Jersey - I think you are really on to something with the water theory! I understand that although Aquafina is very pure, it's just filtered tap water. People like the taste because it lacks important minerals found in spring water. I think Aquafina is made by Pepsi? Anyway, go for the spring water everyone! It can make a huge difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't even think the theroy is that far fetched when you think of all the junk found in some water. I think I'm going to go buy a big bottle of Voss! LOL

Great information Mango!

WATER UPDATE!

Ok. I called Jim (www.cleanairpurewater.com) and asked him about the carbon filters. They are coconut derived.

Patti,

He said his customers that used Poland water before his system prefer his system.

Vincent,

We paid $275 for a three stage Kitchen Defender which includes everything needed to install unless you need a different size connector. The filters need to be replaced every 1 1/2 years...I think they are $21 a piece but I forget, my be more. It's a very good system and he'll only sell you want you need and want. We opted to have fluoride removed (ours was incredibly high).

Jim's systems are very good and, I think, reasonably priced. You'll get excellent customer service and a genuine concern and interest in you and your water needs. If you factor in the cost of buying all bottled water for a year and a half you'd probably be spending just as much.

The troubled with distlled water is it does NOT remove colorine, so AFTER distilling it they run it through an ativated carbon filter to remove the chorline. Since its the activated carbon that I am midly suspecting, that does not help. Think I may just try tap water for a while, I can remove teh clorine the old fashioned way with out any filters.

NOt a good evening with my bro and the girls and the pot of spaghetti.... :( I am always trying to mend things with my family, damage I have caused all the years of my youth and into my thirties, I was the best auntie, but then, during manic and depression, I was awful, add to that my brother married a woman 26 years ago who doesn't remotely "get" me and in fact, she looks at me as if I AM AN ALIEN....long story I wont' go into now but no, I came home and sobbed from that debacle..... :(

The Valley Girls movie is in San Fernando Valley, southern California. We are in the San Joaquin Valley, and that combined with Salinas Valley (near Monterey and central coast) produces much of hte nation's food. Bloody stinking hot here.....but the San Joaquin valley, in the middle of the state, extends about, what, 200 miles? Rachel is in the north end, I am smack in the midle of the state. It's actually a desert here, but wtih the irrigation we steal (a very precarious state, BTW) from other sources, they made it into civilization.

Julie - - where to you live?

Oh, there are multiple Valleys  I guess I assumed there was only the Valley. BTW, I loved that movie Valley Girls, it was my first 'R' rated movie  Either that or Vacation, can't remember what came first?

So sorry last night didn't go so well with your family. I commend you for trying to mend fences. Give it time :)

Andrea,

I had an upset stomach all night, cramping, gas, etc. Woke up with d again. :(

Good thing is I think I figured out the cause. After my obgyn appt. Thurs. I went to whole foods and I bought some peanut butter. I dont ever eat nut butters but I dunno....I was craving it I guess. Maybe it was the alien baby inside me telling me to get it.

I ate some that night and woke up with the d and all the stomach problems I had yesterday.

I ate more last night and within an hour I was bloated again and burping. :(

I have the exact same stomach problems again. How stupid am I ??

I cant digest fats well at all...is peanut butter a fat? I'm thinking it is since its got all that oil in it.

Rachel,

Don't be too hard on yourself. I can very easily understand wanted to eat something else, especially when you have so little you can eat right now. Yes peanut butter is a fat. All nuts have good fat, but it's still fat and if you can't tolerate fats right now, best avoided.

I'm sorry you don't feel well again. :( I was hoping you'd have a nice, relaxing (I feel well) weekend.

Vincent,

Activated Carbon is used in a number of military applications including air scrubbing i.e. oxygen rebreathers and submarine air purifiers. I personally have never heard of reactions to it other than you do not want to breathe in the charcoal into your lungs.

Everyone else, enjoy the weekend. I am out of my office.

So I am getting in on this water challenge at the tail end. Are water purifiers that are attached to the sink tap not efficient enough? I have had a Multipure system for over 10 years. I've wanted to get the filters for the showers as well, but I keep forgetting about it.

What?? Why did I think you live in San Francisco, or somewhere right near there?

Susan,

I spend most of my time in the Bay Area cuz thats where I work, grew up, etc. Its where all my friends are.

I bought a house in Manteca almost 7 years ago so thats where I live. I love it there. I used to commute but now that I got sick and the gas prices are through the roof I just stay in the Bay all week and go home on the w/ends.

Picard, look up hopw activated charcole is made, its by adding an "organic compound" to the burnt wood. This compound can appearently be ANY oraganic materil, such as wheat. So it just depends on what the company that made the filter made there's from. Above some guy named "Jim" makes his filters from coconut, so his would not bother my son at least. If "Jim" used wheat, rye, barley...etc then it would.

Ass for not hearing aboutit in the military, since yournot allowed ot serve with celiac disease thats not realy a surprise. :)

Morning???? It is now early afternoon. As for the coven of people chantig, well it could be us hoping for positive results for Rachel.

Rachel, I hope you know I am only joking around about the movie references. Have you seen Rosemary's Baby (1968)? Oh heck, have you seen Alien (1979)?

Now, Rosemary's Baby was before my time, but I have seen it a few times. Very weird watching the devil come out of the coal miner's daughter. Alien, the first one is classic.

The alien baby thing cracks me up!!!:lol:

I wasnt really laughing when it was flashing through my mind at the doctors office though..

I never saw Rosemary's baby....I've heard of it though. I'm pretty sure I saw alien a long time ago...I dont really remember it.

Info on fat malabsorption:

"Some causes of Malabsorption-

Acutely abnormal intestinal lining due to an acute intestinal infection, overuse of antibiotics, alcohol

Abnormal intestine lining present in Crohns and Celiac

Unbalanced flora, bacterial overgrowth, parasites

Inadequate gastric mixing due to the presence of a fistula

Impaired transport of enzymes

Fat Malabsorption indicators include large volume stool and weight loss, fat globules are present in stool with microscopic examination (stool analysis).

With fat malabsorption the stools are greasy, soft but not liquid, foul smelling and bulky. Growth failure is a dominant feature, because the intestinal loss of high-energy fat nutrients (9 kcal/g of fat) leads to a profound deficiency in the total calories absorbed daily."

Julie,

I'm pretty sure its a fat thing. When I eat fatty foods alot of the time my stools are the bulky greasy kind...I'm talking huge piles of it. Exactly like you posted. Greasy and soft but not liquid. I dont usually have liquid stools except for yesterday and today. Maybe the peanut butter was just way too much for me right now. <_<

My Enterolab malabsorption results were almost to the severe level. My score was 912 with anything under 300 being normal. Anything over 1,000 would be severe malabsorption.

Patti,

I cant eat any nut butters. I tried almond butter, hazelnut butter, cashew butter...etc. I never feel good after but I never got all the burping and d from them. I havent had any in a long time and this time I got good ol peanut butter since all the other ones messed me up. All beans get me bloated. Peanuts are a bean right? Are beans harder to digest? <_<

Rachel--

From what I understand and from what Robb (on the "Introduction" thread) told me, people with autoimmune problems can be sensitive to legumes. Peanuts would be a legume as well as soybeans, green and wax beans, peas, chick peas, and all the rest of the regular beans. Beans can be hard to digest for anyone, but for us, the lectin component actually can make us intolerant.

Rachel--24 Collaborator
When you mention gas station bathrooms it made me think of all the broohaha about Britney Spears walking bare foot in and out of a gas station bathroom. First of all I would never go into one, and then to walk bare foot??

EEEEW....that just grosses me out. I can use a gas station bathroom if I have no other option but NEVER would I go in barefoot. GROSS

I dont eat any legumes anyway (except for the peanut butter I tried) so now thats all the more reason to stay away.

WE can only hope it's Sigourney's alien, because soon it will just jump righ out of her and leave her...(and in our version she won't die but will resurrect MAGICALLY due to her healthy diet and all of our support!)

YAY!!! And then I go on to live happily ever after. :D

Until the very end when you see that all of a sudden I get bloated again. and the spooky music is playing and then you just know there will be a part II.

Wow--I left for a while and had almost 3 pages to read! :D Andrea--thanks for the filter info. I also googled a little bit and saw that about the coconut. Problem with that is, I get sick from coconut! So that could be the reason. I'm gonna stick with the Poland Spring--at least for a while. It's very easy to find here in NJ--I picked some up at CVS, and my husband bought me a case at Sam's club so I'm set for a while. :D

Mango--I agree about the spring vs filtered, thanks :)

Walking into a gas station bathroom is gross enough--let alone BAREFOOT! E-w-w-w :o

Julie--When I realized that my filtered water (from a brand-new refrigerator w/ filter) may be adding to my stomach troubles, I decieded to try to go back to the spring water. I don't actually know if that's even the problem yet--I'll keep you posted.

Picard--Glad you only had to work 1/2 a day today! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! :)

Is this a whole house system, or just somthing at your sink?

The Kitchen Defender is just the kitchen sink. He sells a whole house unit for about $1200 I think. He says a lot of people start with the kitchen and will buy showerhead filters and save up the money for the whole house system.

Rachel--24 Collaborator

I've made several trips to the bathroom this morning. Theres always alot of oil floating on the water. Yesterday when I got off work I ate a bowl of creamy brown rice cereal. Thats about when I started to feel better and had a normal bm. I think I'll try that again. My mom says rice can be binding so maybe thats why my d stopped yesterday. Hopefully it works again cuz I got a lot of stuff I wanna do today and tomorrow. B)

Okay... everyone talked me into a water filter for the house, I was just going to buy bottled water but I was thinking about what Rachel said about washing off veggies and stuff.... yep, gonna have to get a house filter.

I want one too but I'm clueless about this stuff? Where do you get it...at the store? Does someone have to install it? Do I look in the yellow pages or what? Where do I get a good water filter? I'm good at installing stuff and building stuff but I dont know anything about water filters?

Boy that peanut butter must have done a number on your system Rachel. Do try the brown rice cream and hopefully that will help solidify things for you. Bananas are suppose to be binding as well. Can't remember if you can tolerate those or not?

Barefoot in a gas station bathroom.... OH DEAR GOD.... is there a smilie pukeing that I can add here?

Did I spell "pukeing" right??? Ya all know what I mean

I know what you mean Celia! Is there a name for the phobia of walking barefoot in gas station bathrooms??

I think most of the time my spelling is horrendous. When I am typing it out none of the words seem right or look right, so everyone I apologize if I appear to be a bad speller

I am a little slow on this one, I had to go back about 5 or so pages and read what you wrote about the water. I totally misunderstood, I thought you meant you were drinking plain tap water and thought maybe there was somthing making you sick from that. Now I am on the same page  You are suspecting the water filter and the carbon thing-a-ma-bob. Right? Well, this concerns me as well because my Multipure filter system is this exactly and I have been drinking this water for over 10 years!

I would just die if there is something to this :(

Rachel--24 Collaborator

Julie,

I just ate a banana thinking the same thing. I tested sensitive to them but I think eating one wont kill me.

Also, I've never seen anything wrong with your spelling. You're an excellent speller...in fact I think we all are. :D

Yay! I love it when people go off dairy for good!

www.godairyfree.com is pretty good

www.notmilk.com is another one. It looks a bit wacky at first glance but there are some good articles in there.

Sorry you're sick Rachel. I wish I had something more insightful to say

I keep thinking about the water thing and it makes so much sense. Just think about what toxic water would do to those of us with leaky gut (and I think a lot of water is toxic).

I don't know if this is well known already, but I just read that if you drink 2 glasses of water at least 15 minutes before eating, it will lubricate the gut and release digestive enzymes. Hmm - I don't usually do that.

Anyway, I gotta go pack up my apartment. Happy Saturday :)

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

Navigating medication safety with Celiac disease can be incredibly stressful, especially when dealing with asthma and severe allergies on top of it. While I don't have personal experience with the HealthA2Z brand of cetirizine, your caution is absolutely warranted. The inactive ingredients in pills, known as excipients, are often where gluten can be hidden, and since the FDA does not require gluten-free labeling for prescription or over-the-counter drugs, the manufacturer's word is essential. The fact that you cannot get a clear answer from Allegiant Health is a significant red flag; a company that is confident its product is gluten-free will typically have a customer service protocol to answer that exact question. In situations like this, the safest course of action is to consider this product "guilty until proven innocent" and avoid it. A better alternative would be to ask your pharmacist or doctor to help you identify a major national brand of cetirizine (like Zyrtec) whose manufacturer has a verified, publicly stated gluten-free policy for that specific medication. It's not worth the risk to your health when reliable, verifiable options are almost certainly available to you. You can search this site for USA prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

What you're describing is indeed familiar to many in the Celiac community, especially in the early stages of healing. When the intestinal villi are damaged from Celiac disease, they struggle to properly digest and absorb fats, a condition known as bile acid malabsorption. This can cause exactly the kind of cramping and spasms you're seeing, as undigested fats can irritate the sensitive gut lining. It is highly plausible that her reactions to dairy and eggs are linked to their higher fat content rather than the proteins, especially since she tolerates lean chicken breast. The great news is that for many, this does improve with time. As her gut continues to heal on a strict gluten-free diet, her ability to produce the necessary enzymes and bile to break down fats should gradually return, allowing her to slowly tolerate a wider variety of foods. It's a slow process of healing, but your careful approach of focusing on low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like seeds and avocado is providing her system the best possible environment to recover. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal. This article may be helpful: Thank you for sharing your story—it's a valuable insight for other parents navigating similar challenges.

I had a very rough month after diagnosis. No exaggeration, lost so much inflammatory weight, I looked like a bag of bones, underneath i had been literally starving to death. I did start feeling noticeably better after a month of very strict control of my kitchen and home. What are you eating for breakfast and lunch? I ignored my doc and ate oats, yes they were gluten free, but some brands are at the higher end of gluten free. Lots of celics can eat Bob's Red Mill gluten-free oats, but not me. I can now eat them, but they have to be grown and processed according to the "purity protocol" methods. I mail order them, Montana Gluten-Free brand. A food and symptoms and activities log can be helpful in tracking down issues. You might be totally aware, but I have to mention about the risk of airborne gluten. As the doc that diagnosed me warned . . Remember eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all lead to your stomach and intestines.  Are you getting any cross contamination? Airborne gluten? Any pets eating gluten (they eat it, lick themselves, you pet them...)? Any house remodeling? We live in an older home, always fixing something. I've gotten glutened from the dust from cutting into plaster walls, possibly also plywood (glues). The suggestions by many here on vitamin supplements also really helped me. I had some lingering allergies and asthma, which are now 99% gone. I was taking Albuterol inhaler every hour just to breathe, but thiamine in form of benfotiamine kicked that down to 1-2 times a day within a few days of starting it. Also, since cutting out inflammatory seed oils (canola, sunflower, grapeseed, etc) and cooking with real olive oil, avocado oil, ghee, and coconut oil, I have noticed even greater improvement overall and haven't used the inhaler in months! It takes time to weed out everything in your life that contains gluten, and it takes awhile to heal and rebuild your health. At first it's mentally exhausting, overwhelming, even obsessive, but it gets better and second nature.
