  1. I don't know what shrimp is fed, but anything fed grain is still safe for celiacs to eat. richard
  2. If you haven't seen a doctor about this please do so. richard
  3. Everything I've heard says they are. This is the biggest positive from my illness caused by celiac -- I was in the hospital for 11 days and was so sick I didn't feel like smoking for three weeks. By that time I was over any physical addiction and I simply never started again. That was almost seven years ago. richard
  4. In the U.S. the USDA requires that anything with nutritional value added to meat be clearly listed. This includes ALL grains. If it doesn't list wheat, rye or barley, it's gluten-free. richard
  5. " Go back and read my post again, I never said the flu virus was made from viruses from the year before in the United State. Please do not put words in my mouth, I said no such thing!" I reread your original statement and there's just no question whatsoever that it could be read as if the people who put together the vaccine simply use last year's strain...
  6. Honey is good stuff overall. richard
  7. I don't know of any plain salts that aren't gluten-free. richard
  8. If you can go local to a place with a chef who knows exactly what's in the food. I wouldn't trust any of the chains you named. richard
  9. The USDA labeling law is for all raw meats. Buying raw, fresh (and frozen) meat is very easy. richard
  10. If she hasn't done so already, your friend should also consider taking probiotics. It could be bacterial overgrowth. richard
  11. The dip sounds like it would be gluten-free but there's no way to tell unless you ask or see all the ingredients. If the restaurant fried the chips, they might have been fried in contaminated oil. Restaurants do not add flour to chips to keep them from sticking. Also, with the shredded cheese, using flour to prevent clumping is now pretty much a...
  12. I'm no expert, but it's my understanding that schools have to make accommodations, but that doesn't necessarily mean providing a gluten-free lunch. It can mean providing refrigerator space or a microwave for food your child brings. richard
  13. In the U.S., any grain added to meat MUST by USDA law be listed. Just read the label. Ground beef and turkey almost never have "filler" added. richard
  14. The vast majority of gums are gluten-free, even if they list natural flavors. richard
  15. OK, I should have specified that my post is for the U.S. In the U.S., the only hotdog I've EVER found with gluten is Nathan's. So yes, if you found 4 brands of hotdogs in Canada with wheat, that's peculiar to Canada. richard
  16. "PS...someone told me recently that a Celiac friend of her's still had cheesecake and just didn't eat the crust. That doesn't seem safe to me...is it?" Nope. Bad idea. With the fish, I think it is possible to rinse thoroughly enough but definitely a personal decision. There's no way to rinse off things like pie crust or croutons. richard
  17. The Internet is a great thing overall but one of the problems is that old or wrong information hangs around for a long, long time. There are many, many ingredients that either used to have hidden gluten or that somebody (too many times the CSA) thought might be a danger that we now know are either safe or will have wheat clearly listed if not safe. It can...
  18. "Some of the artificial sweetners are not gluten safe " I'm not aware of any artificial sweeteners that have gluten. Can you please tell us which ones you know of that aren't gluten-free? richard
  19. The USDA requires that any meat additive with nutritional value be clearly listed. This includes ANY grain, so all you have to do is read the label. I definitely prefer wild caught, though.
  20. "Most hot dogs DO have gluten but you would have to check the ingredients on each particular brand." This simply is NOT true. Nathan's is the only hotdog I've ever found that contains gluten, and it's clearly listed. If anybody knows of another brand, please list it. The corndog problem was almost certainly the covering and very unlikely to have been...
  21. Grain-fed meat does NOT contain gluten. richard
  22. Depending on the person it can take days, weeks or months. It took 2-3 weeks before I felt a noticeable difference. It was 10 months before I regained full strength. richard
  23. Really, virtually all breakfast sausages are gluten-free. I grew up thinking manufacturers always put bread filler is sausage, hot dogs, hamburger patties, etc. Turns out it isn't true. richard
  24. I can't remember what I had at our Abuelo's (in Virginia), but the manager was extremely helpful. The choices are somewhat limited but I think they adjusted some things. I had a good meal. richard
