Hi,

Do I need to get new tupperware? I wasn't sure if tupperware could soak up gluten or not

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I was told that if the tupperware is not all scratched up its okay. i bought new tupperware (the ones you can throw out after a few uses) but still use old ones when my mom sends me food and i have not gotten sick from them.

hope that helps

I have a similar question. I often put sliced Kraft cheese on veggies for hubby. Does that contaminate the plastic dish?? Is Kraft sliced cheese safe? Haven't checked that one yet.

The dishwasher should do it's job.

Kraft will list if it is wheat, rye, barley...

You should be ok.

I would not use scratch up pots and pans, even if I was not celiac.

I don't use plastic at all - I use glass. It does not stain, hold odors, or cause any health problems (which there is some evidence that plastic does). Other than the fact that it's heavy and can break, it's the best way to go.

I use mostly all glass too, the few pieces of plastic I use are all new for me, no gluten allowed!

I have wondered about this too - since tupperware soaks up colors and ordors (just try getting spaghetti sauce out of a clear tupperware dish!), I was wondering about the gluten. Although I haven't replaced all of mine yet - just the really bad ones. I've only been gluten-free for 2 months so still working on replacing things.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
