Is there some 'Most Friends' contest I haven't heard of, as my time has been entirely spent in pod-related activity?

3 of ya added me in the last day & a half!! :o

But before that, I was officially acknowledged w/ Friend status exactly ONCE, by someone I don't actually know at ALL - just know of. (xxxxxxxxx25 btw)

:huh::unsure:

And yet, Tom, you have added no one to your friends list?? How come, huh? Not good enough for ya? :D

Well, I have a BIG confession to make. I have no idea what making someone your friend on here does,--why we do it, what the perks are...Richard suddenly became my FIRST friend a couple of weeks ago, and then more followed. I tend to be something of a sheep, and follow the great flock, so now I have started "befriending"...Do we go to each other's houses? Can I borrow makeup or books from you guys? Do I now have special access to your hidden journals? "Add as friend"...it's a lovely option, and when I get an email announcing that someone has put me on their Friends list, I'm just all warm inside. But I wanna go to some of my friends' places...

When I added my friends on here I looked at it as people who I can always count on. We may have never met, and some of us maybe never will but you are always a mouse click away (times ahve changed and phones are no longer the first choice in contact)

We laugh on this thread, but there have been threads outside this one where we have helped one another and I look at my friends on here just as I do off of here. You guys have helped me.

My newest friends on here are all my sillies :)

Well, you're in the right spot to get there as fast as you can. If I had just stuck with the other threads, it probably would have taken me over a year to get there.

BTW . . . I noticed (from your profile page) that Scott paid you a visit. Hmmmm . . . what's going on between you two? You're not getting any "favors" from him are you?

We've heard that Tom is also into...inflatable things. So the spiked heels may not be on his borrow list, but I notice that in our basement we have a blow-up Santa for our front lawn. ...If you're looking for that sort of thing, Tom. I have to think about whether or not I actually want to hear your answer; this is a Santa Claus effigy, after all... :o:lol:

Okay, I still don't know why we officially make some people "friends". I assumed that you guys already ARE my friends. :) We can send personal messages through PMs to anyone without having them on our "Friends" list. What am I missing? It's gotta be more than borrowing good stuff... and Sarah, what's with the full email box?! I never get emails! I'm out of some huge loop....story of my life...

Oh dear!! Emily, I'm so sorry to hear this. That would make you, in women's shoes, a size 15.

Uhhhhh were you on the swim team?

Lye's my last name. Quite horrid-sounding, really, and it's a toilet cleanser. But at least it's very short to write and spell out to someone. (you can imagine the kidding I got in public school..."Em's a liar! Liar!") My pants were always on fire... :(

Tom how is the pod coming along?

Ahhhhh yes . .. ... . I SHOULD have already stated that it's all full up & ready to roll!! :) :)

Well, not roll exactly .. . . . .it's pretty kewl how they do it. It's like moving ships in drydock. A big contraption detaches from the truck, like a frame on wheels, and surrounds it to be lifted and moved around w/out any tilting or ramps.

The contraption is almost its own vehicle, but I think not since the guy 'driving' it isn't riding in it - just standing/walking.

I'm guessing it'll be on a train for the trip to the Bay Area.

Ahhhhhhh my wonderful Bay Area . . .. .. .home once again. :) :) :) :) :) :)

I suppose a caustic wit runs in the family then?

Goodness! I won't avoid the issue--kept my maiden name...but don't get me started on that. Although...I must ask this: Amanda, are you keeping your last name?....say you are...! ;):)

Okay, so now I'm REALLY a'wonderin...(Thank you, Tom): Not only do I not understand why we make a special Friends list, I haven't understood the dynamics of such list. A few people have put me on their list, and I figured that because we're "Friends", they would be consequently on MY list as well. But nooooo.....So I have to put these people on MY list? Duuuhhhh...what a way to run a railroad. So, here I was thinking I was getting an impressive Friends List in my profile, but there's only Tom. Tom, you're my only friend. :(:P

What the heck is the "friends pending approval" feature on the friends list??

What the heck is the "friends pending approval" feature on the friends list??

Huh?

I was surprised, on my 1st beFriending, getting the PM to inform me I'm a Friend of someone I don't think I'd ever talked to, even once!

I'd expected an opportunity to say ..

<david spade voice> "And you arrrrrre .. .. .?"

SILLLLLLLLIIEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(shaking head)

You need not fret so over the FRIENDS list. It was a feature added - maybe a year ago? None of us is sure why....except that, if someone looks at your page, they can determine if you are poplular or not??????????

and THANK GOD this other disquieting feature was aborted: you could actually RANK people! Go on their profiles and rate from 1 to 5 stars. There was a big brouhaha about taht, and it was abolished........................

and yeah, what IS WITH Sarah and her full pm box???????????? Are all the hot guys writing to her???? I also am out of the loop on this! (well, I am a constant deleter, is this why?)

Carry on sillies, I got nothin!!!!!!!!!

tom Contributor

I saw the Friend's List as an attempt to 'MySpace it up' a little.

I have no friends. :( Can anyone recommend a San Jose (we say it "sannozay" btw) psychologist/psychiatrist for me?

And woohoo! Car getting tune-up now and I'm Hittin' the Road this afternoon!!! :D

(Ahh reminded of old Meat Puppets song which starts "We got road, we got time, so we're outta here") :)

1st stop Las Vegas to visit a cousin and spend the night. Then it'll be off to the beautiful metropolis of Fernley NV, via what MUST be one of the most boring roads in the West. <yawn>

A few days of fun w/ the 11 & 8yr olds there, before heading west again.

Aha! Another lyric! "Headed out to where the pavement turns to sand". Neil Young, Thrasher, ~2min before the line in my sig. :) :)

So here is my funny of the day

I walk down to the car at lunch with John. I have a bottle of coke. I sit down in the car to open it and it was like New Years Eve when some corks a new bottle of champagne. All the coke was everywhere. All over my khakis all over my pink shirt and all over and down my sleeve of my white lab coat. I used my tide bleach pen as best as I could. I am still dirty though.

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.

In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.
    • trents
Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
