Getting Sick Easier Since gluten-free

I have been doing the gluten-free diet for almost a year now. I have had accidental incidents with gluten (including McDonalds FF, which i still dont understand if they are gluten-free or not.... but anyway!). But since i've been on the diet and trying to control this illness i seem to get sick way easier! in the past year ive had about 3 colds, stomach flu, bronchitis, sinus infections. I always just have an overall sick feeling in my body. I get real weak, shakey, still have some reoccuring nausea. I do feel better since starting the diet. Not 100% better, but better. It's just these weird other things are happening that i never had before, when i wasnt gluten-free. These things are interfering with my everyday life. Has anyone else had anything similar happen?

Yes!!! I have been sicker this year then in my whole life! I have been gluten free for a year in the beginning of May. It is so frustrating. I don't understand it. I am starting to wonder what is wrong with me. I just got over having the flu. I was the only one in my family that didn't get a flu shot, but was the only one to get the flu in my house and I have three kids under six. I am sick more then they are and when I get a cold now, I get a cough for like a month. I have had some cold virus going on every month since October. The doctor says it is because I have kids, but the kids aren't even sick as much as me. I am at my whits end. I try and stay healthy and eat right, etc., but I don't know. I have had accidental gluttenings too and don't know if this has to do with it or what.

Maybe someone else will have some answers, but I can totally relate and I don't know what is causing it.

My experience has been quite different. In the 5.5 years that I have had celiac, I haven't gotten (NON CS) sick at all. Not a single cold, flu, cough, ache/pain, sneeze, sniffle or anything. I know I've been exposed because my wife gets colds alot. I had started a similar post to this about six weeks ago and there were a couple of other people who hadn't been sick either.

May I ask what you are doing to not get sick?? I want to know, because I am tired of being sick all the time.

Me too! Although I've only been gluten-free for 9 months. I did not get sick with a cold or virus at all this winter--even when someone else in the house had one. This was also the first Christmas season that I didn't get sick--I would always manage to catch something then. I'm not doing anything special--just eating gluten-free and taking a multivitamin every day.

I'm not doing anything. I don't take vitamins or have a very balanced diet. I'm a really busy grad student so I don't even have time to work out. In otherwords, I don't have a healthy life style. Maybe something developing celiac triggered a gene or something. I'm not really sure. I can't figure it out. My wife has had all sorts of things including strep throat and light mono. But I didn't get it. Good luck.

The only time I get sick is when being glutened. I find just the opposite, everyone at work has been sick many times over and I have not got the flu at all. Howevr, I do keep getting a reoccuring eye infection and everytime I go to the doctor it disappears. However if it is not gone this time when I see him then he can see it, he figures it could be shingles which Celiacs seem to be more susceptible than other people.

I was getting sick for a long while but the "Olay Energy Pack" vitamins...even says gluten-free on the box...seems to have helped a huge amount. Plus the "Culturelle" probiotics Patti got me on say they will help boost immune system. Maybe this things will help others too. Just to double check I called Culturelle (put out by my fave company ConAgra and you can get them at CVS) they are gluten free and won't interact with any medications.

Yes, but I know it's not the diet for me, because I've been on the diet for two and a half years, and it's just been the past six months or so of extreme unhealthiness - constant migraines and colds every three weeks or so. It's probably because we've moved out of state to a colder climate, started new jobs, and bought a house, but it sucks all the same. Having to drastically alter your idea of what you should be able to accomplish in a day/week/month and what you are/do... yeah. It sucks.

plantime Contributor

The germs and viruses have most likely mutated into something you have not built up immunity to, and that is why you are sick so much this year. Your body is building immunities now, and you will probably not be sick next year.

Tiffany, your moving to a new state means being exposed to a new set of germs, and your body needs time to acclimate. This would happen every time a new child came into day care with a different set of germs.

I feel like my body has been bashed into pieces and cant handle any germs at all. Im on week #4 of my sinus infection & bronchitis. I got my 3rd antibiotic today, and was sent for a chest x-ray. And i noticed i seem to get all the side effects from any medication i get prescribed. I feel like my body cant take much more of this... I have been taking vitamins, just in hopes that maybe in some point in time theyll make a difference!

Are you taking a probiotic with your antibiotics? Otherwise you're going to wipe out the good bacteria in your gut, and that will make you more suspectible to other bugs again.

Tiffany,

It may be just a phase for you. We had friends move here to TN from California and they were sick alot for like six months. I think it is getting used to the germs in your area.

THen for me, I don't know what my problem is, but I am hoping this will pass.

Rache--I just want to say that I hope you get some relief from all of this soon. I can remember when my boys were very young and it was all I could do to take care of them. When they napped, I rested. I know that's no way for a young person to live--I understand and I will keep a good thought for you :)

YES! I have many symptoms still and n/v/d still. It is very strange. I feel that I have more symptoms now then I did BEFORE I was diagnosed. Sometimes I wish I had my old body back.

I get real weak, shakey, still have some reoccuring nausea.

This part of it sounds like hypoglycemia to me. There is another thread on that right now. You might try eating every few hours and see if that makes you feel better. The best diet I have found for it is at www.glycemicindex.com. It seems like a lot of us with Celiac have hypoglycemia as well.

My other thought is, are you sure that you don't have any other food allergies/intolerances? If you don't feel 100% on the diet, you still may be eating things that don't agree with you. If your body is constantly dealing with bad food, it may stress your immune system and make you more susceptible to other illnesses. Just a thought. I am going through this right now. I think there are other things I can't eat and I'm trying hard to figure them out.

Hope you feel better soon

Now im even more worried. I had gone to the hospital for a chest x-ray b/c ive been sick for 4 weeks now. Thr nurse from my Dr office called and said that the x-ray came back fine, but she then said the Dr wanted to know if i was having any stomach pain. I said yes, actually lately i have had it worse than normal. And she said the Dr wanted me to go back yesterday ASAP for a stomach x-ray... Being that yesterday was Friday, im assuming i wont hear anything till Monday. I asked why she thought i needed one, but the nurse said she didnt know. I'm a little nervous as to why the Dr thought i would need an x-ray of my stomach... Guess i'll have to wait until Monday and see if i hear anything back!

jerseyangel Proficient

Oh Rache--try not to worry. I know it is hard not to. Quite possibly the doctor has an idea why you've been so sick--at least that way you'll know and can begin to get better. Please let me know what they say on Monday--still keeping those good thoughts coming your way :)

I encourage all of you to contact Biohealth Diagnostics....www.biohealthinfo.com You're suffering needlessly and they're experts in treat causes rather than symptoms. If you have sinus infections you should not be taking antibiotics, you sound be taking antifungals...98 percent of sinus infections are caused by fungus according to the Mayo Clinic... ALL people with celiac have underlying infections that need to be treated or total health can't be restored...

I had a very different experience - initially. I used to get 2-3 colds per year, and after going gluten-free, for a long time I never got sick at all. It was one of things that really proved to me that the diet was really helping. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case over the last four months or so - in that time, I have had a stomach virus 3 times, and 2 or 3 colds. However, we have a lot of circumstances that I think contribute - we just moved to a new state, we have a toddler in day care, my wife works in a hospital, and last, and I think probably most importantly, we have gone for a significant length of time (2+ years) with a ton of stress and no significant downtime. I think after having to burn the candle at both ends for a while, you start to lose your resistance. Something to think about anyway.

the dr office called me back today with my abdominal xray results. they said there was no blockages. but i have a lot of extra air moving around inside. i have definately been SO bloated lately. i feel like i could be popped with a pin. i swear nothing inside of me is moving. i eat food, and im not sure where it goes... i have felt horrible the last couple of days. im not sure why. right now i feel so sick, nauseated... yuck. this is horrible. i wish it could just be over :(

Rache,

I am sorry you are feeling so sick! Hopefully they can find some answers to your stomach problems. Do you have C or D still? Thinking of you and hoping you get some relief very soon. I take dramamine when I am nauseated and it seems to help me.

Rache--I have the same problems with gas. My GI, when I mentioned it to him, told me to take Phazyme--I find it helps. If you want to try it, keep in mind that the softgels are gluten-free. The fast acting ones are NOT. My gas can cause nausea, too--especially while eating for some reason. Feel better :)

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.

Hi, I was recently diagnosed with Celiac and dermatitis herpetiformis after years of suffering without answers. I lost my mind. I lost my job. I lost so much time. I lost Me. Conventional doctors are opulent come near me and the one who did sat across the room, misdiagnosed me, pumped me full of steroids which collapsed my entire hip for 6 months. So without answers I began my holistic journey. Fast forward a couple of years and still struggling with a mysterious whole body itchy, crawling “skin hell”, perfect teeth now deteriorating, thick hair now thinning rapidly and no more than a day or 2 at most relief….An acquaintance opened up a functional medicine practice. Cash only, I found a way. Within a month tests clearly showing my off the charts gluten allergy/sensitivity as well as the depletion of vital nutrients due to leaky gut and intestinal damage. dermatitis herpetiformis was more than likely what I was experiencing with my skin. I was happy. I thought this is easy, eat healthy Whole Foods, follow the diet restrictions and I finally get to heal and feel confident and like myself again very soon! 😔 Supplements are very pricey but I got them and began my healing. Which leads to the other major issue: not working, stay at home Mom of young kids, entirely financially dependent on my man of 7 plus years. He’s never been supportive of anything I’ve ever done or been thru. He controls everything. I’m not given much money ever at a time and when he does leave money it’s only enough to possibly get gas. His excuse is that I’ll spend it on other things. So my “allowance” is inconsistent and has conditions. He withholds money from me as punishment for anything he wants. Since being diagnosed, he’s gained a new control tactic to use as punishment. He now is in control of when I get to eat. He asked for proof of my diagnosis and diet bc he said I made it up just to be able to eat expensive organic foods. Then after I sent him my file from my doctor he then said she wasn’t a real doctor. 😡. I go days upon days starving, sometimes breaking down and eating things I shouldn’t bc I’m so sick then I pay horribly while he gets annoyed and angry bc I’m not keeping up with all the duties I’m supposed to be doing. His abuse turns full on when I’m down and it’s in these desperate times when I need his support and care the most that I’m punished with silence, being starved, ignored, belittled. He will create more of a mess just bc I’m unable to get up and clean so that when I am better, I’m so overwhelmed with chores to catch up that the stress causes me to go right back into a flare from hell and the cycle repeats. I’m punished for being sick. I’m belittled for starving and asking for healthy clean water. I’m purposely left out of his life. He won’t even tell me he’s going to the grocery or to get dinner bc he doesn’t want me to ask him for anything. I have no one. I have nothing. Im not better. My supplements ran out and I desperately need Vitamin D3 and a methylated B complex at the very minimal just to function….he stares at me blankly…no, a slight smirk, no words. He’s happiest when im miserable and I am miserable.  this is so long and im condensing as much as I can but this situation is so complicated and disgusting. And it’s currently my life. The “IT” girl, the healthy, beautiful, perfect skin, perfect teeth, thick and curly locks for days, creative and talented IT girl….now I won’t even leave this house bc Im ashamed of what this has dont to my body, my skin. Im disgusted. The stress is keeping me from healing and I think he knows that and that’s why he continues to keep me in that state. He doesn’t want me confident or successful. He doesn’t want me healed and healthy bc then how would he put the blame of all his problems on me? This journey has been hell and I’ve been in Hell before. I’ve been killed by an ex, I’ve been raped, robbed, held hostage, abused beyond nightmares but the cruelty I’ve experienced from him bc of this disease is the coldest I’ve ever experienced. I’ve wanted to give up. Starving and in tears, desperate…I found a local food pantry in our small town so I reached out just saying I had Celiac and was on hard times. This woman is blessing me daily with prepared gluten free meals, donations, educational info, people who know this disease and how they manage life and the blessings just keep coming. But it’s overwhelming and I feel like I don’t deserve it at all. He just glared and I know he’s going to sabotage it somehow. I don’t even know what to do anymore. I’m so broken and just want peace and healing.

@Colleen H   I am just curious,  when you were tested for coeliac disease, did the doctors find out if you had any deficiencies? Sometimes muscle pain can be caused by certain deficiencies, for example, magnesium, vitamin D, calcium, and potassium.   Might be worth looking into having some more tests.  Pins and needles can be neuropathy, again caused by deficiencies, such as iron and B12,  which can be reversed if these deficiencies are addressed. In the UK where I live we are usually only tested for iron, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies at diagnosis.   I was very iron anemic and supplementation made a big difference.  B12 was low normal, but in other countries the UK's low normal would be considered a deficiency.  My vitamin D was low normal, and I've been supplementing ever since (when I remember to take it!) My pins and needles definitely started to improve when my known deficiencies were addressed.  My nutritionist also gave me a broad spectrum supplement which really helped, because I suspect I wasn't just deficient in what I mention above but in many other vitamins and minerals.  But a word of warning, don't take iron unless blood tests reveal you actually need it, and if you are taking it your levels must be regularly monitored because too much can make you ill.  (And if you are currently taking iron, that might actually be making your stomach sore - it did mine, so my GP changed my iron supplementation to a gentler form, ferrous gluconate). Lastly, have you been trying to take anything to lessen the pain in your gut?  I get a sore stomach periodically, usually when I've had too much rich food, or when I have had to take an aspirin or certain antibiotics, or after glutening.  When this happens, I take for just a few days a small daily dose of OTC omeprazole.  I also follow a reflux or gastritis diet. There are lots online but the common denominators to these diets is you need to cut out caffeine, alcohol, rich, spicy, acidic food etc and eat small regularly spaced meals.   When I get a sore stomach, I also find it helpful to drink lots of water.  I also find hot water with a few slices of ginger very soothing to sip, or camomile tea.  A wedge pillow at night is good for reflux. Also,  best not to eat a meal 2-3 hours before going to bed. If the stomach pain is getting worse, though, it would be wise to see the doctor again. I hope some of this helps. Cristiana

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease a couple of years ago [ish]. I love my food and a variety of food, so it's been hard, as it is with everyone. I try and ensure everything I eat doesn't contain gluten, but occasionally I think something must have got through that has gluten in. Mainly I know because I have to dash to the loo, but recently I have noticed that I feel nauseous after possibly being glutened. I think the thing that I have got better at is knowing what to do when I feel wiped out after a gluten 'episode'. I drink loads of water, and have just started drinking peppermint tea. I also have rehydration powders to drink. I don't feel like eating much, but eventually feel like I need to eat. Gluten free flapjacks, or gluten free cereal, or a small gluten free kids meal are my go to. I am retired, so luckily I can rest, sometimes even going to bed when nothing else works. So I feel that I am getting better at knowing how to try and get back on track. I am also trying to stick to a simpler menu and eat mostly at home so that I can be more confident about what I am eating. THANKS TO THOSE WHO REPLIED ABOUT THE NAUSEA .
