  1. "Huh? Since when are turtles a salmonella threat?" From the CDC: Did you know that turtles can carry a harmful germ called Salmonella? Turtles' slow movements and tough, colorful shells may make them seem like the perfect family pet. However, if there are infants or small children in your home, turtles might not be safe pets for your family. Salmonellosis...
  2. Years ago CSA warned people that baking powder and baking soda could have gluten. I've never seen anybody post an actual brand that does have gluten. richard
  3. HIGHLY unlikely. Probably impossible. richard
  4. You cannot. richard
  5. Touching gluten alone is not a problem, but getting it on your body and eventually into your mouth can be. Washing thoroughly should take care of that. You can also breathe in flour dust, which will then take it down to where you would swallow it. A mask would take care of that. Still, it's best to avoid it when you can. richard
  6. Disclaimer for certain people, but I know of no pine nuts that have gluten added. Doesn't mean there couldn't be CC somewhere, either with the pine nuts or something else, but in my experience -- and this does NOT include every single possibility -- pine nuts should be gluten-free. richard
  7. Wanted to send this privately but couldn't. I'm kegler14 in that thread. You're absolutely right there and he appears to be a moron. I know we sometimes disagree and sometimes might even be somewhat rude to each other (at least I have been), but, well, we each have very strong opinions on certain subjects. I'm trying to tame my tongue. richard
  8. I would also keep an eye out for the list, but in the U.S., if it doesn't list wheat or malt, it's almost certainly gluten-free. It definitely won't have hidden rye. None of that is any guarantee about possible CC. richard
  9. Without checking responses, and I'm talking just gluten-free canned tuna vienna sausages canned salmon Might try a good cooler with ice and other stuff. richard
  10. Ron obviously hasn't slightest idea what he's talking about. Sad. richard
  11. Maltodextrin in food in the U.S. is EXTREMELY easy. No matter where the food or maltodextrin is made, if it contains wheat it MUST by law list it. Again, it does not matter in the least where the product is made, wheat has to be listed. I've seen it a few times but it's fairly rare in the U.S. richard
  12. "Th cheese thing is quite common, some grated cheeses bought in supermarkets do the same." It is? Please tell us where you've found wheat in cheese. Since it's "quite common" I'm sure you can reel off a whole list. (cue the crickets). "Wow, its good to know that someone has visited every resto in the US and checked." Every one I've ever checked on...
  13. You can take your own food, but you could also ask the coordinator for the name and number of the caterer. richard
  14. I'm truly curious as to what this has to do with the discussion about expensive labeling for "regular" food. Requiring various different labels for different products would indeed raise the cost for everybody, particularly since the only way to properly apply those labels would be to test every batch of product. And I'm not sure it would even do us much good...
  15. Honestly, there's no problem at any decent restaurant with a real live chef. Talk to the folks there. Emeril's is definitely gluten-free aware. As are many other places in NO. richard
  16. That will also cost a TON of money. Food prices will go up for everybody, not just for people with celiac. richard
  17. Raw meat is extremely easy. If a manufacturer adds anything with any grain in it, that grain must by USDA law be clearly listed. All you have to do is read the ingredients. richard
  18. gfp, I DID go to the Captain Morgan's homepage (NOT Diego) and they did not list a white rum there. I did misread the Parrot Bay ingredients, mistaking "flavors" for "spices." So I in fact did go look this up before I posted. I have always said that I believe that distilled alcohol WITHOUT gluten added after distilling is gluten-free. I do not claim...
  19. "I worded things badly..." Understatement of the century. richard
  20. "I certainly didn't set out to upset Cynthia but I think these are relevant questions for the GIG." I see. So you don't think people shouldn't get upset when they're called a liar and a sellout. And when you opine that you have a bush in your yard that has done more good for celiacs than the person you're talking about. You sure have a funny way of...
  21. ALL Capt. Morgan rum is spiced. richard
  22. One poster name -- gfp. richard
  23. Cynthia, Pretty much everybody on this board completely disagrees with gfp and in fact thinks his comments on this thread are just about as idiotic and baseless as can be. There apparently are a few who might agree with him, but the rest of us respect you and all you've done. Gfp, on the other hand, has done little more than sow dissension based on nothing...
  24. My parents fled Thibodaux, La., which was in or close to the eye, to Memphis, Tenn. Thanks goodness the winds slowed, but it will probably be the end of the week before they can return and find out about their house. richard
  25. It's my understanding that DH an take months and months to clear even if you are gluten-free because you still have Iga deposits under the skin. Iodine can also trigger attacks until you clear up completely. richard
