What Unusual Concoctions Do You Enjoy?

My FIL makes fried okra in cornmeal. It's not mushy or gooey like canned or steamed okra. I'm pretty sure he uses frozen. It's of the main things I look forward to at the holidays. That and my MIL's potato salad...

Hmm.... I've got some recipes to get.

Another one I thought of that my dad and his family used to do all the time was canned asparagus with mayo. My husband brought home a can of asparagus yesterday, having never had canned asparagus, and I made another convert out of him.

I just remembered something else I used to put on mashed potatoes - mustard! It's really not bad, although I don't do it too often anymore.

Okay - a concoction I can not have anymore.

Spinach with A1 sauce. It is AWESOME. But A1 is gluten. So no more.

I had this on hand, ironically:

Fake A-1

1/2 c. each: OJ and raisins

1/4 c. each: soy sauce and vinegar

2 tbsp. each: dijon, ketchup, chili sauce

1 tbsp. grated orange peel

Bring all to a boil, then boil and stir for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat, let it cool. Put in blender 'til smooth. Stays 3 months in fridge. I've yet to try it, but it sounds easy and tasty enough!

I am one of those people. :D I really don't know what okra is. I'm from a place where we think it's weird when people don't understand fish tacos :D:lol:

Well, there ya have it...I've not heard of fish tacos before. What kind of fish do you use? Is it like a beef taco with fish. I bet it would be really good with a side of fried okra

:D:lol::rolleyes::lol::D

Wait, I thought A-1 was okay. What makes it not okay?

Guest BERNESES

A1- does it have soy sauce in it? That might be the culprit.

Fried okra! Yummmmm!

I think my favorite thing of all time isn't that weird but some people thought so. It's Ben and Jerry's chubby hubby- vanilla ice cream with chocolate covered, peanut butter filled pretzels and fudge and peanut butter swirls. 26 g of fat per serving. YUMMMM! hershey's is actually coming out with a candy bar called Take Five that is essentially the candy bar version of Chubby Hubby. It's the best.

Actually- I'm thinking about making my own version. Hhaagen Daaz vanilla ice cream, Glutino gluten free pretzels, some fudge and peanut butter. I'll let you know how it goes if I do. Drooling!

LOL. Fish tacos aren't like your typical ground beef taco. They are much better :) It's usually something like grilled mahi mahi, or a beer battered fish (if you're a non-celiac eating at a place called Rubios). The fish is in a corn tortilla with stuff like shredded cabbage, fresh salsa, sometimes avocado. mmmm. add some fried okra and you'd have a pretty interesting culinary blend

A1 in the US is made by Kraft--read the label, no gluten on the label means no gluten in the product. My bottle at home is gluten-free. Ate it last night...

Thanks Jen! I almost panicked when I read the comment about A-1. I couldn't figure out how I had missed gluten on the label - guess I hadn't!

I don't know why I let you people draw out this kind of information!!?

mashed potatoes wrapped in lettuce

slice of ham wrapped around a dill pickle, chopped raw onions

pancakes with butter, sprinkle with sugar, roll it and it's a sugar baby

put peanut butter on a plate sprinkle with chocolate chips and nuke for a few seconds, till it's melted and gooey

I'm part Finnish, never had the lutefisk, but I have had smoked or canned fish more times than I can remember.

I once had potato chip cookies ( sounds really sick right?) They were made with Ruffles potato chips, from a recipe on the bag from the 60's (so I was told) They were the best cookie I ever had! If anyone has that recipe let me know. I will figure out how to convert it to gluten free.

Hey Mango04, that fish taco sounds really good. What else do I need to know if I want to make some? Yummmmmm!

Mommida, mashed potatoes wrapped in lettuce??? What a peculiar combination of texture. Seriously, how do you keep the mashed potatoes from squishing out when you bite into the lettuce. I mean lettuce takes a little force to bite through and mashed potatoes are so....mashed.

I have loved reading through these responses! LOL... and we've wondered at our digestive issues ;)

Cornbread with chopped bacon and shredded cheese added to batter or crushed pineapple added to batter. Put in muffin tins and eat for breakfast with coffee.

Hi, I bought Naked Nutrition Creatine. It lists itself as gluten free but is not certified. (It used to be, but they dropped it in the past year or two apparently.) I wrote the company and asked them what testing results they had for creatine and they sent me the attached, which says the test result for gluten is <0.025MCG. I'm used to seeing test results as ppm, so I'm not sure what <0.025MCG means. Can it be converted to ppm easily? I want to confirm that it is safe to use.

When I was still recovering my gastroenterologist suggested I bought lactofree product as I was very bloated.  So I bought some from the supermarket and from memory, I drank a nice big glass of milk - and it went right through me literally within an hour or so, if my memory serves correctly.  I came off dairy completely next and it worked like a charm, but started to reintroduce quite gradually it as I missed it! To this day, if I overdo dairy products, they work like a mild laxative.  I've never wanted to give up milk completely as I like it so much, and my mum had osteoporosis and it's an easy way of getting calcium.  But it doesn't really 'sit' well with me.   You may need to experiment a bit as when I was healing certain dairy products were worse than others - I could cope with one brand of Greek yoghurt, but I got extremely and painfully bloated with another brand of live British yoghurt.

i have been strictly gluten free for 7 months. this includes avoiding anything that may contain gluten and making sure surfaces and appliances are clean. i am 18 years old in australia and my tTG-IgA results were 69U/mL, pretty low compared to most people's, for reference. i feel the exact same as before. sure, i was pretty much asymptomatic/silent. the worst i'd get was occasionally bad stools and pitting of the nails/brittle hair since early childhood - and i was diagnosed with low iron and vitamin d which checks out due to easy bruising and such. but those symptoms have remained. maybe i'm jumping the gun, sure. i know it can take years to fully heal. but being over half a year in, i feel that i should be, y'know, healing. i'm nearly at my wits end and wondering if i should have a piece of bread or something to see how i go - to see if i possibly have refractory? my mental health is declining as i feel myself wanting to bang my head against a damn wall out of frustration every day. cravings haven't gotten better. look, i love the stuff i still can have, like salads and such. OH! i haven't lost any weight, which is mind boggling considering i eat very healthily now! i've always been on the chubbier side which is atypical of coeliac. i just don't know what's going on with me. i try to remain hopeful but i'm just so sad all the time. thanks for reading

@Charlie1946There is a PM (Personal Message) tool built into the forum website that allows you to send a private message to other forum users. Just hover over their name with your mouse cursor and the menu containing that tool will pop up. This is useful if you want to communicate with an individual without everyone else involved in the thread seeing it.  Are you realizing that in my PPI taper down recommendations in an earlier post above, I was responding not to your posts but to @Caligirl57? If you must use a PPI, I certainly would advise taking the lowest dose that is effective for you.

Hi everyone, I'm still trying to figure out how to each message individually. I saw one with some information on sebaceous hyperplasia but now I can't find it.
