza they can take it out (bring it home) and maybe you could pick yourself up something gluten-free elsewhere. No, it's not always easy. I sat in a staff meeting yesterday and they brought in a ton of Xmas...
  19. Do you guys have New York Fries kiosks in your malls in the States ? All they do is fries - I read somewhere that they are safe BUT some seasonings aren't so either stick to just salt or look it up (I guess they have different ones ?). When I go to the city over Christmas, I'm going to try some !
  20. IMHO, those chocolate truffle brownies are just TOO good not to make another attempt ! I make mine in my own silicone mini muffin "tin" - let them cool, pop them out, and freeze them in ziplocs. No need to worry about cutting them up !
  21. It's odd, isn't it ? About 3-4 years ago I had a very severe flu like virus that took me right down - I couldn't keep food in my body for over a week. I wound up in emergency taking in two bags of IV fluids and a having a shot to stop my guts from spasming. After that it took a long time to be able to eat and not be nauseous and feeling ill. Other symptoms...
  22. Open Original Shared Link This is the Gluten Free Girl's website - btw, she has a new book out that is interesting. Some of these recipes aren't "practical" to me - where I live I will never find good quality lemon olive oil, for example. But I have bookmarked some of the recipes to try some holiday baking with my kids. We do Xmas at my parents so I need...
  23. You *could* have been mildly glutened. It really depends on what your usual symptoms are. I know a woman who will be sitting on the toilet throwing up if she eats gluten (yikes) and then there are those that have no huge bowel issues and find out they have celiacs incidentally. Case in point, I know another woman who is diabetic who had a scope because she...
  24. Yep, wheat starch is bad. I LOVE Tera chips - but watch out for the Mediterranean ones ! I glutened myself a couple of weeks ago at Costco. I bought what I thought was regular Tera chips and scarfed done a couple of handfuls driving to another store. Ugh - it was quick enough for me to check the ingredients when I stopped and there it was - wheat starch...
  25. I have my own toaster. I have my own cutting boards. Recently, I bought my own "pans" - silicone muffin & loaf pans and a silicone sheet to line my regular cookie tin. I am sure I was getting glutened from the scratched teflon pans that had cooked wheat stuff. I have my own ziplocs, pantry shelf if gluten-free goods, and the top shelf of the...
