I guess i need to get serious on changing my eating habits. But dang it is so hard lol

I echo this sentiment exactly!

I bumped my toe when getting OUT of the tub, lol. Yeah, I bumped it. It didn't hurt really bad, but I did feel it, and it's ached since then. <_<

I would think that would cause some pain. Those steristrips certainly have a way of making things look worse for a time don't they! :P

I have been so tired lately......didn't even get up til about an hour ago.

Off to school. I'll check in later. :)

Yeah....lets just all pack up and go. How fun it would be!

That would totally be fun!!

Also, I wanted to ask.....does thyroid regulate temperature too? Seems like I'm very easily overheated or cold. I'm also going through a very tired phase right now. That may be part of getting sick again. I really need to lay off the ice cream and cut my sugar intake again so my immune system has half a chance of combating these viruses. That will take a lot of self-convicing! :P

I need to get my thyroid checked too. I am always cold. My hubby is always hot - so we are complete opposites. Needless to say....we fight over the thermostat.

I'm pretty sure it will be very hard to NOT rachel it.....and btw...I only type with one finger. :P

I flunked my typing class.

  :o :o

One finger???? Just think how much you could post if you typed with both hands!!!

Julie, the "tonage of parasites" gave me a laugh, too!

You all might enjoy this tidbit. When I went for the pre-consult with the nurse practitioner for the colonoscopy coming up, she asked about the changes in bowel habits I reported. I told her a bit about starting SCD and two days later passing a bunch of roundworms. She just about fell off her chair, and said, "Where did you get those?" I (thinking it was a dumb question) said that I had read 90% of Americans had them. She said, "I don't THINK so!!" Then she decided it was because I live overseas. I didn't say anything else (clearly no point), but was thinking...

This kind of attitude from the healthcare workers just pees me off! I get very frustrated....its rediculous and ignorant!!! I am still amazed how the diet change alone caused that to happen.

Heck...we cant even talk about taking digestive enzymes without some people freaking out!

I've heard of it but I've never seen it. I'm pretty sure I wont ever see it now that Lisa "the Rachelville film critic" has given it 2 thumbs down. :P

So what is worth seeing?? I wanna see Juno, 27 Dresses....and one other one (cant remember the name right now).

Lisa the film critic!! Lisa has man talents ;)

I saw 27 Dresses, I thought it was cute. I just watched Dan In Real Life and Things We Lost in the Fire over the weekend and liked them both. DIRL is a comedy and TWLITF is a serious drama.

Yep, the beasties when they cross the border or live in the USA all know the rules, and read them to all their progeny--"not allowed to infect any Americans--they are too clean!"

Actually it struck me as arrogance--that other countries have them because they are dirty, but not the USA.

This is amusing Sherry!

Yeah, we here in the U.S. have a strict no worm poilicy, no crossing of the borders, no entering the water supply or environment.....:rolleyes:

Everyone,

Today's adventure...shower. My doctor gave me the okay to shower today, lol. So I did. I unwrapped my foot and then decided I didn't feel particularly sure-footed, so sat on my bench and still used the hand-held nozzle, but it was HEAVEN to not have to prop my foot up on the side of the tub...I actually got it wet and that was wonderful. I wrapped it back up when done, but now my foot is achey. I may have to take a Tylenol in a little while. I'm pretty sure I don't have the bandage too tight and I think I've got it wrapped up the way he showed me, so it may be because I bumped my toe when getting OUT of the tub, lol. Yeah, I bumped it. It didn't hurt really bad, but I did feel it, and it's ached since then. <_<

I've been itching to paint again. I haven't painted in about 3 years because the chemicals really bothered me, but I think I may drag out some watercolors or acrylic and just play around. For those that don't know, I used to paint...as in oil paint, like landscapes, etc. I was never very good, but it was fun and it was very therapuetic.

Boy Donna, yesterday you got out to get the mail and today you get to shower, it's the little things that bring so much joy!!:lol:

Sorry you bumped your toe getting out of the shower though, OUCH!

About the painting, what about taking up water colors?? Those aren't as txic are they?

I have been so tired lately......didn't even get up til about an hour ago.

Off to school. I'll check in later. :)

Andrea, I am so far behind. I missed what you announced about T and her testing :( And another school year is starting up again, geesh. It seems like summer just started, where does the time go?!?

Rachel, more about the GBS, I have to agree with Paula when she was talking about the importance of finding the reason one is overweight in the first place. If there is overeating due to unresolved emotionsal issues, or stress eating patterns, those aren't going to change or go away after having surgery.

In fact they might get worse, I think it was April who mentioned a recent show Oprah did where the panel of guests transferred their addiction to food on to other things post surgery, like alcohol or gambling. I think the point was getting to the root of the problem, addressing emotional issues and behavior modification, making life style changes rather than a quick fix such as the surgery.

If anyone likes crude humor - The Heartbreak Kid was very funny!!

I saw 27 Dresses and liked it. :P I thought Gabriel was HORRIBLE!

I thought Drillbit Taylor would be funny - but it really wasn't. <_<

We watched National Treasure last night and it was "just okay". Nothing special. <_<

Juno was good. :) I loved DUMA. :) You can watch this with the kids.

Into The Wild was good but sad. :(

Music and Lyrics was pretty good. :)

We do Netflix - as you can see!!

Thanks everyone, I will go get an b-complex vitamin tommorow. They are closed on mondays.

Juno-I didnt like this movie at all. I did love 27 dresses tho. I bought college road trip 3 weeks ago and havent had the time or energy to watch it, thank goodness i bought and not rented it lol.

Andrea,

Good luck on the schooling. I homeschooled K one year and it didnt govery well. Needless to say they are in private school now and doing so much better lol. I could not homeschool all 5 kids, even tho i have an teaching certificate lol.

Donna,.

Glad your foot is doing better. You need to keep resting lol When do u go back to work?

Rachel,.

I dont think being 50 pounds is really overweight. I would be surprised if she found an dr that would do it for 50 pounds. I really think she can do this on her own. If she has no health problems now, then why chance them. Im not one that thinks people are really overwight til they weigh in their 300's, which both of my grandparents were. That is why i stress about my weight so much.

paula

I know there is more i wanted to say, but i have terrible brain fog today. The kids had molded bread on the table yesterday and it was everywhere

AndreaB Contributor

Julie,

We started a week earlier than I had planned because she is soooo ready to catch up to her grade/age level. I think I emailed you about her test too, but if I didn't I will. :)

Paula,

More mold! Kids are being typical kids BUT they need to learn how much that stuff bothers you.

I don't have a teacher's cert. I do have my associates though.....we are required to have 45 college credits to teach. I'll be learning alot of stuff as we go through the grades I'm sure. Some I've forgotten, some I never learned (like diagramming) and some weren't my strong subjects.

Definitely do, lol.

Glad your foot is doing better. You need to keep resting lol When do u go back to work?

I am off at least until August 14...that's my next followup appointment. I may stay out one more week after that even if the doctor says I can walk. It'll be hard to go from feet elevated all the time to full work schedule in just one weekend, lol.

Dear Everyone,

I got a nice surprise yesterday. Mom got me a bunny! :) He is so cute! There he is in my avatar. I know she knew how much I miss Digger, but I have a feeling she may have had an ulterior motive. She recalls how difficult it was for my brother to get an apartment even though he has a rabbit, too.

Peekaboo is in my room. He likes poking his nose through the holes in the top of his cage. I am nervous about cleaning his cage in there, since his food has oats and wheat in it. The dust could make me ill if I inhale it. Does anyone know where I can get a surgical mask or something to protect me from that? Sometimes I feel like walking around with a hazmat suit on. :(

I have not gotten to catch up on my reading here yet. Hopefully, I will do that tonight. I have to play with my rabbit in my room, because the dog looks at him like a sandwich. Dart is terribly jealous, and went crazy yesterday. When Peekaboo saw himself in the mirror, he froze. I think he figured if he stayed still, that "other" rabbit would go away!

Sincerely,

Jin

Cute bunny Jin! :D

Can they eat gluten free? I know nothing about bunnies and food.

Yes more mold. The sad thing is i told the oldest to clean it up and he threw away good hamburger buns anf left the molded bread. So im trying to wash the dog, which messes with my allergies and deal with mold. Finally i had to go show him exactly were the bread was, of ocurse it was in plain site lol. Then he was oh that bread. It is only bread with mold on every inch of it, but he couldnt see it. Teenagers!!!!!

Jin,

congrats on the rabbit. The girls are getting teddy bear hamsters this week.

Julie,

Are you close to those nasty fires. I dont think you are, but wanted to check.

I want to see all of those. I have the Notebook but haven't watched it yet. I thought I MIGHT get around to it while I'm home recouperating, lol, but no...I'm too lazy to pop the movie in.

Donna Notebook is a really good movie. But don't forget the tissue. You have to see it.

Mercury Rising was okay I guess. It's just that, that kid screams through the whole movie and no wonder with the sandwiches they feed him. I'm sure he's gluten sensitive. But I'm sure the writers knew nothing of it back then.

Rachel Juno is a pretty good movie. I would give it a B+ :D

P.S. I love you was a good movie too.

I can't believe you do only type with one finger. :o Must be a pretty strong little sucker. I mean with all the post you type and all. Must be able to lift 100 pds.

Donna I have been feeling the same way. I want to paint so bad. Basic brand acrylic colors I feel are the best. They don't give out bad chemical smells like the cheaper brands. I like lyquitex but it's very expensive. 10 to 15 dollars for a tube of paint is a lot.

My friend Cristina taught me somewhat on painting. She has a master's in fine art and she knows her stuff. I miss painting too. :(

Mothers always know.

Yup..thats what I'm told.

I say..."How did you know??".....and the answer is always the same..."Because I'm a MOM."

I dont have those psychic abilities yet.

Rachel,

Does your friend drink caffeine, If she does she would could lose weight just by giving up pop.

Yeah...I've been telling her this! Well, I think I kind of went into "lecture" mode about the diet sodas in particular. You know....aspartame and all that. I just couldn't hold back! :D

It was mostly because she was having headaches for awhile...so I figured it could be from the diet sodas and/or caffeine.

She knows this stuff isnt good and she's gonna try to stick to water. :)

The biggest loser online just gives u all the tips like u get on the show. I am signed up for all the fress stuff. I belong to that and denise austins plans. You can get lots of good info just by getting the free newsletters.

Thanks, I told her about this. Do you have to pay to be in the biggest loser club? Are you in the club or you just get free newsletters?

I dont know how this stuff works.

I have no idea why they think gbs would be good for thyroid. I really need to call and talk to her and ask her what she is thinking. Thank goodness she is only 2 month pg and i have timet to change her mind lol.

The thing is (and I told my friend this)....if you're really tired of the weight and just wanna do something to get fast results...the surgery looks really good. If you look into it you can find alot of happy people who are alot thinner. If you look into the consequences...its a high price to pay IMO.

People who are in that situation are gonna get excited by seeing positive results (lots of weight loss) but they might steer away from looking into the negatives that come with it. I think its just human nature. I do the same thing when I'm looking at new treatments....I get excited by the success stories and kind of ignore the rest. In comparison...gastric bypass has serious risks....so I think those things definately shouldnt be ignored. They need to be seriously considered before making a decision.

If your friend still wants to have it done after she has the baby you can send her these videos....just so that you know that she's aware of some of the complications or consequences of having the gastric bypass. I think the best we can do is to just make sure they see all sides of it....and that they really understand what they might be giving up for the weight loss. They have to make their own decision but if they have everything in front of them at least they can make a more *informed* decision.

I sent these same videos to my friend.

I kind of feel like I'm raining on the parade.....but I care for her. I cant see myself just blowing it off like its some "minor" procedure.

After watching all of the happy videos (of people in the process of losing their weight)...and then coming across these...I felt like it was more of a reality check. These videos would have changed my mind if I were considering GBS for myself.

My son is totally addicted to my light. It's funny. He doesn't see any results from it. He doesn't feel any results from it. But he's drawn to using it every day for about an hour. It's like he's thirsty for it.

:lol: Thats funny. He's drawn to the light.

I can see myself doing the same thing. Even if I feel nothing I might just be drawn to it that way...especially if its giving off a little bit of HEAT. It might become my new best friend.

Something more for you to Google .... I think you're running out of things.

Naaaaw...I dont think it'll ever happen. I'll just make stuff up it ever came to that. ;)

You think I might be addicted??:lol:

NoGluGirl Contributor

Dear Andrea,

I am not sure if there is gluten-free rabbit food. Guinea pigs and rabbits will die without their food, because they must have Vitamin C. I know Mom has an allergy mask. Would that work? Or, could I buy a new allergy mask? We used to wear it when we mowed the lawn.

Dear Paula,

Rhubarb should be safe. It is relatively low in carbohydrate, and is related to buckwheat. I have never tried one, and it is on my list of new foods to try. There are so many good foods to choose from! Other foods I would like to try are: persimmon, pomegranite, pluot, leek, rutabaga, spaghetti squash, acorn squash, butternut squash, tomatillo, eggplant, and plantain.

It is not just teenagers with the mold! My parents do not smell it when I can. Their hand towel in the bathroom will be moldy, and for some reason, they do not smell it! I suppose due to our being so sensitive to mold, that explains why the odor is so much stronger and its presence is bothersome for us. There are times where something moldy is around, and I am like "How can you not smell that?"

My bunny is so sweet! He is trying to adjust. It is scary for him right now. I have the fan on so he stays cool, because my room is always so hot during the day. Rabbits do better in cooler weather. I am allergic to dog and bunny fur, but would rather sneeze than give up my fuzzy babies!

Teddy Bear hamsters are so cute! They are wonderful starter pets. We used to have a bunch of them.

One was named Teddy Bear. She was very smart, and cute. I think she was probably the best natured hamster we ever had.

Tawny was not as friendly, especially if you woke her up. She would hiss and then slap you! It was really funny. Something that can also be thought as mean behavior is hamsters often will bite your fingers if they smell food on you. Be sure the girls are mindful of using scented soaps and lotions for that reason. Having very sturdy cages is important, since they often are little Houdinis! We had ours get loose a number of times.

Dear Lisa,

It is good to see you! I was wondering where you had gone. Good luck with your job hunt! I know you can find something good. There are some places on the East Side here needing cashiers and such. I am not really well enough to work, but figure if I could just last a couple of months, it is better than nothing.

As far as movies go, I think Mom saw Wall-E. It was cute. I never go to the theater, because it is too loud. A great movie I saw on television a while back was "Hard Rain" with Christian Slater and Morgan Freeman. The other day, Dad and I watched the end of "Unbreakable" with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. I love movies with Bruce Willis, especially "Die-Hard".

I miss doing art as well. I need to get back at doing it. Painting is fun. I prefer plain acrylics myself. Mom and I used to paint ceramic figurines, but have not done that in an eternity. I also love painting glass jars and adorning them with jewels and things like that.

Dear Rachel,

I agree aspartame is not really healthy, and it could slow your friend's weightloss efforts. We often do not realize how much havoc we place on our metabolism until it is too late. Introducing these chemicals is one of the worst things we have ever done to ourselves. Something needs to change, but it is not our body chemistry. Most of us do things for a quick result, but do not consider the dangerous consequences.

I like light, too. Sunlight is my favorite kind. Perhaps we are moths? That would explain a few things. If we could learn to fly, we could save a ton on gas money!

Sincerely,

Jin

So lately its about the towel in the bathroom. I guess after all this time its supossed to be a "decoration"....I'm not supossed to be "touching" it.

Its kind of habit for me...I've been using the towel this whole time (3 years now)! Its sitting right next to the sink...what else would it be there for??

She washes it and puts it back....and yeah...I use it again...and again...and again.

So now everyday she's holding the towel in front of my face saying "Rachel...Dont touch...DEC-OR-A-TION."

Rachel, this cracks me up!!

We watched National Treasure last night and it was "just okay". Nothing special. <_<

The first one or the sequel April? I LOVED the first one, I thought the sequel was just average, definitely not as exciting as the first one imo.

I want to see Into the Wild, I just finished reading the book.

Music and Lyrics is a favorite of mine, I love love love Hugh Grant :)

I got a nice surprise yesterday. Mom got me a bunny! :) He is so cute!

How cute Jin, Peekaboo is a perfect name too!!

I had two bunnies when I was younger as pets, a gray one and a black one.

Check out a medical supply store for the masks ;)

Julie,

Are you close to those nasty fires. I dont think you are, but wanted to check.

No, they are way west and north from me. I haven't seen the latest for tonight but they looked kind of scary earlier, lots of homes in danger.

I don't know if rhubarb is good for us or not  I've only eaten it in a berry pie before, and I can tell you it was darn tasty, of course it was swimming in sugar so that might have had something to do with it

P.S. I love you was a good movie too.

Has anyone seen the new batman movie or wall-e?

I want to see PS I Love You too, thanks for the reminder Lisa

My cousins gave Wall-E a thumbs down, they said it had a good message about the environment and everything but they thought there wasn't any story to it really and a little on the strange and boring side.

Rachel--24 Collaborator
I want to see all of those. I have the Notebook but haven't watched it yet. I thought I MIGHT get around to it while I'm home recouperating, lol, but no...I'm too lazy to pop the movie in.

OK...sorry for yelling....but if you have it you should watch it...its really good. :)

Woo-hoo!!

Sorry about the toe-bumping though. :(

Yes to painting....and anything else that brings you joy. :)

I saw 27 Dresses, I thought it was cute. I just watched Dan In Real Life and Things We Lost in the Fire over the weekend and liked them both. DIRL is a comedy and TWLITF is a serious drama.

Julie....I totally liked Dan in Real Life!! I saw it at the theater and made a mental note to buy it. I think its a must for my collection. :)

Yeah, we here in the U.S. have a strict no worm poilicy, no crossing of the borders, no entering the water supply or environment.....:rolleyes:

Yeah....we are a totally worm free country...I think its because we have worm patrols at the borders. We are special!! :D We might have some major health epidemics in our country....but dang it...we are WORM-FREE!!

When I was still seeing the "brilliant" Dr's at my HMO...I requested parasite testing. The Dr. asked if me if I'd been walking barefoot in a third world country!

Yeah....cuz thats really the only way I could ever have gotten a parasite. Whatever.

See what I mean by "brilliant".

Rachel, more about the GBS, I have to agree with Paula when she was talking about the importance of finding the reason one is overweight in the first place. If there is overeating due to unresolved emotionsal issues, or stress eating patterns, those aren't going to change or go away after having surgery.

Yeah...and it makes alot of sense to me. I'm mentioning all of these things to my friend. I think every aspect of it should be considered before jumping into something like this.

She gained the weight while under stress....so that was her way of coping. I used to smoke....and thats how I dealt with stress....I just puffed away. Now I cant smoke...or eat...or drink....all I have is GOOGLE!! :o

Make sure they are yeast free!! Most B's are from yeast.....but they have some brands which are yeast free. ;)

Just thought I'd let you know since you keep having these run-ins with the yeasts and molds!

I actually got molded today myself!! :o

I had a refridgeration problem in my dept. at work today. I had to pull off a bunch of product so they could work on it. There was MOLD growing on the absorbant pad which is usually covered up. I was kind of "testing" myself...I was definately reacting everytime I got near the area. :(

I told my boss....so hopefully they did something about it.

Rachel,.

This is my friend exactly.....she's young, healthy, no comorbitities....and she told me today she wants to lose 80 lbs.

She could lose the 80 lbs. easy with GBS....but she could also lose her good health.

She could lose the weight on her own if she puts it out of her mind that this other "easier" option is available to her. I know she can do this...but I think the surgery is kind of like the carrot dangling in front of Jin's new bunnies face. Know what I mean?

Stupid weight loss surgery!!

Speaking of typing, I do it differently too. Not with one finger, but I have to look at the keys, something about how my brain is wired I think, I can't look away from them and see them in my mind. I don't know if rhubarb is good for us or not  I've only eaten it in a berry pie before, and I can tell you it was darn tasty, of course it was swimming in sugar so that might have had something to do with it

 Yep, think it was the sugar. :)

Seems like it's typically mixed with berry.

She gained the weight while under stress....so that was her way of coping. I used to smoke....and thats how I dealt with stress....I just puffed away. Now I cant smoke...or eat...or drink....all I have is GOOGLE!! :o

At least google is a lot safer. Course you could still gain weight if you don't move. :P

Maybe I need to stop moving then. :P

Am I really the only one who types with one finger??

Carla....it might seem a little "odd" right now....but when I'm energizing my cells at the same time that I'm posting away you might think differently! :P

I think we're in for it ... we'll all have to learn to read faster!

My son came here again last night about midnight and used my light, LOL. No, Rachel, you can't feel heat.

Yeah....we are a totally worm free country...I think its because we have worm patrols at the borders. We are special!! :D We might have some major health epidemics in our country....but dang it...we are WORM-FREE!!

Even my LLMD was surprised I had a tapeworm .... so I never told him about the other worms, LOL.

Speaking of typing, I do it differently too. Not with one finger, but I have to look at the keys, something about how my brain is wired I think, I can't look away from them and see them in my mind. When I played the flute when I was younger I had to write out all the notes, I couldn't read the note fast enough and compute in my brain what note to play, if that even makes sense....

It just takes practice .... for both. Eventually you would have learned to skip even thinking of the name of the note .... just seeing the note would make your fingers go to the right position.

Sometimes in Church they play something in a different key, so I have to transpose the music and write the new notes above what's written, so I have the names of the notes like what you're talking about. It can be a challenge to play that way.

I used to look at the keys for typing, but then started forcing myself to look at the computer screen instead. It didn't take long to really learn where all the keys are ... you just think you can't do it that way. ;)

I love movies, I don't know what to say about them!! I love PS I Love You, Music and Lyrics ... so many movies. Anyone see Lake House? I love that one, too. I saw the new Batman. I didn't really like it .. no comedic relief .... well the Joker was, but he was intense, so it wasn't lighthearted comedy that gives you a break from the show. It was heavy and dark. I liked Hancock much better.

Oooh, how cute!!!! I too used to have a bunny when I was little. He was black and his name was Thunder. We didn't have him long though. I guess I was too young to take care of him properly and my parents gave him back, lol. He also had to stay outside, which wasn't very pet-like, lol.

P.S. I love you was a good movie too.

...

So anyways I am job searching. Wish me luck. I need a job and fast.

Good luck with the job hunt! I also really like PS I love you...good movie!

Donna I have been feeling the same way. I want to paint so bad. Basic brand acrylic colors I feel are the best. They don't give out bad chemical smells like the cheaper brands. I like lyquitex but it's very expensive. 10 to 15 dollars for a tube of paint is a lot.

I have some liquitex left I think...I've got the white definitely and I think some of the others are still usable, lol.

I dont have those psychic abilities yet.

Me either...could it have something to do with giving birth, lol?!:lol:

Am I really the only one who types with one finger??

Quite possibly! My job is typing so I guess I'm pretty fast using all fingers on both hands without looking, lol. Doesn't mean I'm a GOOD typist though, lol.

Music and Lyrics is a favorite of mine, I love love love Hugh Grant :)

Oh yeah, that was cute too!

Donna...WATCH IT!!

Yes ma'am!

Anyone see Lake House?

I actually saw this one while on one of my cruises. I really liked it, and more than I thought I would.

Everyone,

No adventures to report today, lol. All is calm, all is well, no toe bumping, and I don't think I'm wrapped too tight.

I'm about to drag out some paint and play.

Hi @Dizzyma I note what @trents has commented about you possibly posting from the UK.  Just to let you know that am a coeliac based in the UK, so if that is the case, do let me know if can help you with any questions on the NHS provision for coeliacs.    If you are indeed based in the UK, and coeliac disease is confirmed, I would thoroughly recommend you join Coeliac UK, as they provide a printed food and drink guide and also a phone app which you can take shopping with you so you can find out if a product is gluten free or not. But one thing I would like to say to you, no matter where you live, is you mention that your daughter is anxious.  I was always a bit of a nervous, anxious child but before my diagnosis in mid-life my anxiety levels were through the roof.   My anxiety got steadily better when I followed the gluten-free diet and vitamin and mineral deficiencies were addressed.  Anxiety is very common at diagnosis, you may well find that her anxiety will improve once your daughter follows a strict gluten-free diet. Welcome to the celic.com community @Dizzyma! I'm assuming you are in the U.K. since you speak of your daughter's celiac disease blood tests as "her bloods".  Has her physician officially diagnosed her has having celiac disease on the results of her blood tests alone? Normally, if the ttg-iga blood test results are positive, a follow-up endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining to check for damage would be ordered to confirm the results of "the bloods". However if the ttg-iga test score is 10x normal or greater, some physicians, particularly in the U.K., will dispense with the endoscopy/biopsy. If there is to be an endoscopy/biopsy, your daughter should not yet begin the gluten free diet as doing so would allow healing of the small bowel lining to commence which may result in a biopsy finding having results that conflict with the blood work. Do you know if an endoscopy/biopsy is planned? Celiac disease can have onset at any stage of life, from infancy to old age. It has a genetic base but the genes remain dormant until and unless triggered by some stress event. The stress event can be many things but it is often a viral infection. About 40% of the general population have the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. So, for most, the genes remain dormant.  Celiac disease is by nature an autoimmune disorder. That is to say, gluten ingestion triggers an immune response that causes the body to attack its own tissues. In this case, the attack happens in he lining of the small bowel, at least classically, though we now know there are other body systems that can sometimes be affected. So, for a person with celiac disease, when they ingest gluten, the body sends attacking cells to battle the gluten which causes inflammation as the gluten is being absorbed into the cells that make up the lining of the small bowel. This causes damage to the cells and over time, wears them down. This lining is composed of billions of tiny finger-like projections and which creates a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. This area of the intestinal track is where all of our nutrition is absorbed. As these finger-like projections get worn down by the constant inflammation from continued gluten consumption before diagnosis (or after diagnosis in the case of those who are noncompliant) the efficiency of nutrient absorption from what we eat can be drastically reduced. This is why iron deficiency anemia and other nutrient deficiency related medical problems are so common in the celiac population. So, to answer your question about the wisdom of allowing your daughter to consume gluten on a limited basis to retain some tolerance to it, that would not be a sound approach because it would prevent healing of the lining of her small bowel. It would keep the fires of inflammation smoldering. The only wise course is strict adherence to a gluten free diet, once all tests to confirm celiac disease are complete.

Hi all, I have so many questions and feel like google is giving me very different information. Hoping I may get some more definite answers here. ok, my daughter has been diagnosed as a coeliac as her bloods show anti TTG antibodies are over 128. We have started her  on a full gluten free diet. my concerns are that she wasn’t actually physically sick on her regular diet, she had tummy issues and skin sores. My fear is that she will build up a complete intolerance to gluten and become physically sick if she has gluten. Is there anything to be said for keeping a small bit of gluten in the diet to stop her from developing a total intolerance?  also, she would be an anxious type of person, is it possible that stress is the reason she has become coeliac? I read that diagnosis later in childhood could be following a sickness or stress. How can she have been fine for the first 10 years and then become coeliac? sorry, I’m just very confused and really want to do right by her. I know a coeliac and she has a terrible time after she gets gluttened so just want to make sure going down a total gluten free road is the right choice. thank you for any help or advise xx
