  1. Have you tried using rice flour to dust the (gluten) dough?
  2. Somebody just posted the other day that immodium contains gluten, so you might want to look for another product.
  3. On the one hand, I think she was projecting her personal feelings about dietary restrictions. On the other hand, I am one of the most adventurous eaters around, but if I find a restaurant with a menu I like in a strange town or foreign country, I see no reason not to return over and over again to sample lots of different items on the menu. I don't see that...
  4. I cook everything, and I never once needed to use malt for anything during my wheat-eating days. Except maybe beer-making...
  5. Funny, it redirected me to the front page the first time I clicked the link.
  6. Good luck. Looks like a good plan. By the way, it's not impossible to have a gluten-free birthday cake.
  7. You don't have to get a doctor to order the gene test. Enterolab does them by mail.
  8. I went to Wild Oats when it opened. The store was attractive and well kept. I was dissappointed in the prices - higher than the local natural foods store that they're driving out of business - and the selection - lots of processed packaged convenience foods for people who have to have that, and not so many whole foods. I can't afford the meat or produce...
  9. You still need to read the ingredients list on the label to see if they've changed since the list was made. If there's anything questionable, write down the word to check on it and don't buy it until you're sure.
  10. It's in my long-term plans to come up with recipes like this. In the short-term, I think the easiest solution is to take a suitable white cake mix and add a few egg yolks for color.
  11. If I ate a bowl of grapes on an empty stomach, it would give me D and the shakes, and I'm not sensitive to sulfites.
  12. It sounds like your husband doesn't have any symptoms, so the chances are he doesn't have celiac, and the tests would come up negative anyway, except maybe for the Enterolab gene test. Most tests have high rates of false negatives. You need to get your husband to buy into a gluten-free test diet for the kids - even for just a week or two. There's no...
  13. Wait a minute. You say there are multiple studies that show that infants who are not introduced to solid foods before 7 months grow up to be adults who can't use spoons? Why don't I know any of these adults? And what about cultures who don't use spoons or pureed baby foods?
  14. The traditional method of stripping the seasoning from a cast iron pan right down to the metal is to put it into a fire and leave it until the fire burns out. Sounds like you've got it down pat.
  15. I had a white gazpacho containing, among other things, garlic, oil, blanched almonds, and bread (sigh), and garnished with white grapes. I guess somebody could sub a white rice bread for the wheat bread. Ajo blanco con uvas de Malaga 1/2 pound stale white bread, without crusts 2 garlic cloves, peeled pinch of salt 2-3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons...
  16. Gazpacho!
  17. Unfortunately it's been so long since the abuses that caused food regulation to be instituted in the first place that people don't remember how bad it was, and think that regulations are inhibiting improvements in safety and labeling. The opposite is true.
  18. vinegar=su wheat, barley=mugi, komugi raw rice=komi cooked rice Japanese style=gohan Probably broken, but... I can't eat wheat. Mugi to komugi wa taberaremasen. Is there wheat in the sushi vinegar? Mugi to komugi wa sushi no su ni arimasu ka?
  19. I would be very suspicious of the authenticity of any Japanese restaurant that didn't use rice vinegar in their sushi rice.
  20. Are you lactose intolerant, casein sensitive/intolerant, or a combination? When I was just lactose intolerant, I was able to eat all cheese and fermented dairy, and other products in moderation so long as they were part of a recipe and a meal. When I found that I was sensitive to milk, I stopped all the dairy products except for fresh butter on bread and...
  21. You see, soy sauce just "happens".
  22. BTW, I am allergic to Neosporin, and the resulting lesion looks just like a serious infection.
  23. I buy the Bouchard white buckwheat flour, it's marvelous stuff.
  24. I've been lactose intolerant my whole adult life. When I first noticed it the symptom was abdominal bloating and gas. After being essentially gluten-free for a few years, I decided to try a 'challenge'. I drank a tall hot, flavored milk. Within half an hour I had diarrhea, then again about 6 hours later - classic lactose intolerance. At the six hour point...
  25. Here's how I see it: Celiac is a late stage of gluten intolerance. So all celiacs have gluten intolerance, but not all gluten intolerants have celiac yet.
