I haven't tried ghee, but I'd like to. Do you make your own, or is there a good brand I should look for?

I can't, unfortunately, use coconut oil because I'm intolerant to coconut. :angry:

I thought the brand was Ghee :lol: I just buy it in a glass jar at the Wild Oats. I am afraid to make my own since it's mechanically separated, I figure that the machines are more more accurate than I would be. I don't use it often, usually just for popcorn.

In the same way that Ghee doesn't have casein, I have read that coconut oil does not have the protein in coconut so it usually doesn't bother those allergic to coconut. I thought of you when I read that. Don't go on my word ... it was just something I read the other day ... but it might be worth researching.

:lol: Ghee!

Interesting about the coconut oils. I'm not allergic (that I know of), just intolerant. I know that there is coconut in most natural soaps and shampoos, and those don't cause me any obvious problems.

I am also soy intolerant, and soy oil bothers me, but a small amount of soy lecithin does not :blink:

The article may have said intolerant, I can't remember. I guess it's up to you if you'd want to risk discomfort to see if the oil bothers you or not. Some things are worth the risk ... others are not!

I miss being able to go to any restaurant and eat with everyone else. I always try and recreate the foods I miss myself in a gluten-free and casein free way.

Excuse me for being off topic,but Carrie, your wedding gown is so gorgeous. You look positively enchanting in it, I didn't realize the big day had already gone by. Congratulations.

New Castle Brown Ale, Guiness Stout and Two Hearted Ale. New Grist is good but it is not the same. I miss all of the other gluten foods like a big giant hole in the head.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but there are some unbelievable good recipes in Annalise Roberts' GLuten-Free Baking Classics. There is somethign she calls Submarine Sandwich Bread which tastes to ME like the artisanal bakery breads, and the sandwich bread leaves Kinnikinnick's in the dust! The Sub bread is made in a French bread pan (with little holes like a pizza pan), and the crust is crispy and the bread is chewy and it kept for over a week in my fridge (wrappeed tightly in plastic wrap and then foil) and it reheated beautifully in the toaster oven....the sandwich bread is good enough for a PBJ sandwich.

Her cakes and cookies are amazing, too--I thought the chocolate chip cookies tasted almost exactly like Tollhouse cookies, and the coconut cake was better than any gluten cake I'd ever made before, scratch or mix! (And I love to bake!)

The nicest part is, the good taste totally satisfies the cravings--but the fact that they don't contain gluten means that these recipes don't bring back the cravings after you've eaten the bread (or cakes or cookies), so you don't get trapped in that wanting more andmore andmore cycle.

Dear All,

On the pizza genre, if you live in Colorado, Beau Jo's pizza now has a gluten free menu, and their gluten-free prairie pies (pizzas) have a crust that tastes just like Pizza Hut's!

On another note, a lot of the recipes I've seen suggest using Xantham gum to keep gluten free flours together and also to keep them from getting crumbly. It suggests putting the Xantham gum in before butter. Hope this helps someone!

Oh, this is so easy......

The thing I miss the most is my chinese food feasts..... Nothing beat a night of ordering chinese food from our favourite Szchewan restaurant. Szchewan beef, Szchewan shrimp with peanuts, curry vegetables, beef fried rice smothered in soy sauce, spring rolls, sweet and sour chicken balls.......

Wow! If I could only have that one more time....... :(

Same thing, always. Krispy Kreme doughnuts. When the "Hot Doughnuts" light is on, and you can get them boxed right off the conveyor belt. If I bought them now, I would probably eat the WHOLE dozen while they were hot. Mmmmmm........

I also miss Black & Tan beer. When we would go to Maryland, we'd have steamed crabs, spend the entire DAY cracking those babies, drinking Black & Tan beer.

I also miss the marshmallow doughnuts from the little corner German bakery there. They're not glazed, like some doughnuts are. They're just . . . great. The marshmallow filling is home-made. And Smircase (sp?) cake from there . . .

And King Fish fried white fish sandwiches . . . I ate a TON of them when I was pregnant with Ashley!

Okay, Okay I'm getting hungry. We ate out tonight at one of "their places" their meaning the rest of my family, and I was just watching my husband eat this big sloppy taco salad with nacho cheese, Ugh some days are just harder than others. Oh and has anyone had the bread dream? You know your sitting at the table in a restaraunt eating the bread out of the basket, then you realize its bread and panick?

What happened to the normal nightmares I used to have like falling, or running? LOL....Oh well :D

I can live without gluten, but I really miss dairy. I want a piece of cheese so bad, and maybe some real ice cream. Creamy mushroom soup, or pumpkin pie. I'd like to be able to eat turkey on thanks giving, but since I'm allergic to turkey I can't. I miss the convienence of dining out.

Weird, the same thing happened to me last night! I startled myself awake thinking I had just eaten a bowl of Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup. The only expalnation I have is that my wife has the flu, so I was just being a good husband in my sleep?

Pikelets, real sandwiches, ice-cream, cream buns, doughnuts, hot cross buns, fried runny eggs, sausages, POTATOES, milky drinks, fast food, cappochinos, chocolate, and so on and so on.

I think my MIL makes cream of mushroom soup without using cream. I asked her how she makes it (because it is really good) and she said she just blends the mushrooms in the blender after cooking them. I thought for sure she used cream. I will try to get the recipe from her. She is one of those people that doesn't use recipes though, so I'm not sure if she knows exact ingredients.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
