  1. Me, too. I have very dry skin. My skin drinks in lotion. I get mild rashes in different areas all the time. I also get hives a couple times a year. I have had dry, scaly patches and then they just go away. I use vaseline and baby oil as well as lotions. I make sure the lotions don't have oats or anything in them. Good luck.
  2. I get vertigo really bad every two years or so. I have ringing in my ears every day or so. My regular doctor said she saw fluid in there, so she sent me to a specialist. He said there was no fluid, that my first doc was probably confused since my ears do not shine (healthy ears without fluid shine inside) because I had tubes when I was a kid. My hearing...
  3. So the Ranger struck out. (crowd jeers.) For date three, I agreed to go to his house to watch a DVD. After inviting me, he warned me that women never return for another date after coming over. (Music: DUN-dun- DUNNNNN!) He said it's because he has no furniture, and they must be materialistic women. (mental red flag raises in my mind here) I responded...
  4. When I visited Maine and Boston last fall, it was quite easy to eat gluten free. I was envious, as I live in the whole grain crazy land of california. LEGAL SEAFOODS has gluten free croutons on their salad, gluten free soup, etc. I ate lots of oysters and seafood. The restaurants I have in my celiac folder are all for Maine. I eat brownies from Outback...
  5. Ok, I must confess that before I "left" the ex unbeknowingst to him as he slept, before gathering up my gluten free food, I spied his laundry I'd folded sitting there. I took his favorite (You know how guys get really attached to things) t-shirt from his trip to Italy and I took a Sharpie and wrote something on the back (he is always in a hurry getting...
  6. Keep it up, you can do it! Think of it this way, which might you regret: getting tested or not getting tested? I doubt you would regret getting tested. It's rough, though. I know. My doctor took me off gluten for months then had me eat some for a week and did the blood test, which was "inconclusive". I had elevated levels of that igA or whatever it...
  7. Can't wait to try it! I have yet to find a chocolate chip cookie that tastes good and doesn't mess with my tummy (some of the gluten-free flours mess with me). Thanks bunches!
  8. Back and leg pain were my main symptoms. Same with my dad. For example, my back pain was AWFUL in airplanes. Now that I don't eat the PRETZELS they give out, I have NO back pain. What a relief! They almost operated on my dad's back, but he got a second opinion who knew it wasn't his back and did tests which led them to find out about the wheat. My...
  9. Celiacs qualify for the 125 plan at work where you pretax spending! I get to pretax the DIFFERENCE of cost in gluten free items and regular gluteny items of similar food types. I'm about to sign up for it. I have to get a letter from my doctor to qualify me. The woman also told me I have to get a copy of a price list from a grocery store to show comparable...
  10. My not-so-personal, so-called Life...Well, things the boyfriend was saying hadn't been adding up. He began staying up weird hours. He had no trouble spontaneously getting off work to go on trips with me. His responses to "how was your day" didn't make sense. So, I decided to call his work and found out he was no longer employed there. And, of course...
  11. Tricky Gluten-y foods: Imitation crab (it's in the stuff that binds it together) Must trust that restaurants use real when asking Some Chicken (injected with chicken broth for flavor) Beans (in Mexico and some Mexican restaurants, they use flour to thicken the beans) cornbread Root Beer (some brands) au jus Lindt chocolate and some others like Godiva...
  12. Hello, I'm a celiac in the area. I have had three doctors, none of which know anything about celiac disease. If you have Kaiser insurance, I believe, there is a doctor in Redlands that my fellow celiacs in my support group recommend. We have a meeting Tuesday, May 20 and you could come, or I could ask for you. I will try to pm you with more info...
  13. I've been baking and heating and knoshing and eating: 365 Pancake and Waffle Mix- Good, not spectacular Whole Foods Market Frozen baguettes- Amazing. A new favorite. 365 Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix- yuck Kinnickinnick White Cake Mix- yuckity yuck-o; had to toss it- "egg-y"flavor-eww! Trader Joe's Brownie mix (in brown bag)- good, but I reacted (and...
  14. I, too, have been playing Sherlock Holmes to figure out why gluten-free packaged baked goods make me sick, too. In my support group, they tell me that some people react to canola oil and some to guar gum (which is cheaper, but harder on digestion than xanthan gum), or to sorghum. SO, I took note of two baked goods that definitely made me sick (I didn...
  15. I have tried so many gluten free chocolate chip cookies and I don't like any. Funny, I had just put some in the oven when I saw this. This time I tried "365" brand. Crumbly beyond belief. The dough didn't taste good, but the cookies had ok flavor. Pamela's give me serious bloating. Must be the flours they use. Gluten Freeda's frozen kind are not good...
  16. I think my reply is being taken out of context. It was a PARENT who brought those donuts to that kindergarten class. It is very often PARENTS who bring snacks to school. Another kid brought cupcakes TODAY, oddly enough. And it's the PTA Parents who use PTA funds to buy crackers and juice to hand out before testing, because they are concerned for...
  17. Celiacmegan, this CRACKS me UP!! I love this one! Do you have any Seinfeld-like responses for that question we get, "What happens to you when you eat gluten?"
  18. For a small fee, you can take your X-RAYS with you (you could fib and say it would be too difficult to make it to the current location for all those visits or something) and GET A SECOND OPINION!
  19. I agree with the EAT AHEAD of TIME and CHECK menu ahead of time (I check online and keep a file of menu printouts in my car-I usually meet dates at the restaurant), don't order salads (there always seem to be crouton bits or something naughty hiding in there). I also agree with BRING YOUR OWN food ---I take it further than the purse--- I stock gluten-free...
  20. The Whole Foods Market finally opened (about a 40 minute drive...we do minutes, not miles over here)!! AND I TRIED AND LOVE SO MUCH OF THEIR FOODS ALREADY! I had read and heard about lots of it from people who had been to them. I was so excited to go and my expectations were exceeded. I have not tried everything yet. It's been a little over a week...
  21. I agree with ryebaby. Your expectations were not met. It seems that's really hard on you. As a teacher, I have no input on lots of food/snack stuff at our school. You say the teacher works with you and this is your first issue. Did you expect to go from kinder through grade 12 with no issues arising? Unrealistic expectations can be a great stress...
  22. I've been to Famous Dave's a couple of times because it's one of the only places my family could agree on when I would fly back to the midwest to visit. I liked the food but I didn't like the dining experience either time. The person who takes your order is not the one who brings out the food--which in my informal tally is the major predictor of failure...
  23. We can't have Smirnoff Ice, due to malt flavoring. In fact we can only have certain flavors of Smirnoff at all. We can have alcoholic ciders like Woodchuck. I often drink Jack N Coke, and Tequila drinks when I am out. I have not had cc. I watch them when they make my drink and if it looked like they were dipping stuff into beer or anything, I wouldn...
  24. My doc said I had lactose intolerance. I always said I had whatever my (estranged) dad had, due to his constant drinking of anti-d medicine- and when he was diagnosed with a "wheat" allergy by a new back doctor (we both have severe back pain- we always thought his was from being a trucker or from being overweight--and I was neither). I told my doctor about...
  25. Las Vegas was a blast! Planet Hollywood Hotel (across from Bellagio, formerly Aladdin) was really modern, energetic, and cool! I only picked it because it was on a deal website and had good user reviews. We hated the Mandalay Bay the last time we stayed there in October (dirty room at checkin-like ppl had just left-had to get a new one-which almost made...
