Sarah,

What a story! I'm so happy to hear that gluten may be the problem. It's funny, isn't it...sometimes in the frustration of living with this food restriction, we wish the cause of our symptoms could be ANYTHING else! Hearing a story like this allows me to give my head a good shake--my illness can be controlled with a diet change. It ain't cancer!

BTW, I LOVE the name Ezra! It was the second choice on our list of boy names, and Jack won out... :)

I know what you mean. If someone had explained Celiac to me a couple years ago, I would have been horrified at the thought of it for my kids! These days, I've found myself praying for it for Ezra- as opposed to him having something else. Going gluten-free (for us anyways) has been a cakewalk, comparatively. I'd rather it be trouble with gluten than anything!

About his name, thanks! One thing my husband and were able to agree on really quickly was our kids' names. I actually love the name Jack though, and it was one of my top choices for Ezra- isn't that funny?

Happy Halloween Sillies!

What are we all dressing in today?

Happy Halloween!!! Oh, I love Halloween. I've got Night of the Living Dead on, gluten-free cookie dough chilling in the fridge (to be made when the kids get home), Halloween cupcakes on the counter. Both the kids wore their costumes to school today. Lucas is Spiderman, and Ezra decided to be Darth Vader again.

I walk Ezra into his preschool room every morning, and I'll tell you what-- those kids were WIRED already, and it was only 8:30!!! One of the teachers was running late, so I hung around and helped fix breakfast for everyone. Omg, the kids' costumes were adorable! Little 4-yr-old fairies and ninjas and princesses and superheroes. I love it! :D

I sent gluten-free cupcakes with the boys, and made a list of the most common/popular gluten-free candies and chips for the teachers. I wasn't sure they wouldn't freak out if I handed them the 40 page list I've got going at home. Maybe if I organize it better... and put it in nice 3 ring binders. Still trying to figure out how to handle everything in our school system.

I'm dressing up as a witch again tonight- my favorite costume. Hubby is Michael Myers this year.

What are you today, Amanda?

I am not wearing anything but I have a nice white dress to wear at home...I decided to save that for another personal holiday coming up.

We are actually getting ready for the hospitals halloween parade. Our kid patients (who are well enough) get dressed up and they have a parade through the main floor and all the offices hand out candy and goodies. Let me tell you, the bags are stuffed with goodies for them. Its fun but sad. The kids are happy though and smile. I think it helps them take their mind off being here.

So I will let you know what I see when I get back up here.

Totally agree . . . let me know if I push it too far with the "rubbing your nose in it" routine and you are about to come after me with a cornstalk. Hmmmm,. . . you didn't happen to spear a half-nekkid man in Susie's neighborhood with your cornstalk, did you?

Well we had about 40 kids come through, and there is a bunch more who couldnt come down due to how sick they were. They were all so cute!!!

I think Susan's half-nekkid organ donor (too late for BOB :( ) inspired a few of you...I wonder if you are easily hypnotized as well...hmmm willing subjects...can you hear my metronome?<tick-tock>

Janet,

You've never seen "The Shining"? :o

There was a day when you could lose a "star" for such a thing...ahhh, the good old days

I am fully clothed for those that are wondering B)

They were cute but sad, alot of them were walking this year. Last year most were in wheel chairs or wagons, we have a lot of riding toys for the kids here.

There was a baby who was a bumble bee....she had cancer and was wearing a mask.

There was a snow white was 3 that was in an accident and was here recovering.

Halloween and Friday the 13th are my favorites.

Freddy Kruger never interested me, the other 2 series had unique ways of killing.

I know- but it's heartening that they get to celebrate. I remember when my friend's mom was in the hospital at Christmas, we went Christmas caroling in the hospice ward and they were so appreciative. It was heartbreaking, but beautiful.

I do adore horror movies! I watched Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2 last night. I have them on DVD, watched many times. They are MUCH better than I expected them to be.

My favorite series is Nightmare on Elm Street, actually, and I love the first Halloween.

I used to HATE them but now I love a good scare (do NOT like movies with "real" violence like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers- those freak me out).

Nightmare on Elm Street brings back so many memories....saw it at the drive-in (wish we still had one!) with a bunch of friends in high school (actually my BIL was there). I was SO scared and one of the guys popped up outside my window and yelled "Boo!!!!!". I got so scared I ducked and smacked my head on the stick shift. OUCH!

Isn't Johnny Depp in the first one?

Scariest movie EVER...the Exorcist. Me NO likey demonic possesion.

Oh my dear sillies- I'm feeling very verklempt today (been dying to use that word!). Don't know if it's the Lyme, the virus, turning 40, PMS or all of the above but I need ideas of something to cheer me up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

I am not into the newer scary movies which show torture either....I do not like any of the Saw movies....anything where people have to suffer.

Bev!! You're a fellow scorpio....ohhhhh, that makes perfect sense. We are just so damned WEIRD...Do you know that each of the astrological signs has an area of the body that it rules, so to speak? Scorps head up the sexual organ dept. I wasn't certain how to react to this information when I read it, and then reread it many times as I kept looking it up. Hmmmm....an interesting factoid for a trivia night? Cocktail party?

Horror movies I've always stayed away from...I will say, though, that there was one that I saw about fifteen years ago called "Pin". Unforgettable...if you horror freaks like very creepy, mess-with-your-mind, non-violent stuff, you must search it out.

And Richard, being fully clothed could have gained you a star when the rating system was in place...or lost you one...we've never seen you.:lol:

I find myself in very lonely company here today....must confess - - I have utterly NO interest in halloween....almost never have. and OMG again! Do you all think that "man" was a half-nekkid early halloween ZOMBIE??????????? I am telling you, he DID have a zombie look about him, and the strangest, slow shuffle......

I used to HATE them but now I love a good scare (do NOT like movies with "real" violence like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Natural Born Killers- those freak me out).

OMG!!! Am in complete and total agreement here. Those are on my Most Hated list of movies. HAAAAATED Pulp Fiction! So eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevilllllllllll!!!!

OMG the Exorcist  - Scariest thing of all - except for Silence of the Lambs - scariest movie of my life - I cried for nearly 30 minutes after leaving teh theater.......

I see Richard's got his annual MOST SPOOKY avatar up again - that inexplicably crazy scene.

hmmm.....

Well, I am not sure I should tell you halloween lovers this, but I am the cranky old lady who hides in teh back of the house, lights out, no candy......forever and ever I have been this way.

My 53-y-old brother, on the other hand, brings his fire pit to the front yard, camps out, has about 20 carved pumpkins (the vomiting and murdering kind), spooky music playing, and the whole house decorated in front as haunted. Sometimes I just go over there to enjoy HIS joy. ;)

Don't feel bad, I dont do trick or treating at my house, (the kids did this last week anyway) I save my efforts and spirits for our sick kids here. I believe it is more meaningful to them. The actual kids who go out trick or treating last year when I took my moms foster kids out werent even dressed in costumes. They just wore regular clothes and begged for candy.

Hello all! My life in the last five years has been crazy. I got married in 2020 at the age of 27, pregnant with our first child almost two months later, gave birth in 2021. We had another baby in April of 2023 and our last baby this March of 2025. I had some issues after my second but nothing ever made me think, "I should see a doctor about this." After having my last baby this year, my body has finally started to find its new rhythm and balance...but things started to feel out of sorts. A lot of symptoms were convoluted with postpartum symptoms, and, to top it all off, my cycle came back about 4m postpartum. I was having reoccurring migraines, nausea, joint pain, numbness in my right arm, hand and fingers, tummy problems, hives. I finally went to my PCP in August just for a wellness check and I brought up my ailments. I'm so thankful for a doctor that listens and is thorough. He ended up running a food allergy panel, an environmental respiratory panel, and a celiac panel. I found out I was allergic to wheat, allergic to about every plant and dust mites, and I did have celiac. I had an endoscopy done on October 3 and my results confirmed celiac in the early stages! I am truly blessed to have an answer to my issues. When I eat gluten, my brain feels like it's on fire and like someone is squeezing it. I can't think straight and I zone out easily. My eyes can't focus. I get a super bad migraine and nausea. I get so tired and irritable and anxious. My body hurts sometimes and my gut gets bloated, gassy, constipated, and ends with bowel movements. All this time I thought I was just having mom brain or feeling the effects of postpartum, sleep deprivation, and the like (which I probably was having and the celiac disease just ramped it up!) I have yet to see a dietician but I've already been eating and shopping gluten-free. My husband and I have been working on turning our kitchen 100% gluten-free (we didn't think this would be so expensive but he assured me that my health is worth all the money in the world). There are still a few things to replace and clean. I'm already getting tired of reading labels. I even replaced some of my personal hygiene care for myself and the kids because they were either made with oats or not labeled gluten-free. I have already started feeling better but have made some mistakes along the way or have gotten contamination thrown into the mix. It's been hard! Today I joked that I got diagnosed at the worst time of the year with all the holidays coming up. I will just need to bring my own food to have and to share. It will be okay but different after years of eating "normally". Today I ordered in person at Chipotle and was trying not to feel self-conscious as the line got long because they were following food-allergy protocols. It's all worth it to be the healthiest version of myself for me and my family. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little overwhelmed and a little overloaded!  I am thankful for this community and I look forward to learning more from you all. I need the help, that's for sure!

On the AIP diet, all processed foods are eliminated.  This includes gluten-free bread.  You'll be eating meats and vegetables, mostly.  Meats that are processed, like sausages, sandwich meats, bacons, chicken nuggets, etc., are eliminated as well.  Veggies should be fresh, or frozen without other ingredients like sauces or seasonings.  Nightshade vegetables (eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers) are excluded.  They contain alkaloids that promote a leaky gut and inflammation.  Dairy and eggs are also eliminated.   I know it sounds really stark, but eating this way really improved my health.  The AIP diet can be low in nutrients, and, with malabsorption, it's important to supplement vitamins and minerals.
    • Yaya
Thank you for responding and for prayers.  So sorry for your struggles, I will keep you in mine.  You are so young to have so many struggles, mine are mild by comparison.  I didn't have Celiac Disease (celiac disease) until I had my gallbladder removed 13 years ago; at least nothing I was aware of.  Following surgery: multiple symptoms/oddities appeared including ridges on fingernails, eczema, hair falling out in patches, dry eyes, upset stomach constantly and other weird symptoms that I don't really remember.  Gastro did tests and endoscopy and verified celiac disease. Re heart: I was born with Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP) and an irregular heartbeat, yet heart was extremely strong.  It was difficult to pick up the irregular heartbeat on the EKG per cardiologist.  I had Covid at 77, recovered in 10 days and 2 weeks later developed long Covid. What the doctors and nurses called the "kickoff to long Covid, was A-fib.  I didn't know what was going on with my heart and had ignored early symptoms as some kind of passing aftereffect stemming from Covid.  I was right about where it came from, but wrong on it being "passing".  I have A-fib as my permanent reminder of Covid and take Flecainide every morning and night and will for the rest of my life to stabilize my heartbeat.
    • larc
When I accidentally consume gluten it compromises the well-being of my heart and arteries. Last time I had a significant exposure, about six months ago, I had AFib for about ten days. It came on every day around dinner time. After the ten days or so it went away and hasn't come back.  My cardiologist offered me a collection of pharmaceuticals at the time.  But I passed on them.
    • klmgarland
So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure! Thank you kitty kitty   I am going to look this diet up right away.  And read the paleo diet and really see if I can make this a better situation then it currently is.
