Calling Kroger Shoppers

We got a gift card for Kroger's but we don't shop there. As I need a baked ham for NY day, I need to know if anyone who does shop there (and eats ham) knows if they offer a gluten free baked ham. I already had to scratch my first idea of getting one from Honeybaked - wheat starch right on the label. Ay ya ya............it never ends.

Kroger does have an 800 number, don't have it on me, and they are really quite knowledgeable and helpful. I have rarely, if ever, had any problems with Kroger brand stuff.

Don't know if this helps or not. We have a Kroger nearby but I went to another regional chain and wrote down the the brands that they carried then looked them up on the web and called a few. Of the ones I was able to get good info. on, Hillshire Farms explained their labeling practices and said they'd clearly state any wheat on labels. I'd feel comfortable purchasing their product. But have to say that I didn't go back and check the ingredients. It's one to keep am eye out for. I ended up purchasing a Harper's Country Ham. I tried to get info on Tyson and Carolia Pride but was unsuccessful.

Ham is very, very easy. If it doesn't list wheat, it's gluten-free. That really is all you need to know.

The spiral cut hams are a lot like honey baked, but they have a packet of glaze that has wheat in it. The ham is fine the glaze is not. So you just have to make your own glaze.

My Kroger carries Hormel Cure 81 ham which is gluten free. I baked it in an oven bag and made a very simple glaze. I was amazed at how easy it was and everyone liked it better than our traditional HoneyBaked!

Can you give us the recipe for your glaze? I would like to have a glaze recipe. Thanks for the information!

If you live in the south, you could probably just get some salt-cured ham. MUCH better than that "slimy" other stuff, in my opinion. I know the Kroger that I go to in Central KY has it...a holiday dinner must!

dragonmom, I would love your recipe for glaze! I have a gift certificate to honey baked hams but without the glaze, I don't like ham.

The glaze I used sounds almost too simple, but was sooo good - just mix 1-1/4 cups dark brown sugar with 1/4 dijon mustard. Here's how I prepped the ham:

Lightly score the ham in a diamond pattern.

Insert whole cloves in center of each diamond (optional). I didn't use them.

Place ham (cut side down) with 20-oz can of pineapple tidbits and juice in oven bag.

Set sealed bag in a foil-lined roasting pan and heat in 325 oven for about 1 hour.

Remove ham from bag, reserving pineapple and juice.

Place ham directly in foil-lined roasting pan and brush with prepared glaze.

(The glaze will naturally run downward as it heats, so I brush it extra thick on top.)

Continue to heat ham uncovered for 30 minutes.

Carve and serve, using reserved pineapple and juice to spoon over slices if desired.

The oven bag helps keep the ham moist, and lining the roasting pan with foil makes cleanup much easier as the glaze will permanently attach itself to the pan otherwise! Enjoy!!!

I found out Kroger has a spiral cut Brown Sugar Ham that is gluten free. That is what I'll use for NY day. It appears that the glaze is on this ham, yet it is still gluten free. If I find out otherwise after opening, I will make my own glaze - thanks for the recipe.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
