Rachel,

If I didn't know better I'd ask what you've been drinking.

OK, so is it sleep or glasses? Or are you going to blame the moon? :P

I must be posting on the wrong thread...maybe this moon thing is getting to me.

Haha....the moon!!

:lol::lol:

I was gonna blame all the cookies I just ate but now I'm not so sure  ...the moon can do some crazy things...especially around here!!

I never made it to bed yet....I made cookies instead. :P

I think I'm just wanting my mom to get off the phone so maybe I can get another neck massage before bed.

I just haven't posted because there were deaths in the family due to a car accident, just trying to deal with everything.

S orry Floridian for your tragic loss. :( I too went through that when my mother was killed in a car accident, those unexpected losses really are hard to take. but we do not know God's plan for any of us.

Take care of yourself, it will take some time to recover but you might not recover completely. evie

Evie,

That must have been hard for you. I often wonder if my parents will be in accidents during travels. My mom and stepdad drive to various little resorts through Trendwest I think it is. My dad drives up here (to Washington) twice a year. He's 78 years old. I really feel for the children who lose their parents early in life. Anytime would be difficult but as a child, I can't even imagine. I didn't think about those things when I was younger. Children and teens think they are invincible and the possible loss of my parents when I was young never entered my mind.

Rachel,

I want some cookies...Oooohhhh I think hubby brought some more enjoy life cookies home last night. I might have to raid the cupboard. Bummer, my daughter just woke up. Can't raid the cupboard with her up or she'll want some too.

Hi everyone I'm back. Went to Las Vegas for a few days. Didn't win anything, and left plenty of money there, lol.

Think I got glutened or dairied Friday (but had the symptoms yesterday). The whole trip was great...had a slight stomach ache the first day, but not bad. Then yesterday I had D from the moment I woke up. It was pretty bad. I could tell as soon as I finished my lunch yesterday that it was going to come out the other end in a few minutes (and it did). The problem was something that I ate on Friday though, because I had D as soon as I woke up. So whatever I ate on Friday caused my digestive system to go into hypermode, lol. I was being pretty careful, eating mostly stuff I brought with me, but did eat at least one meal a day at a restaurant or buffet, and I tried to pick stuff that seemed safe like plain steamed rice and carved roast beef (that I watched them carve in front of me) and plain veggies. I did eat some sushi (only two small pieces each day) both on Thursday and Friday, THAT might have done it...it didn't look like it had soy sauce in it, but the crab may have been the culprit since I couldn't be sure it was real crab. And, now that I think of it, it may have had rice vinegar in it, which I'm not sure is safe. It was a stupid thing to eat, but I miss sushi, lol. I also had Starbucks every day but I watched them make my stuff to make sure they used soy milk (which only seems to bother me if I have too much in one day) instead of dairy--there was only one time that I couldn't see them make my drink and that was towards the beginning of my trip.

Yes BALANCE and clumsiness is definitely an issue with me when I have a reaction. I was way off balance yesterday and did crash into a few things. Felt light headed most of the day. I also couldn't think straight and had hard time making decisions. I also had a bad headache most of the later half of the day. My vision was also much blurrier. By mid afternoon I was soooo tired I could hardly keep myself upright...unfortunately we had to check out of our room at 11:00 so couldn't even lay down. I think I could have slept for a while had I been able to lay down.

ChelsE - thanks for the birthday wishes and the link.

I'm exhausted today, but I'll read the link and the Olive Oil thread tomorrow. :)

Rachel - glad you are having fun with your new friend! The one statement you made about not wanting to get hurt hit home with me. I've turned down invitations for the same reason and am just about in the same place with not wanting to have a relationship yet. I actually think cutting down on the stress was a good thing for your healing.

About the earring thing...I've been trying to wear them a little more lately. They still cause a little weeping, but not nearly as bad as before I went gluten/dairy free. I'm thinking the longer I am free of the stuff that I'm intolerant to, the better it might get, although I may never be able to wear them every day.

Las Vegas!! A fun place to go. More fun if you win some money though. I don't know if you know that P.F. Changs (a chinese food type restaurant) which has great food has 3 locations there. They have complete gluten free menus right down to the chocolate flourless cake for dessert. Future reference perhaps.

Also, just in case you haven't heard there is a new product out there called mindlinx by Pharmax that contains strains of probiotics known to degrade wheat and dairy exorphins. This does not give us a free ticket to eat i  but it seems to help keep things to a miniumum with accidentals.'

Just talked to my doc about it again today and they say there are more and more studies (most still in the clenches of doctors research and not as much online yet) that shows VERY Postitive results for gluten sensitivity etc.. My doctor said that if I wanted to I could probably get my hands on more of the research through our local university library. I have been on it for more than a week now and already feeling better in general.

Floridian, I am so sorry to hear of your loss, it is terrible to lose those we love and even more devastating when they are taken in such a way. You are in my prayers.

I have been thinking of you lately. I was in Pensacola once, actually a barrier island just over the bridge and had the most wonderful time. The friend I was visiting was from the south and she spoke reeeaaaal slow, we laughed so much. We ate the best shrimp in the whole world, steamed on top a bed of lemon grass fresh from the garden. The only down side to that is that I've never been able to enjoy them since I now know what they should taste like. :(

rinne; Thank you for answering me early in the am. I was in terrible stomach pain!! I really was tring to post to the board @ & at the time of am I could not figure it out! It is very possible the skin allergy testing for foods I turned out to be allergic to are what caused my problem. I went back to bed @ 4am with heat pad on tummy @ propped up, went to sleep. Drinking Pepsi now and burping for the first time. I guess I will survive!! :P Just that I had been spoiled by feeling so much better and not uswed to being wakened by HORRIBLE tummy pain & bloated. anyone have ideas..please pass them on . :)

Floridian, I'm so sorry for your loss. I have a slight idea of what you might be feeling and it really does suck! I lost my father, aunt and uncle in the same car crash 10 years ago in September...it was the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with...that happened in the same year I lost my grandmother and two other aunts. I had to go through some of my dad's papers the other day and it still brought tears to my eyes even after 10 years. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Calling Donna. :) Are you feeling better today?

Yes, thankfully, much better although the scatter-brainedness hasn't gone away yet, lol. Now, I'm just worried about my mother...haven't been able to reach her for 3 days. I'll drive by this afternoon after work just to make sure...I'm sure the phone just got turned off somehow.

I have an appointment today with my GI, at which I think we'll make the next endoscope appointment.

I took some info with me on the locations for Outback and PF Changs, but actually didn't see any of them (must admit I didn't look very hard)...we actually didn't leave the hotel much except for a couple of days. I'll have to ask my GI about that med...I see him in a little over an hour from now.

Hi everyone--I'm back! I spent a few days up in Syracuse visiting family and celebrating my parent's 55th anniversary and my husband's birthday (both on July 7th). I've been reading through all of the threads I missed (10 pages  ) and through this thread. Floridian--I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Donna, Sorry to hear about your family, too. Those things stay with us. Your story about being glutened on your trip sounds familiar--I was not feeling well the whole time I was away. I have no idea why--I was so careful! I began to feel queasy on the drive up and had a headache and was nauseous the whole time. Maybe I was just plain sick--or I worried myself that way in the days leading up to the trip. Who knows <_<

It was great to get back home, I don't really like traveling. :(

There were some really good discussions on here the past few days--Julie, Rachel, Andrea--I love reading all of your thoughts--I'll be jumping in as soon as I get my thoughts together.

AndreaB Contributor

Welcom back Patti. Sorry you didn't feel well on your trip. :(

I agree about being home. We want to plan an overnighter probably later this summer to drive down to Winston OR for the Noah's Ark exhibit and the wild life refuge as well as drive to Bandon to a wildlife park there. It's like a wildlife petting zoo. Lots of goats and deer run around and climb on you to get treats. Micah won't enjoy that very much...he's afraid of dogs. Have to have Mitch hold on to Seth since he's taller. We would then stop at Lincoln City or Cannon Beach although I like Long Beach up here in Washington also. The kids don't like long drives but maybe all the animals would make up for it.

Donna, I'm also sorry for your loss. Death stinks, it really does, and I don't cope with it very well, but especially something so sudden as a car accident when they are gone in the blink of an eye.....

I hope you connect with your mom and find all is ok.

Welcome back Patti :) I had to laugh when you said you missed 10 pages in just a few days. It doesn't seem possible. Hope you were able to have a great celebration with family even though you were not feeling well. I don't know what is going on but I have had stomach problems today, even "d" and I never get "d", so color me confused. It looks like I am going to have to go over my diet with a fine tooth comb again. It seems like the more you take out of the diet the touchier your body gets when you try to add something in. I hate that :( Of course maybe it is just a flu bug of some sort. I hope you feel better, Patti and Donna both.

Rachel, I'm glad you got to eat cookies. :) You are so restricted with what you can/can't eat, I always smile when I read a post that announces you're eating cookies.

Well, still can't reach my mom, but I AM back from Dr. R. I'm going to have another endoscope on Thursday so he can take another biopsy of my enlarged ampulla of vater (the opening in the intestine where the pancreatic and bile juices empty into the intestine.

He gave me the report that Stanford sent him which basically said that they think it's just inflamation. Dr. R thinks so too, but he wants to do another biopsy to be sure. He's been having me take ZantacOTC for the last two months to see if it changes the way the cells look with decreased inflamation.

If this biopsy shows the same thing we'll probably just ignore it unless I'm feeling bad. If it is pre-cancerous I'll have to have it removed.

Stanford thinks my case is interesting, lol. The first line of their comment: "Thank you for sending us this interesting case in consultation." That's me, interesting case. When I had my hysterectomy, it was because of fibroids. My doctor said he had never seen anything like it and stopped counting at 20...he also said it was an interesting case.

Ampulla of vater, what a lovely name.

How fortunate for you to be so "interesting" Donna  At least you have lots of good minds looking over your case, maybe they can figure something out collectively?

I'm of the opinion that medically, it's better to be interesting. Dr's kind of blow through the boring cases

Julie,

I love your new picture! :D There is an interesting link on TCA's thread that Rhonda posted about sulfites if you want to check it out. Do you think it could be too many tortillas?

Anyone like the "little house" series on here? My daughter watched two episodes this morning and now is on another two. It keeps them quiet when the baby is sleeping and since he had his afternoon nap messed up yesterday I figured I'd stretch the TV time today. She's a very dominate personality...seems to almost always talk her brother into what she wants to watch.

S has seemed to have a very small flare up with his eczema. The only thing I can figure is the envelopes or the gluten roll I handled on Saturday, didn't wash my hands until I got home. I need to buy myself a envelope moistener or have my hubby take care of it. At least he doesn't have an active intolerance. Just licked another envelope today. :(

dlp252 Apprentice

Ha, yep, I guess I agree...the more interesting my case the more they are likely to look at it, lol. The doctor did say it was a high risk operation if I have to have it, so I know that is why he is being so cautious.

Mom is okay. Apparently some crews are working in the park and cut some cable lines last week...they must have cut some phone lines too. They didn't even know their phone didn't work until I showed up on their doorstep, lol. We're not a big phone family.

Julie - yep, the name is just lovely, lol. It's darned near impossible to do research on it o

AndreaB Contributor

That's a relief about your Mom Donna.

Hoping hubby gets home early so he can make pancakes...otherwise I might have to, or figure something else out. :(

I'll look at that thread, what category is it in? I only had the one tortilla, so I don't know...I seemd to be ok after it. I've been eating a little dairy here and there and I think I am going to have to eliminate it completely, not even for an ocasional indulgence :( Ever since I did my version of the gluten challenge I am so much more sensitive to dairy.

I never licked envelopes even when I ate gluten, I hated the taste. I usually take a paper towel and run a little water from the sink on it, wring it out and then rub it across the adhesive part on the envelope.

It's the Megan thread. I thing it's Megan's gagging isn't getting any better or something like that. It's almost always on the view new posts pages. Kids and babies section.

So, essentially all of the nutrition in the food we eat is absorbed through the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestinal track that is damaged by celiac disease. This villous lining is composed of billions of finger-like projections that create a huge amount of surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the celiac person, when gluten is consumed, it triggers an autoimmune reaction in this area which, of course, generates inflammation. The antibodies connected with this inflammation is what the celiac blood tests are designed to detect but this inflammation, over time, wears down the finger-like projections of the villous lining. Of course, when this proceeds for an extended period of time, greatly reduces the absorption efficiency of the villous lining and often results in many and various nutrient deficiency-related health issues. Classic examples would be osteoporosis and iron deficiency. But there are many more. Low D3 levels is a well-known celiac-caused nutritional deficiency. So is low B12. All the B vitamins in fact. Magnesium, zinc, etc.  Celiac disease can also cause liver inflammation. You mention elevated ALP levels. Elevated liver enzymes over a period of 13 years was what led to my celiac diagnosis. Within three months of going gluten free my liver enzymes normalized. I had elevated AST and ALT. The development of sensitivities to other food proteins is very common in the celiac population. Most common cross reactive foods are dairy and oats but eggs, soy and corn are also relatively common offenders. Lactose intolerance is also common in the celiac population because of damage to the SB lining.  Eggs when they are scrambled or fried give me a gut ache. But when I poach them, they do not. The steam and heat of poaching causes a hydrolysis process that alters the protein in the egg. They don't bother me in baked goods either so I assume the same process is at work. I bought a plastic poacher on Amazon to make poaching very easy. All this to say that many of the issues you describe could be caused by celiac disease.

thank you so much for your detailed and extremely helpful reply!! I can say with absolute certainty that the less gluten containing products I've eaten over the past several years, the better I've felt.   I wasn't avoiding gluten, I was avoiding refined grains (and most processed foods) as well as anything that made me feel bad when I ate it. It's the same reason I gave up dairy and eggs- they make me feel ill.  I do have a bit of a sugar addiction lol so a lot of times I wasn't sure if it was the refined grains that I was eating - or the sugar. So from time to time I might have a cookie or something but I've learned how to make wonderful cookies and golden brownies with BEANS!! and no refined sugar - I use date paste instead. Pizza made me so ill- but I thought it was probably the cheese. I gave up pizza and haven't missed it. the one time I tried a slice I felt so bad I knew I'd never touch it again. I stopped eating wheat pasta at least 3 yrs ago- just didn't feel well after eating it. I tried chick pea pasta and a few others and discovered I like the brown rice pasta. I still don't eat a lot of pasta but it's nice for a change when I want something easy. TBH over the years I've wondered sometimes if I might be gluten intolerant but really believed it was not possible for me to have celiac disease. NOW I need to know for sure- because I'm in the middle of a long process of trying to find out why I have a high parathyroid level (NOT the thyroid- but rather the 4 glands that control the calcium balance in your body) I have had a hard time getting my vit D level up, my serum calcium has run on the low side of normal for many years... and now I am losing calcium from my bones and excreting it in my urine (some sort of renal calcium leak) Also have a high ALP since 2014. And now rapidly worsening bone density.  I still do not have a firm diagnosis. Could be secondary HPT (but secondary to what? we need to know) It could be early primary HPT. I am spilling calcium in my urine but is that caused by the high parathyroid hormone or is it the reason my PTH is high>? there are multiple feedback loops for this condition.    so I will keep eating the bread and some wheat germ that does not seem to bother me too much (it hasn't got enough gluten to use just wheat germ)    but I'm curious- if you don't have a strong reaction to a product- like me and wheat germ- does that mean it's ok to eat or is it still causing harm even if you don't have any obvious symptoms? I guess what you are saying about silent celiac makes it likely that you can have no symptoms and still have the harm... but geez! you'd think they'd come up with a way to test for this that didn't require you to consume something that makes you sick! I worry about the complications I've been reading about- different kinds of cancers etc. also wondering- are there degrees of celiac disease?  is there any correlation between symptoms and the amnt of damage to your intestines? I also need a firm diagnosis because I have an identical twin sister ... so if I have celiac, she has it too- or at least the genetic make up for having it. I did have a VERY major stress to my body in 2014-2016 time frame .. lost 50lbs in a short period of time and had severe symptoms from acute protracted withdrawal off an SSRI drug (that I'd been given an unethically high dose of, by a dr who has since lost his license)  Going off the drug was a good thing and in many ways my health improved dramatically- just losing 50lbs was helpful but I also went  off almost a dozen different medications, totally changed my diet and have been doing pretty well except for the past 3-4 yrs when the symptoms related to the parathyroid issue cropped up. It is likely that I had low vit D for some time and that caused me a lot of symptoms. The endo now tells me that low vit D can be caused by celiac disease so I need to know for sure! thank you for all that great and useful information!!!

Welcome, @catnapt! The most recent guidelines are the daily consumption of a minimum of 10g of gluten (about the amount found in 4-6 slices of wheat bread) for a minimum of two weeks. But if possible stretching that out even more would enhance the chances of getting valid test results. These guidelines are for those who have been eating gluten free for a significant amount of time. It's called the "gluten challenge".  Yes, you can develop celiac disease at any stage of life. There is a genetic component but also a stress trigger that is needed to activate the celiac genes. About 30-40% of the general population possesses the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% of the general population actually develop celiac disease. For most with the potential, the triggering stress event doesn't happen. It can be many things but often it is a viral infection. Having said that, it is also the case that many, many people who eventually are diagnosed with celiac disease probably experienced the actual onset years before. Many celiacs are of the "silent" type, meaning that symptoms are largely missing or very minor and get overlooked until damage to the small bowel lining becomes advanced or they develop iron deficiency anemia or some other medical problem associated with celiac disease. Many, many are never diagnosed or are diagnosed later in life because they did not experience classic symptoms. And many physicians are only looking for classic symptoms. We now know that there are over 200 symptoms/medical problems associated with celiac disease but many docs are only looking for things like boating, gas, diarrhea. I certainly understand your concerns about not wanting to damage your body by taking on a gluten challenge. Your other option is to totally commit to gluten free eating and see if your symptoms improve. It can take two years or more for complete healing of the small bowel lining once going gluten free but usually people experience significant improvement well before then. If their is significant improvement in your symptoms when going seriously gluten free, then you likely have your answer. You would either have celiac disease or NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity).

after several years of issues with a para-gland issue, my endo has decided it's a good idea for me to be tested for celiac disease. I am 70 yrs old and stunned to learn that you can get celiac this late in life. I have just gradually stopped eating most foods that contain gluten over the past several years- they just make me feel ill- although I attributed it to other things like bread spiking blood sugar- or to the things I ate *with* the bread or crackers etc   I went to a party in Nov and ate a LOT of a vegan roast made with vital wheat gluten- as well as stuffing, rolls and pie crust... and OMG I was so sick! the pain, the bloating, the gas, the nausea... I didn't think it would ever end (but it did) and I was ready to go the ER but it finally subsided.   I mentioned this to my endo and now she wants me to be tested for celiac after 2 weeks of being on gluten foods. She has kind of flip flopped on how much gluten I should eat, telling me that if the symptoms are severe I can stop. I am eating 2-3 thin slices of bread per day (or english muffins) and wow- it does make me feel awful. But not as bad as when I ate that massive amnt of vital wheat gluten. so I will continue on if I have to... but what bothers me is - if it IS celiac, it seems stupid for lack of a better word, to intentionally cause more damage to my body... but I am also worried, on the other hand, that this is not a long enough challenge to make the blood work results valid.   can you give me any insight into this please?   thank you

The biopsy looks for damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel from the inflammation caused by celiac disease when gluten is ingested. Once you remove gluten from the diet, inflammation subsides and the mucosal lining begins to heal.
