What Made Me Sick?

I need your help here guys! I've been scouring my memory trying to work out what is making me sick and was wondering if anyone had any insight into things.

Had lunch at about 2pm. By 2:15pm was dizzy, extremely tired, and my stomach started cramping. Sounds like a glutening to me! (What are other people's immediate symptoms).

Today I have eaten (bear in mind I'm in the UK)

Banana

Apple

Gluten Free cereal (Nature's Path Mesa Sunrise Flakes) + soya milk

Jacket potato from cafe around the corner with lettuce, rocket, gruyere cheese & heinz salad cream

Alpro Soya chocolate shake - I checked the ingredients and it seemed ok!

I can't work it out! Usually I can trace it back to one (evil) piece of food!

That is a tough one. There are 3 things I see that are suspect. 1. Soy milk on your cereal - In the US, soy milk often has traces of gluten and here it is disclosed on the label. 2. Gruyere is not gluten free? 3. Heinz Salad Cream.

I've also run across a few places that sprinkle flour and other stuff on their potatoes to get them to crisp up. You might want to ask your local cafe how they prepare their potatoes.

For you US folks out there a Jacket Potato is a baked potato and Rocket is lettuce like Arugula.

Hope you figure it out.

Did you check the ingredients of the salad dressing? Is this the way you react to gluten?

Other than that, you may be noticing now an intolerance to either casein or soy. Sometimes other intolerances become noticeable after one is gluten-free for a bit. But if you've been having casein and soy without problems recently, it probably isn't that.

Or it could be a stomach bug or food poisoning unrelated to any food intolerance.

Sorry you feel bad. If you continue to have symptoms you can't trace to gluten, start a food diary and see if you notice any patterns.

Hmm - I can't work out what it was - one of those things I guess. I never have salad dressing, and I don't think soya is a problem. Ho hum!

I promise I won't post on here every time I get glutened - I'm new!

OK, I'm confused. What is salad cream then? I took a guess that it was what we in the US call salad dressing. I guess not :rolleyes:

I would suspect the salad dressing - sometimes there is hidden gluten in them -

but what about the jacket potato - was there any seasonings on them?? Sometimes there is gluten in seasonings, or perhaps msg in the seasonings, did it taste real salty?? Herbs are usually okay, but store bought seasonings can be suspect with hidden gluten.

I feel for you today, I don't know what I got into but I have had a "tuff" day too...I know tomorrow with be a killer.

I'm thinking something was cross contaminated. I have been having some difficulties with that lately, myself. Even fresh fruit, depending on where it came from, may have been near something with flour or crumbs.

Or the potato, maybe, from the cafe? If it was prepared there, and anything with wheat was near it, there is the potential for contamination.

Sometimes I get glutened and really never find out exactly where it came from! :(

How can you tell the batch you have? This is my favorite cold cereal. I looked at what I have and there are no batch numbers anywhere I can see.

The notice raised more questions than it answers. Are all batches tested at some point & this one failed? Or what this a random catch? The first time the cereal has been tested?

If one batch has problems, that would indicate a quality control problem, wouldn't it? I emailed the company with my questions. I'll let you all know if I hear something back.

I was also disturbed when, carefully examining the bag to find the nonexistent batch number, I saw that they say it may contain traces of soy. I guess I was just relying on the gluten-free label, having started on this cereal before I found out I was soy intolerant.

Looks like I need to come up with some other breakfasts. I have Bob's Red Mill gluten-free hot cereal, but it isn't as if I want that every day. I guess I need to bake myself something nice this afternoon.

Followup information from Nature's Path about Mesa Sunrise cereal (boy, did they get back to me quickly :o ):

"Thank you for your email.

This is currently only isolated to Mesa Sunrise product in the UK with the code date of 12MAY07 to 14MAY07. It is different cereal then that made for the U.S. market.

The batch # is the same as the freshness date located on the back of the bag upper right hand corner.

We do make other cereals that contain gluten. However, our strict production schedules and quality assurance methods ensure that the least allergenic foods are produced first. The products that contain gluten, soy and finally nuts are made and then the entire line is cleaned and the process re-starts. The equipment is periodically inspected & tested for gluten contamination.

At Nature's Path we have an extensive planning and cleaning schedule for all our production facilities in order to prevent any cross contamination of our products with non-declared ingredients. All of our products that do not contain nuts or soy or dairy

Hmmm.... I think it is a GREAT idea if you DO post here every time you get glutened! That way, we can all learn from each other. I have learned so much by reading about others mistakes - and I have made plenty myself.

So keep posting, and I hope you are feeling better!

      He’s noticed it after having a few different kinds of nuts and nuts on top of a gluten free nut bar. and it’s happened after having some fresh caught fish, and tonight from packaged plain salmon from the supermarket. He has stomach cramps and feels the need to vomit to try and relieve the symptoms.

      Welcome to the forum, @Celiacpartner! Does this happen with all nuts and all fish or just certain kinds? And are we talking about products that are advertised as gluten-free eaten at home or things served in a restaurant?

      Hello. My husband was diagnosed with celiac disease 30yrs ago. He has a gluten free diet, with the odd bit of contamination when eating out or eating something that says may contain, which he probably shouldn’t but he seems to tolerate his diet ok. The last few times he has eaten fish and larger servings of nuts he has noticed stomach pains like he used to get when he eats gluten. After 30yrs of getting it right and knowing what he can and can’t have with essentially no major instances, this has thrown us. Could this be a new intolerance or an allergy and has it happened to anyone else after so many years? thanks

      My reaction to a gluten bolus exposure is similar to yours, with 2-3 hours of severe abdominal cramps and intractable emesis followed by several hours of diarrhea. I don't necessarily equate that one large exposure to gluten with significant intestinal lining damage, however. I think it's just a violent reaction to a what the body perceives to be a somewhat toxic substance that I am no longer tolerant of because I have quit exposing myself to it regularly. It's just the body purging itself of it rather than an expression of significant damage. Before diagnosis, when I was consuming gluten daily, I had little to no GI distress. I was, for the most part, a "silent celiac". The damage to my small bowel lining didn't happen all at once but was slow and insidious, accumulating over a period of years. The last time I got a big shot of gluten was about three years ago when I got my wife's wheat biscuits mixed up with my gluten-free ones. There was this acute reaction after about two hours of ingestion as I described above. I felt washed out for a few days and fully recovered within a week or so.  Now, I'm a 74-year-old male. So, I'm not worried about being pregnant. And I don't want to contradict your physicians advice. But I just don't think you have done significant damage to your small bowel lining by one episode of significant gluten ingestion. I just don't think it works that way.
