Hey guys,

I was diagnossed about 7 mths ago and i'm still struggling with the new diet  . Some days are really good and i hardly think about it and then i have a bad day and it feels like going back to square one :o .

I've been in NZ for about 15mths and found out i was celiac whilst i was over here and pretty much dealt with it on my own with a lot of help from the internet. The celiac NZ is a good resource and friends/colleagues try their best. I'm heading back to the UK for a holiday via Tokyo for two nights (should be interesting  ) and it will be an eye opener to see the differances and to see how my parents react to my new diet

This forum is so informative, i learn new things every time i come on here, who would have thought celiacs would have to deal with so much. So many of my symptoms/illnesses from my past make sense now!

I've just realised recently that cosmetics are making my skin really itchy, does anyone know of any products in NZ which are gluten-free? I'm using Treseme and clinque at the moment and i'm sure they aren't gluten-free.

Anyway it will be good to hear from New Zealanders and their experiences, tips, brands they use etc, cheers Julie

I don't know much about cosmetics but I tend to get dandruff a lot. Could this have something to do with the shampoo or conditioner I use? I looked at the label and its just all these chemical names which mean nothing to me! I have been using dove and panteen and selsun blue and nizarol in a attempt to find one that works for me. Do you know anything about this?

I was being glutened by my makeup and had to change. I now use Mineral Makeup from JR Minerals in Victoria and love it! Its mailorder and yes they ship overseas ... Open Original Shared Link This company does skin care and shampoo etc - all gluten-free. Open Original Shared Link I found my talc powder was glutening me but I am extra sensitive. I have just started using the talc and deoderant and its lovely. I also ordered the shampoo and conditioner so will let you know on that

Thanks I'll look in to that! Can we be glutend by just touching gluten containing food products or do we only get glutened by products that we absorb? Just a little confused!

Hi nzgirl

I'm not sure if we can be glutened by just touching gluten products, but I know cooking with flour will make me sick. I love cooking, so I will just have to stop treating my family, and cook them gluten-free stuff. I'm not sure whether it is because I am breathing in the flour, or whether it is being absorbed, but I think it is more like being breathed in.

I was definately glutened by my old makeup. I don't wear it every day - so it was easy to track down the culprit. I still feed my horses with wheat hay without gloves but am careful to wash my hands immediately after. I threw out all normal flour so I would never be tempted to cook 'normal' food for my family again - as I was glutened by just cooking with it - flour dust I suppose. I have even heard of people getting Dermatitis Herpetiformis on their feet by using a shampoo with wheat in it - as the suds fall down to their feet - they get glutened..

Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?

Celiac disease is the most likely cause, but here are articles about the other possible causes:
