ARCHIVED I'm Planning My Cheat Day
NorthernElf replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Are you new to all this ? When I first started out I was in denial for awhile, and I was also less sensitive. The idea of a cheat day now is ludicrous. I'm thinking maybe you are one of the less symptomatic ones ? For me to do what you plan is so not worth it - it would be like deciding to have a flu/hangover mixed in with some arthritic like pain... -
ARCHIVED Strange New Symptoms...any Ideas ?
NorthernElf replied to NorthernElf's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
At this point, no I'm not excluding anything else - limiting dairy a bit when things are already out of whack but that's it. Fluid milk and chocolate seem to bother me, hard cheese (cheddar) not so much. I haven't changed any of my supplements - I typically use Kirkland brand (no gluten), no new bottles. I'll try again tomorrow to get a doc appointment... -
ARCHIVED Strange New Symptoms...any Ideas ?
NorthernElf posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ok, puzzled by this one. I've been dealing with celiac for 5 years. I have some pretty bad reflux issues so I take Zantac 150s pretty regularly. In the last 2-3 months I've had "episodes" of weird GI symptoms. I get a lot of burning on the left and right sides of my stomach, I get cramps and burning in my abdomen, esp, on the right side. I have a hard time... -
ARCHIVED How Can You Be Sure What Is Ccing You?
NorthernElf replied to foodiegurl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most of the time I can figure it out - it takes a bit of sleuthing. I don't know what I would do without the internet - it's so easy to look up ingredients and visit forums such as this to find answers or ask questions. I can detail my home for the best gluten avoiding strategies I can, but it's mostly away from my home that I get "got". My best strategy... -
ARCHIVED I Am Having A Hard Time With This!
NorthernElf replied to johncgaiser's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
This is an interesting topic for sure - I'm thinking having kids at home makes a big difference. I'm the celiac in my family - we have three kids 13 and under. I do not have a gluten free home...I couldn't afford it ! Having said that, many meals I make are gluten free by default but lunches would be very hard. I have one small section of the counter set... -

How about Old El Paso ??? Anyone else have luck with this one ? -
ARCHIVED Baked Kettle Chips...bbq Flavor
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm away with family so naturally my diet (and stomach) are not normal ! Anyway, I bought some of these baked Kettle Chips the other day - Hickory Honey BBQ flavor - and here come the stomach cramps, midnight nausea, etc. They do say gluten free on them but I honestly cannot see what else could have gotten me. Anyone out there have problems with these... -
ARCHIVED Chicken
NorthernElf replied to heatherjane's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I used to eat those lovely roast chickens from Extra Foods (Superstore) all the time...but now they make me ill. Man, I miss those yummy chickens... -
ARCHIVED Kinnikinnick...hope This Isn't A Trend...
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So I really like the KK pizza shells - easy, convenient and a loaded one is good enough for supper with some veggies. HOWEVER ! Now the 8" pizza shell has become a 7" pizza shell...not so filling. I guess it's a sign of the times but I find it makes a difference. Has anyone else noticed any shrinkage - KK or other products ??? -
I'm lazy so I buy icing - I've had success with the canned Great Value brand from Walmart. However - some brands DO have wheat starch in them, so read those labels !

ARCHIVED Need Help Getting Back In The Game
NorthernElf replied to WhoKnew?'s topic in Sports and Fitness
I'm a fitness instructor - I teach 12 classes a week. I'm also a runner. Anyway, just want to say it is possible to do activity and be a celiac ! As far as eating goes, you need to prepare. My daily breakfast is a cup of cooked brown rice tossed with some dried cranberries and slivered almonds and one egg - and microwaved. It has protein, complex carbs... -
ARCHIVED Zantac No Longer Working...
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It's been a rough week. I have had a lot of stomach cramps and burning in my stomach. I have been gluten free but I do like my coffee ! Anyway, sorry if it's too much info but add some female hormones in & the monthly thing & I have had some wicked stomach issues. I think my Zantac 150s no longer can contain it. Normally, I take one every am, get... -
ARCHIVED Well Meaning Stores, Restaurants And Friends - What Do You Do?
NorthernElf replied to Klauren's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Where I work food abounds ! Everything - from brownies to cakes to cookies and sometimes they bring in pizza. I just make sure I have a stock of my own food (we have a fridge) so I can eat my stuff at the same time. One day someone brought in a container of gluten free cupcakes - they were in the fridge and everyone was telling me to try them. I refused ... -
ARCHIVED Do Your Parents Think You Are Crazy?
NorthernElf replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yeah, I guess my folks go both ways too - supportive and then...not so much. A couple of visits ago (they live 6 hours away) my mom bough gluten-free pasta and chips and such for me, which I thought was nice. At Christmas she had a lasagna made for us to eat when we arrived - NOT gluten-free. Very frustrating since we got there at 7 and I was hungry... -
ARCHIVED Maynard Wine Gums - Sours
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, so on the lists out there they are gluten-free...but I think my system is telling me otherwise. Has anyone else had a problem with these ? FWIW, I don't have a problem with the regular wine gums, though I only have them sporadically. They do contain "natural & artificial flavors"...maybe that's where it is ? Possible ingredient change ?? -
ARCHIVED Nestle Polar Popsicles
NorthernElf replied to boobybabs's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I believe Nestle is a safe company - any gluten will be disclosed. Anyone back me up on this one ??? -
ARCHIVED Natural Remedies For Throat/sinus Infection After Cc
NorthernElf replied to YoloGx's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sounds like you are doing all you can - of course no gluten at all would be the best ! When there are colds around or I feel the least bit sinus-y I am ULTRA careful around gluten (I'm the only celiac in a house of 5). I have also found that avoiding dairy at these times is a good idea. When my sinuses are already sensitive it doesn't seem to take much... -
ARCHIVED Is There A Light At The End Of The Tunnel In Regards To Sports?
NorthernElf replied to loxleynew's topic in Sports and Fitness
I've been dealing with celiacs for about 5 years. It does get better and being "fanatical" (as someone said!) about avoiding gluten is a must ! I also *mostly* avoid dairy as it seems to bother me. FWIW, I'm a fitness instructor and big time fitness fan, runner, etc. Currently I'm teaching 2-4 classes a day during the week so I'm not doing too much on... -
I feel your pain. I'm a mom of 3 with an understanding husband...and there is gluten in my house. While it is nice to have a strong social support network, we don't all have it - it is totally up to us to watch what goes into our bodies. Perhaps if you strongly stick to your diet those around you will begin to get it - they will see that you mean business...

ARCHIVED Confused About Cross Contamination
NorthernElf replied to GFinBC's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hey, I'm also from BC...and it took me about 4 months to get my biopsy (a few years ago). I agree with the last post - by the time you get your biopsy it likely won't show anything anyway. No one told me I shouldn't stop eating gluten BEFORE the biopsy - so I did. By the time I had the biopsy, there was nothing to see. However, I most definitely have a reaction... -
ARCHIVED Oh Canada!
NorthernElf replied to theceliachusband's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Northern BC here (where it's a balmy -36C this am)... I had a similar experience with my GP - I'm a pretty fit & otherwise healthy person & I think she just decided I couldn't have celiacs...but I call myself one. I had a negative blood test too, a negative H Pylori test and, while she did send me for a scope, she sent me for one to look at damage... -
ARCHIVED What You Would Like That Is Gluten Free, Your Choice! Question
NorthernElf replied to ConfusedLexi's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Oh, that's easy - Twizzlers - red licorice. I can modify and make many things gluten-free that I like that *mostly* taste good but I can't get gluten-free red licorice ! -
ARCHIVED Old El Paso Salsa (mild)...safe ?
NorthernElf replied to NorthernElf's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I don't believe I have an issue with corn, I do eat it at other times with no issues. Does anyone know of a salsa brand I can trust ???? I'm in Canada. -
ARCHIVED Old El Paso Salsa (mild)...safe ?
NorthernElf posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ok, so I'm a big nacho fan. I used to munch on Tostitos & Old El Paso salsa but didn't feel well, got headaches, and some stomach cramps. Today I tried the plain Rice Works chips with that Old El Paso salsa and same thing ! Rice Works are labelled gluten free & I've never had issues with them. I was under the impression that the salsa was safe...is... -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed- How To Explain It To People
NorthernElf replied to Trachellium's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I say I have celiacs and that gluten makes me feel like I have a combination of a hangover and the flu. No fun. I have found that saying gluten intolerance makes folks think I can still have some gluten - like some folks with lactose intolerance can get away with certain milk products in small amounts. FWIW, I never got a diagnosis because I went...
