How Long Does It Take You To Get Over A Glutening?

I was just wondering if everyone could post a little bit about what happens when they get glutened........ I haven't been like this for a LONG time and I know I'm being a little baby here (for those of you who keep reading my reccent posts), but it's been 10 whole days and I'm not better yet! I used to think it only took about a week, but now it seems like it's going on forever, no matter what I do to speed up to process! But if you guys tell me that it sometimes take you this long to get over it , then I'll at least feel better knowing it's not some like bad bad thing that will never go away! (I know, I'm a total pesamist now, but when I'm sick, it's hard not to wonder 'what if') So any thoughts or advice. I'm not really new to this, but like I said, it has only happened two times in the past 8 or 9 months or so, so when I get this bad again, I get mad/scared/frustrated..........Thanks guys...........

I find the length of time differs from person to person. It also seems relevant in how severly it affects you. For me it takes a minimal amount to cause me to have DH and be terribly ill. I have been totally gluten-free

for almost a year. I miss eating turkey sandwiches but the pain and dh is not worth having any gluten. Unofrtunately I have been glute-ed by accident.

Hi Dani -

My response is almost exactly 12 hours later, and lasts a half-day to a day. SEvere D and cramping - it is fierce and miserable - but then I am fine by that night or the end of the day.

Am wondering if something else is going on with you? Can't imagine a glutening lasting that long, but, it IS different for everyone....

blessings.

Well, it for sure always lasts about a week. It's not just digestive things that I get though, it's disrupts my whole system....I get muscle aches, feels like I have black and blue marks all over my body, sore insides, pretty much everything hurts. It always last at least 7 days but I was just wondering if anyone knew of it lasting longer......This time was realllllly bad....and all of the body aches and everything, all the 'weird' symptoms are gone, but now I just have a weak digestive tract all over again.

Dani,

I am going through something similar right now and I don't even know what the culprit is/was! The low back pain and distention and joint aches and cracks are very bad! This has been over a week as well. If you continue to do better- I'd say it was the gluten. If not, you should probably check in with your doctor. Get well!

So far as measurable damage then best figure seems to be 4-6 WEEKS....

However that's all a bit relative....

Different symtoms seem to have different timescales and as said it differs p[erson to person BUT I'd also say it differs in a single person according to other health issues.

For me I have a short 1-2 hour delay before stage 1 which is fever and sweating ... and brain fog starts setting in.. then usually 4-6 hours later the cramps and D.... this then cycles for a week or more...

During this time the symptoms come and go.... sometimes I have C and sometimes D....and sometimes I feel otherwise OK.

Do you have a good gluten-free probiotic handy?

I find that if I need it to move along quicker, I start taking my probiotic in the morning and night and it shortens the recovery time by a few days. It helps me flush out the gunk in my digestive system

6 weeks for me to get back to feeling 'normal'.

Okay -- here's my issue right now -- it's been a week since the glutening and I'm mostly now dealing with extreme depression-type issues -- blowing small things out of proportion, feeling hypersensitive, feeling hopeless about problems, etc.....

The rest of the time, I'm fine.

Any temporary solutions for dealing with the depressive aftermath? I've been exercising, taking my supplements and getting rest. I'm trying not to let this topple me, but could use a leg up -- someone mentioned something recently about Relacore -- would that help?

Hi Dani--sorry you're still not feeling well :(

I start within about 2 hours with gas that progresses to D and nausea. This gets worse the next day or two. At this point, the anxiety, grouchiness and fatigue set in. This is the worst part.

It does take a while for me to feel completely better. Sometimes a week or more. During that time, I can go from feeling ok to not and back again. It's never an exact thing, and I notice that the longer I'm gluten-free, the more it varies.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.

I had no idea there is a "Louisville" in Colorado!😉 I thought it was a typo because I always think of the Kentucky city--but good luck!
