Woo Hoo Woo Hoo Hoo!!!

I am so happy happy happy, and I knew y'all would appreciate my feeling. I just came from the local Kroger; AND I was just told that they are about to greatly expand the gluten-free section!!! The gluten-free foods they stock has already grown rapidly even just since I was diagnosed a couple of mos ago. Let me say it again....Woo hoo woo hoo hoo!

In their "natural foods" dept they have lots of gluten-free....Bob's Red Mill, Pamela's, Amy's, Annies, etc. and they're expanding?!?! The dept mgr said they can't keep it stocked and will be adding more inventory of what they carry but will also be expanding the variety.

No kidding! My Kroger doesn't carry any gluten-free food! I think they could take some tips from that Kroger! :P

Oh mines somewhat good, meaning hte 3 or 4 items we buy regularly they have, and they have some of the more popular flours. Maybe 6 feet totla of gluten-free stuff on 1/2 hieght shevling.

This just inspired me to write a letter to Krogers! Our store is pretty small, but I don't know why they couldn't at least carry rice flour and some gluten-free crackers or something! :D I'll let you know if it does any good to complain about it :P

I got a response back this morning! I just went to Kroger.com and wrote an e-mail to the corporate offices. Here is what I wrote:

To whom it may concern,

I have a condition called Celiac disease that affects one out of every 133 people in the United States. It is an auto-immune disorder that can only be controlled by a very strict life-long gluten-free diet. There are

very few processed and pre-packaged foods that I am allowed to eat. It is difficult to prepare my daily meals, but not impossible. However, having a few gluten-free staples available makes it much easier. I know that some of your stores offer gluten-free items, but as of this point the Kroger in Effingham, Il does not. Is there any possibility that they will start carrying these items as well? Is there anyting I can do to bring this need to the attention of the buyers for this particular market? Thank you for your time.

I used to work at a grocery store. For a chain to make a 1% profit, all the stores in that chain have to make a 3% profit because of the high overhead and it's a labor intensive industry. You would think that with slim profit margins, stores would love to expand their gluten-free section, because that is a niche that has been growing at 19% or more each year as opposed to other sections that have a more or less flat growth. I haven't read a grocery industry mag for years, but I'm sure any time a store can expand just in one area and have a built in set of buyers, they would go for it. After all, there is always a sugar free, diabetic section in each store. We just the same, only not as well known or organized yet.

My grocery store (Basha's in Gold Canyon) just revamped their health food section. They even added a freezer section. They are now carrying more items and I was able to pick up a few gluten-free things from the freezer. I am going to have to go over my Wholefood's list before I go there and see what I can now buy at my grocery store. It is important that I buy as much as I can at my store. The more that is sold there, the more they will stock.

I agree with you. Even if I'm at Whole Foods, I won't buy something that I can get at my regular market -- I want to give my regular market as much encouragement as possible!

Sorry I posted and vanished....a mini-icestorm here in the Mid-South knocked out my internet for awhile.

I am fortunate, I have been to Kroger in nearby towns and either they have no gluten-free or the 6ft 1/2 high section that Vincent talked about. Our Kroger (small town) has shelves and shelves and freezer rows of the items I mentioned earlier in the "Natural Foods" dept.

You may be able to help yourself with this. Here's what I mean....

The Natural Foods Dept. Mgr at our store said he would be glad to try to get in specific foods that I want, but that even more effective would be for me to call 1.800.KROGERS (with an S). He said that if a customer requests an item in a specific store that they bend over backwards to get that item for them. He said otherwise, sometimes when a dept mgr requests an item, sometimes they're able to get it, but not always. Anyway, he was very nice and took my information. He said he would do his best. He said that if Kroger could get my request into that market, he was certain it would happen between his request and my phone call. This guy was even familiar with gluten free needs!!! He said, "And now it's not just wheat, right? You can't have rye, and barley, and isn't there something else?" I almost fainted in the aisle!" Obviously others had been talking to him, but he had obviously been listening!

So, I'm working on a list of what I want: specific pamela's mixes, Lundgren Farm's Drink Rice, etc. (Our store carries some Lundgren Farms and some Pamela's but looking for other products by these companies, etc.)

Heck, while I'm at it, I'm going to attempt Kinnikinnick. Don't know if they can, but we'll see.

One thing that has obviously helped me is that while I live in a small town (pop 10,000) the University of Mississippi (Go Rebels!) is located here and adds another 10,000. We're not your typical small MS town. The dept. mgr said he has one other Celiac buying from him that he knows of, but also some clientele that believes a gluten-free diet is healthier for them.

OH MY GOSH!!! As I am typing this, WREG the Memphis tv station on which I'm watching news just did a blurb on the McD FF wheat/dairy fiasco!! According to the reporter suits have been filed in 3 states. PLEASE, PLEASE dont' quote me on which states, the volume was kinda low, but I think she said MN, IL, and FL. This belongs in another post. Let's not confuse Kroger and McD ;)

Regarding the McD "OH MY GOSH" paragraph. Thought that was new news (since I've been internet-less for a bit). I see it's already been discussed in other threads. I agree with other postings. I hope these suits don't back-fire on us all.

Amazingly:

Nadia Sugich of Los Angeles sued Wednesday, saying she eats no animal products and would not have eaten the fries had she known they contained dairy ingredients.

No animal products, huh? What part of "contains beef" didn't she understand? That statement has been in the French fry ingredient list for years, at least since 2001. If the report is accurate, that one is going nowhere.

Sad news for all of us.

Just an update....I went into our Krogers yesterday and talked to the manager about carrying gluten-free products in the future. She was REALLY nice and so helpful it actually caught me off-guard! She said that someone else had been in the last few weeks and asked her the same question! Then she asked me what I wanted for them to carry and took down a list of products and brand names that I liked! She said she would call her supplier and see and then would give me a call to let me know what he said! While I was there, three of the cashiers came over and joined the conversation. One of the cashier's brother-in-laws has Celiac disease and was really curious about celiac disease in general and thought it was a great idea to start carrying gluten-free products! I'm so excited about this! I wish I had known she was going to ask me about specific products! I keep thinking about new things I should have mentioned :P

Great news about Kroger! Recently, I e-mailed Acme about a product's gluten-free status. A few days later, I got a call from a co rep. who answered my question and then told me he was a fellow Celiac! We chatted a few minutes--he's from the Philadelphia area, so he was not too far from me. I told him I was so happy that the small Acme in my town has begun carrying some gluten-free foods. He told me that this was just the beginning--that they will be expanding their gluten-free area. So Acme shoppers take heart, too :D

Alright I finally made my call to 1.800.KROGERS I had to work my way through a number of automated menus to finally get a real person, but it wasn't too terribly bad. AND, the customer service rep was familiar with Celiac (ok, so how many of y'all have called????). She confirmed the addition of a new set of gluten-free foods in our store, and said that she'd make the push from corporate to get the foods I requested in our local store.

I'll let you know!

      Raising you vitamin D will increase absorption of calcium automatically without supplementation of calcium.  A high PTH can be caused by low D causing poor calcium absorption; not insuffient calcium intake.  With low D your body is not absorbing calcium from your food so it steals it from your bones.  Heart has priority over bone. I've been taking 10,000 IU D3 a day since 2015.  My doctor says to continue. To fix my lactose intolerance, lots of lactobacillus from yogurts, and brine fermented pickles and saurkraut and olives.  We lose much of our ability to make lactase endogenosly with maturity but a healthy colony of lactobacillus in our gut excretes lactase in exchange for room and board. The milk protein in grass fed milk does not bother me. It tastes like the milk I grew up on.  If I drink commercial milk I get heartburn at night. Some experts estimate that 90% of us do not eat Adequite Intake of choline.  Beef and eggs are the principle source. Iodine deficiency is a growing concern.  I take 600 mcg a day of Liquid Iodine.  It and NAC have accelerated my healing all over.  Virtually blind in my right eye after starting antihypertensive medication and vision is slowly coming back.  I had to cut out starches because they drove my glucose up into the 200+ range.  I replaced them with Red Bull for the glucose intake with the vitamins, minerals and Taurine needed to process through the mitochodria Krebs Cycle to create ATP.  Went from A1c 13 down to 7.9.  Work in progress. Also take B1,B2,B3,B5,B6. Liquid Iodine, Phosphatidyl Choline, Q10, Selenium, D and DHEA.     Choline supplemented as phosphatidylcholine decreases fasting and postmethionine-loading plasma homocysteine concentrations in healthy men +

      @catnapt, Wheat germ has very little gluten in it.  Gluten is  the carbohydrate storage protein, what the flour is made from, the fluffy part.  Just like with beans, there's the baby plant that will germinate  ("germ"-inate) if sprouted, and the bean part is the carbohydrate storage protein.   Wheat germ is the baby plant inside a kernel of wheat, and bran is the protective covering of the kernel.   Little to no gluten there.   Large amounts of lectins are in wheat germ and can cause digestive upsets, but not enough Gluten to provoke antibody production in the small intestines. Luckily you still have time to do a proper gluten challenge (10 grams of gluten per day for a minimum of two weeks) before your next appointment when you can be retested.

      Hello, @asaT, I'm curious to know whether you are taking other B vitamins like Thiamine B1 and Niacin B3.  Malabsorption in Celiac disease affects all the water soluble B vitamins and Vitamin C.  Thiamine and Niacin are required to produce energy for all the homocysteine lowering reactions provided by Folate, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine.   Weight gain with a voracious appetite is something I experienced while malnourished.  It's symptomatic of Thiamine B1 deficiency.   Conversely, some people with thiamine deficiency lose their appetite altogether, and suffer from anorexia.  At different periods on my lifelong journey, I suffered this, too.   When the body doesn't have sufficient thiamine to turn food, especially carbohydrates, into energy (for growth and repair), the body rations what little thiamine it has available, and turns the carbs into fat, and stores it mostly in the abdomen.  Consuming a high carbohydrate diet requires additional thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  Simple carbohydrates (sugar, white rice, etc.) don't contain thiamine, so the body easily depletes its stores of Thiamine processing the carbs into fat.  The digestive system communicates with the brain to keep eating in order to consume more thiamine and other nutrients it's not absorbing.   One can have a subclinical thiamine insufficiency for years.  A twenty percent increase in dietary thiamine causes an eighty percent increase in brain function, so the symptoms can wax and wane mysteriously.  Symptoms of Thiamine insufficiency include stunted growth, chronic fatigue, and Gastrointestinal Beriberi (diarrhea, abdominal pain), heart attack, Alzheimer's, stroke, and cancer.   Thiamine improves bone turnover.  Thiamine insufficiency can also affect the thyroid.  The thyroid is important in bone metabolism.  The thyroid also influences hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, and menopause.  Vitamin D, at optimal levels, can act as a hormone and can influence the thyroid, as well as being important to bone health, and regulating the immune system.  Vitamin A is important to bone health, too, and is necessary for intestinal health, as well.   I don't do dairy because I react to Casein, the protein in dairy that resembles gluten and causes a reaction the same as if I'd been exposed to gluten, including high tTg IgA.  I found adding mineral water containing calcium and other minerals helpful in increasing my calcium intake.   Malabsorption of Celiac affects all the vitamins and minerals.  I do hope you'll talk to your doctor and dietician about supplementing all eight B vitamins and the four fat soluble vitamins because they all work together interconnectedly.

      Hi Jane: You may want to try the D3 I now take. I have reactions to fillers and many additives. Sports Research, it is based in the USA and I have had no bad reactions with this brand. The D3 does have coconut oil but it is non GMO, it is Gluten free, Soy free, Soybean free and Safflower oil free.  I have a cupboard full of supplements that did not agree with me -  I just keep trying and have finally settled on Sports Research. I take NAKA Women's Multi full spectrum, and have not felt sick after taking 2 capsules per day -  it is a Canadian company. I buy both from Amazon. I wish you well in your searching, I know how discouraging it all is. Florence.

      highly unlikely  NOTHING and I mean NOTHING else has ever caused me these kinds of symptoms I have no problem with dates, they are a large part of my diet In fact, I eat a very high fiber, very high vegetable and bean diet and have for many years now. It's considered a whole foods plant based or plant forward diet (I do now eat some lean ground turkey but not much) I was off dairy for years but recently had to add back plain yogurt to meet calcium needs that I am not allowed to get from supplements (I have not had any problem with the yogurt)   I eat almost no processed foods. I don't eat out. almost everything I eat, I cook myself I am going to keep a food diary but to be honest, I already know that it's wheat products and also barley that are the problem, which is why I gradually stopped eating and buying them. When I was eating them, like back in early 2024, when I was in the middle of moving and ate out (always had bread or toast or rolls or a sub or pizza) I felt terrible but at that time was so busy and exhausted that I never stopped to think it was the food. Once I was in my new place, I continued to have bread from time to time and had such horrible joint pain that I was preparing for 2 total knee replacements as well as one hip! The surgery could not go forward as I was (and still am) actively losing calcium from my bones. That problem has yet to be properly diagnosed and treated   anyway over time I realized that I felt better when I stopped eating bread. Back at least 3 yrs ago I noticed that regular pasta made me sick so I switched to brown rice pasta and even though it costs a lot more, I really like it.   so gradually I just stopped buying and eating foods with gluten. I stopped getting raisin bran when I was constipated because it made me bloated and it didn't help the constipation any more (used to be a sure bet that it would in the past)   I made cookies and brownies using beans and rolled oats and dates and tahini and I LOVE them and have zero issues eating those I eat 1 or more cans of beans per day easily can eat a pound of broccoli - no problem! Brussels sprouts the same thing.   so yeh it's bread and related foods that are clearly the problem  there is zero doubt in my mind
