Do You Take Tylenol (Extra Strength)?

I was wondering how many people here can take Tylenol Extra Strength with luck, and how many cannot take it.  My stomach is not doing well.  It's been that big, hard bloated issue, and some stomach ache on and off the past few days.  Only things I can think of that were different the past few days was I did have some apple cider, and I've also been taking Tylenol all weekend.  So I just went and looked Tylenol up and it says - 
"
Although we don't add gluten or gluten containing grains to our products, we cannot confirm that the product or any ingredients in TYLENOL® products are gluten free"

So I have no idea if that is what is causing my issues.  It is so crazy.   I had started to get stomach relief about a month ago, finally, but then it seems I keep making mistakes lately and getting uncomfortable stomach symptoms.  It is getting confusing.  I kind of hope it is the Tylenol because it really doesn't help me much anyway so I don't have a problem if I can no longer take it, and at least if that is it, I will know, and symptoms should go away soon.  I haven't taken Tylenol in quite a long while, but I was just so miserable this weekend (body aches and inflammation), I thought it couldn't hurt any.  Um, maybe I was wrong, lol!  

Anyone here have good luck with it?  Or can't take it?

I rarely take Ibuprofen these days, as it does absolutely nothing for my back pain :(

I have always preferred Advil over Tylenol. Tylenol works for me on most things but I find it isn't as effective as Advil is and Advil seems to cover the entire spectrum of ailments one takes an NSAID for. Tylenol has always tended to upset my tummy also. Seems I can take a few & be fine but any more than that in a day or a week & my tummy starts getting upset. I don't think there's any gluten in it. The statement the OP quoted is a cya statement b/c they don't test their product, it doesn't mean there IS gluten in the product.

I found that I am highly allergic to acetaminophen this past winter.  Had an anaphylactic reaction.  I knew that I was allergic to aspirin and ibuprofen for years.  I had a tooth extracted so I prepared in advance.  I called and got the same response  from the maker, Johnson and Johnson.  Really?  This company is making a bundle and they are famous for baby products of all things.  So, I boycott them.  

I purchased a gluten free acetaminophen, but I reacted anyway.  So, I had to deal with the flu (fever for days) and a tooth extraction without drugs (I did not react to the meds in my dentist’s office).  

That said,  look to the severe side effects of Tylenol.  Steven Johnson Syndrome is rare, but horrible. Liver damage is common.  Who needs that with a damaged gut?  So, if you are going to use it, make sure you follow the dosage recommendations.  It may be over the counter, but it is still a drug.

McNeal is owned by Johnson and Johnson.  I tell you it is all about the money.  Read the history of acetaminophen.  It was all a marketing scam.  Really.  

Gluten?  CYA statements?  I would not trust them.  They were sued successfully and fined in 2015 for metal in their Liquid products (Tylenol, Benadryl, and MOTRIN,  (you know, the ones our infant and toddlers take).   So do you think they would be careful about gluten?

Hi Lily,

I take generic acetaminophen, gluten free, from Costco.  I don't take it often, but occasionally I get a headache that needs it.

I have a hard, bloating, pain issue the last week too...so you're not alone.  I've tried 3 things to try to lower my cholesterol: fish oil supplement, plant sterol margarine and coconut creamer.  I'm assuming it's one of them.  So, I've stopped all of them.  I'm hoping this helps as I am completely over it.

I hope yours gets resolved and that you feel better!

Thanks for the replies.  

I am allergic to ibuprofen (hives).  I used to take aspirin, but have stopped since having tummy troubles because I've heard it's harsh on the stomach.  I used to be able to take Tylenol, but it just never helped much, so I rarely took it.  I am hoping that is what has caused my stomach issues the past  few days.  But I am not sure it is.  Which puts me at a loss as to what is up.  A week ago I think it was the pasta I tried that was made of brown rice and rice brain.  Still seems weird rice would cause a problem but I did see a website saying the white rice is usually okay, but some people don't deal well with the brown rice and the rice bran.  But now what is causing my issues?  It is frustrating because my stomach was starting to feel better.  I thought I was really figuring it out. 

Anyway, regardless, I am not going to take Tylenol anymore after reading this stuff.  Who needs it.  It didn't really do much anyway.   Who needs to risk all those side effects.  We all have enough trouble to work around.

WOW!!!!! I never knew about these things. Once Advil came on the market & I tried it, I hardly ever used Tylenol again. I always figured the Tylenol was just hard on my stomach.

All drugs, including over-the-counter, can have serious side effects (I am not talking about gluten exposures).  Each individual must decide (with a doctor’s input) what is best for them.  I think we have become a little too careless and dependent on easy access drugs.    Some have been around forever (like aspirin) but that does not make them safe.  I take antihistamines.  Safe?  Who knows?   But living with hives can be unbearable.  I am willing to take the risk!  

Just be careful and follow the instructions on the bottle.  

@LilyR  Look for the cause if your symptoms.  Sounds like you might be getting some gluten into your diet.  When that happens to me, I make a good homemade stew or soup.  I eat it morning, noon and night.  You should  eat anything that is easy to digest.  For example, cooked fruits and veggies vs. raw.  Salad can be hard to digest when your small intestine is inflamed.  Avoid processed foods.  Sure they are gluten free, but you might have an intolerance to a preservative or additive.  Gradually, go back to the regular gluten free diet when you feel better.

I was thinking about it this morning and I was thinking it does almost seem like I somehow had some gluten.  I just can't think from what though.  But I lost 2 pounds the past few days and that is what seems to happen when I get glutened - I ge the bad stomach issues, but also lose a few pounds quickly.  When I react to other things, like possibly corn, I don't get nearly as severe in the stomach issues, and I also don't lose any weight. 

That is a great idea to make a soup and just have that for a few days.  I was going to try and make things that on my food journal were all around some days I was feeling better, but soup sounds good.  Do you have any that seem more gentle on your stomach?   I am thinking maybe just a veggie one with carrots, potatoes, green beans, spinach or kale. I do usually add a small can of tomato sauce, but maybe this time I better not.  Or a homemade chicken soup with some rice maybe.

I think a chicken soup would be more soothing.  When my gut feels like this, too many veggies can make it feel even worse.  In this spot, I usually put chicken breasts in the crockpot with broth and cook it all day.  If things are really bad, I will just eat the chicken with a boiled potato...every meal.  Boring, but so gentle for my gut.  If things are starting to settle, I will add well cooked veggies...carrots, green beans, etc.  I also will eat bananas as I do really well with them and drink ginger tea or peppermint tea.  I hope things start to settle down for you. ?

      Thank you so very much Scott.  Just having someone understand my situation is so very helpful.  If I have one more family member ask me how my little itchy skin thing is going and can't you just take a pill and it will go away and just a little bit of gluten can't hurt you!!!! I think I will scream!!
