I am Starting this journey and was wondering if there are some good books out there?

There seem to be a lot. But which have you found the most helpful?

Thanks

Jyn

Ive skipped through a few.... but what I'd say is its like everything else.... don't take everything to be "gospel" even if its the gluten-free bible :D ... knowledge about celiac disease get better and labelling gets better etc.

When I was at uni I was taught that textbooks are on the whole useless for actually understanding any scientific subject because by the time they are published they are already out of date... the guy who told us this actually had written quite a few textbooks himself so ...

I think lots of them give you a good a background... but that if you really want to keep up on it (and unless you are VERY VERY lucky your MD or gastro is unlikely to do this) then you need to get a good base understanding and read the actual medical pages and journals yourself.... obviously you can't run before you can walk.... so I'm certainly not saying this should be your first stop .... all I'm saying is lots of good books exist and ALL of them have errors, ommisions and are out of date.

So long as you bear that in mind then I'm sure many people have favorites... and many of these will really help you get a basic grasp.

This board is more informative than all the books I've picked up combined. You can find answers to just about anything here.

I completely agree. Save your money that you'd spend on books and start reading and asking questions on here...it's been the BEST source of information, and equally important, support, I could have hoped to find. Welcome to our (sometimes crazy!) group!

I agree that this board is the absolute best source of Celiac Disease information. :)

There are 2 books that I will recommend to you, though, since you asked. "Wheat Free Worry Free" by Dana Korn is a very good book for someone brand new to the gluten-free lifestyle.

The other is "Celiac Disease a Hidden Epidemic" by Peter H.R. Green, M.D. and Rory Jones.

Gluten Free for Dummies is a really good starting point for some basic information as well as a few recipes. If you're a picky eater, I would recommend the Incredible Edible Gluten Free Food For Kids by Shari L. Sanderson as your first cookbook. They are very simple, yet tasty, recipes. Also, the Bette Hagman books are awesome cookbooks.

I also agree that Dr. Green's book is the best resource out there. LOVE IT.

Hello, I was very stick,  with flu like symptoms, but my virus panel came back negative and we couldn’t figure out what’s going on. The doctor then added a celiac panel.  Has anyone ever had such a dramatic change?  What are the odds this is true celiac I am going to have an endoscopy, but it’s expensive and I just feel like why can’t the labs be enough?

Eating out in general is full of risks, but this article may help:

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?
