Difulcan - Gluten Free?

Ok this is not a pregnancy question, but it is definately a question for woman and I didn't know where else to post it. I figured you ladies would know.

Does anyone know if Difulcan is gluten free? I think I have a slight yeast infection and I wanted to ask the doctor to prescribe it for me. I only had a yeast infection once before and used the over the counter stuff and ended up getting a horrible flu that lasted for several weeks. Most likely it had nothing to do with the over the counter remedy but I'm not willing to risk it. Figured it doesn't get easier than taking 1 pill as long as it's safe.

Thanks. (oh and congrats on all your pregnancies, or good luck if you're trying). :)

Last time I took it, in March I think, it was gluten-free. Also, your dr may want you to try OTC stuff first. It irritates the hell out of me so I lied and said I already did the monistat thing. Just a heads up if your dr. works the same way that mine does :)

Yeah they tried telling me to take the OTC stuff first and I told them that I tried it once and it made me violently ill (I wasn't lying). They then told me that just to make sure it is a yeast infection to maybe try using Aveeno for a few days and if that doesn't help to call back and they will give me the Difulcan. So I said fine, went downstairs to Duane Reade, found the Aveeno (which I'd never used), went back upstairs, called them back and told them while Aveeno sounds like a lovely idea, I'm allergic to oatmeal, which is pretty much what Aveeno is. The nurse started laughing (in a sympathetic way) and said she would have the doctor call in the Difulcan for me.

I sure hope it's gluten-free b/c I just had 2 rounds of the stuff this past week...although mine was the generic form fluconozal (spelling??). I am FINALLY feeling a bit better but it took a week to get rid of the stuff. I hate yeast...stupid celiac!

Keep us posted if you find out anything new or different. I'll do the same!

And I CANNOT believe they told you to buy Aveeno.... :o

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
