I attended a Celiac conference today and the doctor from MacMaster Hospital and the nurtitionist (Shelley Case) both said that the gluten molecules are too large to penetrate the skin so moisturizers, shampoos, etc. are fine. The only thing they said to watch for was gluten in lipstick.

I was surprised to hear this. After everything I read on this forum, I pitched my "hydrolyzed wheat protein" items for "gluten and wheat free"....

Thoughts?

My daughter isn't celiac but has allergies to both wheat and gluten. She reacts very badly to anything with wheat of gluten used externally. I would also think if you had celiac it would be all too easy to use a moisturizer or shampoo then not get it fully rinsed from your hands. You cuold then transfer this to your mouth. I would avoid such things. It just isn't worth the risk.

Seventh Generation Maxi pads. Who woulda thunk it? I never would have known had I not been bored while in the bathroom and picked up the package to read it. The absorbant material is made of wheat! Must remember this as daughter has a wheat allergy.

toothpaste... When I was first diagnosed, Aim toothpaste was the culprit. Who would have thought?

Some of the new calcium added orange juice or other OJ that they process into something special can catch you unaware.

Casa Ole uses flour in their refried beans (definintely not true Mexican food!)

and I've found a bit of flour tortilla in my corn tortilla chips several times. I don't get those at restaurants any more -- even if they say they should be safe.

Tropicana OJ isn't safe?

I drink it, and to my knowledge it's never made me sick. But I'm usually VERY sensitive.

I'll stop drinking it, if it's not safe, I don't want to press my luck.

Does anyone know for sure?

Only Tropicana's 100% Juice is safe. Any others are not safe. I am very sensitive as well. I get violently ill if I ingest a microscopic speck of gluten. I am paranoid careful!

Some things you also would not expect it to be in are:

Pringles Potato Chips (Wheat is in there!) :(

Kellogg's Rice Krispies (Barley Malt)

Any Georgia-Pacific Toilet Paper (Angel Soft) or Paper Towels (Mardi Gras) have gluten in the adhesive at the end of the roll. Do not use the last piece or two!

Amy's Kitchen - CC issues have made others on the forum ill.

Lay's - Stax are safe, because they are made in a dedicated facility, but not the kind in bags.

Yogurt - Dannon (The only ones that are safe are the plain regular, low-fat, and fat-free.)

Tortilla Chips - Some brands have wheat flour in them. Certain brands such as On The Border have safe plain restaurant style tortilla chips, but flavors like guacamole have wheat.

Play-Doh - Children love this stuff, but it can make Celiac kids sick.

Cosmetics - Many are not safe. Bonne Bell Original Lip Smackers contain wheat. Face powders can make you ill and if you accidentally breathe it in, the reaction may be quicker.

Envelopes and Stamps - pretty much every kind has gluten in the adhesive.

I have to second the fish food. I just randomly read the label one morning thinking it would be safe and it was the third or fourth ingredient. Isn't it interesting that the government gives more subsidies to grain farmers than fruit and veggie farmers (atleast in the good ol' US of A)? Hmmm........ a conspiracy? :P

I must have the double wheat fish food.... Ours has Wheat flour, Wheat germ meal, Rolled oats and Wheat gluten meal. Both of the brands we have contain 3 or 4 wheat ingredients.

Just noticed, MSG is gluten free in the US, in China is it wheat based? Crap, this is why it's so difficult for everyone.

Hidden Valley Ranch- used to be gluten-free

some shredded cheeses- to prevent caking

"mesquite" and other smoked flavorings

bleu cheese- it's grown on bread

Lawry's season salt

some spices

cornbread

meat or veggies that've been marinated

sauteed mushrooms at restaurants- Outback uses soy sauce

some vodkas, most whiskey, bourbon, gin, beer

vanilla flavoring- the alcohol

That is weird! I get super sick from Lays stax, even though they say gluten-free right on the label, but I haven't gotten sick from the bagged Lay's. I had just thought the stax might have CC, I didn't know they had a dedicated facility. Guess I need to investigate the extra ingredients in the stax and find out what's up. <_<

I get sick from lays staxx to but i dont think it is a gluten reaction, I think its one of the oils that they use that make me have stomach pains and D. I do get glutened from lays chips tho. But last night i tried the lays kettle chips and i was fine.

Wallpaper glue has wheat starch in it. I was cleaning my son's bedroom walls and scrubbing the residue off the walls after I had removed his border and was very sick afterward.

I know what you mean. The oil is a likely possibility. I only got the unflavored ones. I have trouble due to the oil because I had my gallbladder out. Fats in general need limited. I ate a half a tube today, and I am hoping I will not suffer for it!

Does anyone know about water softener tablets? They're supposed to be salt, but do they put gluten in as a binder?

I had a water softener for years in Michigan and I used different brands of salt, was never glutened by it.

You can always call the company to be sure. Salt should be 100% salt.

      Get tested for vitamin deficiencies.  Though neuropathy can be a symptom of celiac, it can also be caused by deficiencies due to poor digestion caused by celiac and could be easier to treat.

      Thank you so much for your response  Yes it seems as though things get very painful as time goes on.  I'm not eating gluten as far as I know.  However, I'm not sure of cross contamination.  My system seems to weaken to hidden spices and other possibilities. ???  if cross contamination is possible...I am in a super sensitive mode of celiac disease.. Neuropathy from head to toes

      EXACTLY! I was asked yesterday on my LAST video call with Standford and I stated exactly yes absolutely this is why I need the name! One, get proper care, two, not get worse.Im falling apart, stressed out, in pain and just opened email from Stanford stating I was rude ect.I want that video reviewed by higher ups and see if that women still has a job or not.Im saying this because I've been medically screwed and asking for help because bills don't pay itself. This could be malpratice siit but im not good at finding lawyers

      We feel your pain. It took me 20+ years of regularly going to doctors desperate for answers only to be told there was nothing wrong with me … when I was 20 pounds underweight, suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, and in a great deal of pain. I had to figure it out for myself. If you're in the U.S., not having an official diagnosis does mean you can't claim a tax deduction for the extra expense of gluten-free foods. But it can also be a good thing. Pre-existing conditions might be a reason why a health insurance company might reject your application or charge you more money. No official diagnosis means you don't have a pre-existing condition. I really hope you don't live in the U.S. and don't have these challenges. Do you need an official diagnosis for a specific reason? Else, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're diligent in remaining gluten free, your body should be healing as much as possible so there isn't much else you could do anyway. And there are plenty of us out here who never got that official diagnosis because we couldn't eat enough gluten to get tested. Now that the IL-2 test is available, I suppose I could take it, but I don't feel the need. Someone else not believing me really isn't my problem as long as I can stay in control of my own food.

      If you're just starting out in being gluten free, I would expect it to take months before you learned enough about hidden sources of gluten before you stopped making major mistakes. Ice cream? Not safe unless they say it is gluten free. Spaghetti sauce? Not safe unless is says gluten-free. Natural ingredients? Who knows what's in there. You pretty much need to cook with whole ingredients yourself to avoid it completely. Most gluten-free products should be safe, but while you're in the hypersensitive phase right after going gluten free, you may notice that when something like a microwave meal seems to not be gluten-free … then you find out that it is produced in a shared facility where it can become contaminated. My reactions were much-more severe after going gluten free. The analogy that I use is that you had a whole army of soldiers waiting for some gluten to attack, and now that you took away their target, when the stragglers from the gluten army accidentally wander onto the battlefield, you still have your entire army going out and attacking them. Expect it to take two years before all of the training facilities that were producing your soldiers have fallen into disrepair and are no longer producing soldiers. But that is two years after you stop accidentally glutening yourself. Every time you do eat gluten, another training facility can be built and more soldiers will be waiting to attack. Good luck figuring things out.
