I Ordered My Enterolab Test....

Howdy,

I hope at least some of you remember me. Thanksgiving pushed me over the edge. Three days of foamy D later, I placed my order for Enterolab testing. Anyone that's followed my posts knows this is a big step for me, as I've been very much in denial.

Anyone experienced with Enterolab testing know how long it takes to get the stuff which which you

mail off your "poo" to them? :blink:

I look forward to learning if my dental enamel desintegration and gastro problems are indeed caused by Celiac. Jerry

It takes 2 or 3 days to get the kit. You have to send off the results on a Mon, Tues, or Wed and then it is almost exactly 2 weeks later that you will hear.

Well, the whole thing is a lot easier than it sounds. No big deal. My 8 year old did it without any help from me! The important thing is to tell everyone that no, that's NOT ice cream in the freezer!! I don't know why it has to look like a sherbert container!!!

I did a bit of a freak out realizing I had to freeze my poop! Then I had to take it to work with me and put it in the freezer until I could get to a DHL drop off location. I was so freaked out that someone might open my container in the freezer. Of course it was wrapped up well and stuck into bag, inside a bag. But still! I was SO happy to get that stupid thing into the DHL drop box.

Is it hard to get it picked up? Do you have to keep it frozen?? yucky! I live out in the country and

I don't even know if the carrier will come out there to pick it up....

I am worried that I will find out I have it. I admit I don't want to cope with the lifestyle changes I will have to engage in. However testing and confirmation is what will force me into compliance. Jerry

Jerry, I lived out in the country at the time. I know they'd pick up because Fed Ex and everyone else came out there, but I was going to be in town, so I dropped it off so I didn't have to wait for them. I just walked in and handed it to the lady at the desk, we didn't even need to discuss it ... everything was clearly labeled, and she had no way of knowing what it was.

You mention being afraid of the lifestyle changes .... are you worried you won't know what to do with your time when you're not spending it all in the bathroom? You could always put a recliner in the bathroom if you'll miss all the time you're spending in there now!! :lol:

Just kidding. You'll do fine. It becomes second nature.

Good for you! If you do discover that you are gluten intolerant, which it sounds like, you'll be so happy by how well you feel that you won't mind the lifestyle change.

What I will miss most is the sudden attacks of Diarrhea when I'm out running. Nothing like stomach cramps and a frantic scramble thru the underbrush by the side of the road, searching for some leaves(besides Poison Oak) and a secluded spot, to make you feel truly alive....

Ah, I know exactly how you feel. Unfortunately, I used to run on a path in the woods - but the path was very heavily traveled so I was always panicked that another runner or biker would come up upon me. I had MANY not so proud moments last summer - and more than one sweatband sacrified to the cause. :blink:

Thank YOU for reminding me of yet another BENEFIT that a gluten (and dairy, soy, yeast, almond, hazelnut) free lifestyle has brought me!

Of course I remember you! I'm glad you decided to get tested once and for all. We have to do things in our own time--and you knew when you were ready to know.

I've not had the pleasure of "going" in the bushes, but I know that very special feeling of--"if I don't get to the restroom NOW, it all over!" (literally :ph34r: )

Well, I was a boy scout and grew up out in the country. Bears go in the woods and so did we when we were out camping. However I don't like giving new meaning to the term "going for a run" :)

I'm sure it'll be there in a day or two. I ordered the gene testing kit recently, and it came in the regular mail (just a large envelope) and took over a week.

As far as not having symptoms now that you've sent for the kit, sounds a lot like when your tooth stops hurting when you're on your way to the dentist :lol:

So my cool whip container and shipping stuff came yesterday evening. Yaay, I am so looking forwards to

using it. Just like those Cialis commercials, I'll have to wait until "the time is right". I'm certainly not going to do this at work;)

OK, so seriously, I'm a little leery of Enterolab. I know they are not mainstream medicine. I see a few

threads here that talk about Celiac and question the validity of a stool test diagnoses. So, if this guy tells me I'm positive, do I base my entire life style, for the rest of my life, on this one guy's opinion?

Just thinking out loud here...and I certainly want to hear opinions on this subject.

no, you don't base your entire future lifestyle on "one guys opinion" base it on how you feel once you've gotten all gluten out of your system for a while and then accidentally or on purpose gluten yourself... (keeping in mind not everyone reacts all the time) but if you feel better gluten-free, then it is most likely the culprit, or at least part of it.

Well, it's a hard call. I tested positive ... I feel better gluten-free, so I took that as evidence that gluten-free worked for me. I did not test positive in any of the traditional celiac tests. Originally, I thought maybe I just caught it early so didn't have the damage. Now, it's more than likely that the gluten intolerance is a result of the Lyme Disease I was just diagnosed with .... will it go away when I healed of the Lyme? That's a good question, and I will defianately "challenge" it once I'm better. For me, maybe the Lyme "triggered" it, or maybe the gluten intolerance is a symptom of the Lyme, much like my other sensitivities.

I agree that you'll probably want to go with what your body tells you in the long run -- I spent a long time trying to think my way through whether I "believed" things or not, but I practically developed an anxiety disorder doing so. Now I'm certain I did the right thing because I honestly feel better than I ever have for most of my adult life -- and the marked contrast with my last known glutening sealed the deal for me.

I was afraid the DHL guy would see the Enterolab address and just know what was in the box.....

That is a valid question.  Unfortunately the short answer is slim to none.  Be proactive, when the diagnosis process is completed, start GFD.  Remember also that the western diet is deficient in many nutrients that governments require fortification.  Read the side of a breakfast cereal box. Anti-tTG antibodies has superseded older serological tests It has a strong sensitivity (99%) and specificity (>90%) for identifying celiac disease. A list of symptoms linked to Celiac is below.  No one seems to be tracking it, but I suspect that those with elevated ttg, but not diagnosed with Celiac Disease, are diagnosed with celiac disease many years later or just die, misdiagnosed.  Wheat has a very significant role in our economy and society.  And it is addictive.  Anti-tTG antibodies can be elevated without gluten intake in cases of other autoimmune diseases, certain infections, and inflammatory conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. Transient increases have been observed during infections such as Epstein-Barr virus.Some autoimmune disorders including hepatitis and biliary cirrhosis, gall bladder disease. Then, at 65 they are told you have Ciliac Disease. Milk protein has been connected to elevated levels.   Except for Ireland and New Zealand where almost all dairy cows are grass fed, commercial diaries feed cows TMR Total Mixed Rations which include hay, silage, grains and concentrate, protein supplements, vitamins and minerals, byproducts and feed additives. Up to 80% of their diet is food that cannot be eaten by humans. Byproducts of cotton seeds, citrus pulp, brewer’s grains (wheat and barley, rye, malt, candy waste, bakery waste. The wheat, barley and rye become molecules in the milk protein and can trigger tTg Iga in persons suseptible to Celiac. I can drink Grass fed milk, it tastes better, like the milk the milkman delivered in the 50's.  If I drink commercial or Organic milk at bedtime I wake with indigestion.

      I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods.       I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

      If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.
