I am scared to really stay there anymore. These people freak me out.

Wow...Amanda, I don't have any real advice or solutions to this one (do you have any sick beta fish? Problems with hovering form?)...but I'm sorry you have to live with that kind of stress. Has the yeti stayed with you yet? Check to see if there are any pet regulations for your building, and then we could ship him there. A massive, terrifying-looking beast can quell reprehensible, ghetto-type behavior, I would imagine...:lol:

Got a question....

What's with the "post icons, (optional)" box on this reply page? The choices are the same emoticons under "show all", with a couple of tantalizing additions--our green guy, and a snazzy arrow. But if we choose one, doesn't show in our text.

It's kind of starting to make me a little crazy. Is Scott just teasing us, seemingly offering cool little guys and arrows, but AH! Nope...can't really use them! This is very poor emoticol.....

He has stayed with us and he was allowed.

SO the manager of the complex who also lives there called the cops on them last night. I spoke with the cops this morning. They were very helpful. The kids and mom are being evicted and need to be out by 3/16. Thank Goodness!

I am almost on my way out the door, I am heading off to my moms, hoping to beat the snow. I cant wait to see her and the baby. I am off tomorrow too and will be spending it with my mom. :):)

So I will check in with everyone later tonight or tomorrow night.

Have a good day!

I think you can add them if you are starting a topic but now that I think about it, I don't know that they work anymore since Scott changed the format. I think I used the green guy when I started the green guy emoticon thread but he doesn't show up anymore . . . what a waste!!! Somebody should complain . . . you do it, Emily.

I brought up the missing Post Icons last week and only got 2 "What in hell"s in response!!!!!!

They used to show up at the start of any Post - maybe to start the line w/ the poster's name.

I wasn't sure if they were just missing for phone surfers or for everyone.

I miss them.

A waste of terrific icons, indeed. Might be time for a new thread, complaining and asking, simply, Why? Scott will likely spot it, see the names of the responders and think, "Bah! ....and how we are no longer able to hover....

Hey!!!! Who the heck chose a home w/ nasty bathrooms in the 1st place?

I so want to open the window and scream "shut up" or anonymously call the police, but I'm scared it will get traced back to me :lol:

I tried to call 'em anonoymously (heehee Julie edited since yesterday :P ) once on some neighboUrs. Sadly, in response to their reluctance to come, at one point I used the phrase "whaddaya . ..gonna wait 'til he kills her??".

I'd used the word anonymous to start the call, but they CALLED BACK a few minutes after the 1st call ended!!

Now I know, or at least think I know, the way to be anonymous is to call the switchboard #, then get connected to Emergency Services or whatever. Hmmm maybe that wouldn't really work either.

Couple weeks later a SWAT Team was a few feet from my door!! Hearing commotion, I started to open my door, and quickly obeyed a command to stay inside.

The kids and mom are being evicted and need to be out by 3/16. Thank Goodness!

I have to tell you guys what Stepford did.......

so yesterday about 5 p.m., Annie and I returned home. I went out to the mailbox, I actually had real clothing on for once rather than sweats/pj's (my normal slovenly attire for venturing out to get the mail).

So, Stepford comes out to check mail also, and she is in sweats/tennies. Now, do you think I would think anything of this outfit? Of course not - it pleased me. But, she actually commented on it - - had to make an excuse for her garb - said, "I'm dressed this way because I just went to Pilates."

Well, what I'm MOST shocked at is that she felt she had to explain her attire - - mygawd - she is ALWAYS dressed to the nines.....

so I looked at her and said - - "it comforts me to see you dressed this way - - it makes you seem like the rest of us."

she did laugh........but mygawd.......'tis most intimidating living next to such perfection........if she even SAW my house right now........

and with that, I must sigh off - - massive cleaning rampage to happen today.

AHHH!! This explains everything! Those guys in the Y weight room, standing together, wailin' away on tenors and altos....those instruments were cardio equipment!!

Must catch up but had to write about a new phrase I learned today (oh thank you great god of gmail). "Nolens volens". It means whether willing or unwilling.

As in:

1. Emily will measure the inseam of that Yeti nolens volens. (Somehow I think the yeti would be perfectly willing!).

2. You will pick up that log you left beside the toilet nolens volens.

I like that better than "whether you like it or not"....how about scaring your kids with "Clean that room nolens volens and I mean NOW! (Or clean that room before I NOLENS VOLENS your arse- clearly improper usage but sounds GOOD!).

It's also a classy way of saying willy-nilly!

elye Community Regular

Nolens volens.....Excellent. I shall sprinkle my conversation with this expression effective immediately, and when the opportunity ariseth.

Willy-nilly? I've always understood this to mean "haphazardly; at random"....as in: We are a bunch of Willy-nilly Sillies.....!

...Must now take Gus out for his jaunt...it's -14....Nolens volens....

 OMG - you should SEE what I wear whilst at home typing or working.....I actually DO run out to mailbox in such scroungy attire, speedy fast......like a stealthy, slovenly, ill-kempt middle-aged bullet.

To make up for this, I put makeup on EVERY SINGLE DAY, in case Stepford pops in, or in case there's a.....tsunami or something and I must dash out of my house....

(you think I am kidding - I am not  )

Oh I know!!!!........ - I see ladies with fabulous matching trendy outfits at the gym......somehow mine all clashes, manky trainers, grEy socks (GAD!!! don't even want to tell you what my sports bra is like!! )

SPORTS BRA?????????????? <_< Well, I don't even NEED one a'them. BAH!!!!!!!!!!!

<contemplating fabulous boob job to carry me into middle age - much more useful than new car, methinks>

nolens volens......must do etymological study on this phrase or can't use it satisfyingly and in good conscience.

Oh dear Sillies- I am saddened by the fact (fat?) that I have grown quite UHM...PLUMP since beginning Lyme treatment. Thirty pounds! That's what I get for doing something about nausea on a daily basis and unable to tolerate more than 5 foods at a time. And I can't go out an rin a mile so....you will ALL have to pledge to dedicate helping me laugh off the weight- get out your funnies!

I think snorting is worth 50 calories.

Guffawing is clearly 100.

Laughing out loud...eh...200

Snorting is 250. Ok let's get started!

Guffawing

. . . and we'll still be talking "poop".

Is talking poop like talking smack? :P

Ah, I miss having a live heating pad, lol!

Donna- Get thee a live heating pad (four legs is good, but two legs would be even better! ;)

 ..did someone say joint????.....can we smoke them in the home???.... ....what A BLAST!!!!!!!!!!

Thart comment was at least 200 calories!!!!!!! I think my hubby even lost weight when I read it to him!

I DID practice sax yesterday :D:) for just the second time since moving.

Tom- I didn't, uhm, know, you could practice for this :o:lol: Oh, right sax, sax. :P

Hmmmm.....Are there treadmills for your lips?

The image of this alone cracked me up! I'm going to start lifting weights with mine so that I can get a bigger pout (to go along with my bigger butt :P )

so I looked at her and said - - "it comforts me to see you dressed this way - - it makes you seem like the rest of us."

and with that, I must sigh off - - massive cleaning rampage to happen today.

Susie- Most excellent retort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum, @Judy M! Yes, he definitely needs to continue eating gluten until the day of the endoscopy. Not sure why the GI doc advised otherwise but it was a bum steer.  Celiac disease has a genetic component but also an "epigenetic" component. Let me explain. There are two main genes that have been identified as providing the "potential" to develop "active" celiac disease. We know them as HLA-DQ 2.5 (aka, HLA-DQ 2) and HLA-DQ8. Without one or both of these genes it is highly unlikely that a person will develop celiac disease at some point in their life. About 40% of the general population carry one or both of these two genes but only about 1% of the population develops active celiac disease. Thus, possessing the genetic potential for celiac disease is far less than deterministic. Most who have the potential never develop the disease. In order for the potential to develop celiac disease to turn into active celiac disease, some triggering stress event or events must "turn on" the latent genes. This triggering stress event can be a viral infection, some other medical event, or even prolonged psychological/emotional trauma. This part of the equation is difficult to quantify but this is the epigenetic dimension of the disease. Epigenetics has to do with the influence that environmental factors and things not coded into the DNA itself have to do in "turning on" susceptible genes. And this is why celiac disease can develop at any stage of life. Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition (not a food allergy) that causes inflammation in the lining of the small bowel. The ingestion of gluten causes the body to attack the cells of this lining which, over time, damages and destroys them, impairing the body's ability to absorb nutrients since this is the part of the intestinal track responsible for nutrient absorption and also causing numerous other food sensitivities such as dairy/lactose intolerance. There is another gluten-related disorder known as NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity or just, "gluten sensitivity") that is not autoimmune in nature and which does not damage the small bowel lining. However, NCGS shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. It is also much more common than celiac disease. There is no test for NCGS so, because they share common symptoms, celiac disease must first be ruled out through formal testing for celiac disease. This is where your husband is right now. It should also be said that some experts believe NCGS can transition into celiac disease. I hope this helps.

My husband has had lactose intolerance for his entire life (he's 68 yo).  So, he's used to gastro issues. But for the past year he's been experiencing bouts of diarrhea that last for hours.  He finally went to his gastroenterologist ... several blood tests ruled out other maladies, but his celiac results are suspect.  He is scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy in 2 weeks.  He was told to eat "gluten free" until the tests!!!  I, and he know nothing about this "diet" much less how to navigate his in daily life!! The more I read, the more my head is spinning.  So I guess I have 2 questions.  First, I read on this website that prior to testing, eat gluten so as not to compromise the testing!  Is that true? His primary care doctor told him to eat gluten free prior to testing!  I'm so confused.  Second, I read that celiac disease is genetic or caused by other ways such as surgery.  No family history but Gall bladder removal 7 years ago, maybe?  But how in God's name does something like this crop up and now is so awful he can't go a day without worrying.  He still works in Manhattan and considers himself lucky if he gets there without incident!  Advice from those who know would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've done an excellent job of meticulously tracking the rash's unpredictable behavior, from its symmetrical spread and stubborn scabbing to the potential triggers you've identified, like the asthma medication and dietary changes. It's particularly telling that the rash seems to flare with wheat consumption, even though your initial blood test was negative—as you've noted, being off wheat before a test can sometimes lead to a false negative, and your description of the other symptoms—joint pain, brain fog, stomach issues—is very compelling. The symmetry of the rash is a crucial detail that often points toward an internal cause, such as an autoimmune response or a systemic reaction, rather than just an external irritant like a plant or mites. I hope your doctor tomorrow takes the time to listen carefully to all of this evidence you've gathered and works with you to find some real answers and effective relief. Don't be discouraged if the rash fluctuates; your detailed history is the most valuable tool you have for getting an accurate diagnosis.
    • Scott Adams
In this case the beer is excellent, but for those who are super sensitive it is likely better to go the full gluten-free beer route. Lakefront Brewery (another sponsor!) has good gluten-free beer made without any gluten ingredients.
    • trents
Welcome to the forum, @catsrlife! Celiac disease can be diagnosed without committing to a full-blown "gluten challenge" if you get a skin biopsy done during an active outbreak of dermatitis herpetiformis, assuming that is what is causing the rash. There is no other known cause for dermatitis herpetiformis so it is definitive for celiac disease. You would need to find a dermatologist who is familiar with doing the biopsy correctly, however. The samples need to be taken next to the pustules, not on them . . . a mistake many dermatologists make when biopsying for dermatitis herpetiformis.
