I am sort of interested in attending this, but does anyone have any idea why it's so expensive? Do we get to eat the food? 50.00 bucks sounds really steep to go watch a bunch of people cook! Am I missing something?

I want to go too! I know our favorite store is giving the food. I think it would be a lot of fun.

I do think it would be cool to see what they come up with... but 50 bucks?

Perhaps they should let Celiacs in free?

Also the idea that there are 10 doctors in the Philly Area that know about Celiac is Amazing! :P

I had mentioned this John awhile ago when I saw it in Washington, and I told him I wanted to go to the Philly one. We will be in Washington DC this weekend cause I have an oncology conference but I should be able to convince him to travel again. I think we get to eat all the food there. I better get some food out of the deal, for 50 bucks.

That weekend I'm actually going to be up north, so If i go i drive up there, drive down to philly, then drive up there, then drive back to Camp Hill.

Fun! But I have a GP appointment on monday up there, so it will be spaced out.

I read the info from the website. It appears that for $50.00 you get to watch & cheer on your favorite doctors or area chefs. Get a cookbook & that's it.

I did e-mail the group to ask if any gluten-free food would be available for the attendees.... I'll post my findings as soon as I hear from them....

It looks like a fundraiser for the group.....

mamaw is correct. This event is a fundraiser and the attendess they really want there are doctors. They figure that people with Celiac already know way more about Celiac and gluten free food than most doctors, of any discipline. One of my own knucklehead ex docs told me flat out 'you know all the food you love, well you can't have any of it on the gluten-free diet and who would want that?' They think we can't follow the diet and that fact may be keeping some of them from even testing for it. Part of the money raised from the cooking sprees goes to the hospital of the winning dr. to start an awareness campaign, and some to the support group in that area. The VIP tix that are $100 get you some food and some Redbridge beer as far as I know.

I'm in charge of getting the docs signed up for Atlanta. I have four booked and need 6 more. If anyone reading this knows a doc affiliated with Grady - I'd greatly appreciated their contact info. The Atlanta event is at the Hyatt Regency downtown, on Oct. 27th.

This is the relpy I received today

Thank you for your interest in the NFCA Philadelphia Cooking Spree. The event is June 23 at the Hyatt Regency Penn's Landing from 7-10pm. The VIP admission is $100 and includes a copy of "Beyond Rice Cakes" and also a meet and greet session with the chefs and doctors as they prepare to cook before the event. The general admission is $50 and children are $35. There will be plenty of food for all to try, along with the new gluten free Redbridge Beer. This is a very fun event and a chance to meet other celiacs in your area. Heidi Collins, CNN anchor and National Spokesperson for NFCA will speak. For more information and to register, please go to Open Original Shared Link.

Once again, thank you so much for your interest. Please contact me if you have any more questions.

Thank you for contacting the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness with your question. We hope you continue to stay in touch with us as we discover new information almost daily about celiac disease. With your support, we will find a cure.

I'm so glad you posted...MY QUESTION IS............WHEN THE FOOD IS SERVED, ARE THE INGRED ON LITTLE CARDS ON THE FOOD?

SINCE I CAN'T HAVE DAIRY, CASEIN, SOY & TAPIOCA--HOW WILL I KNOW THE gluten-free FOOD IS SAFE.

ANOTHER FORUM SAID THE APPITIZERS ARE 'HEAVY' AND LEAVE ROOM FOR THE MAIN DISHES.

THIS WILL DETERMINE WHETHER I GO OR NOT.

We might be going, and I know my gluten free buddy and her husband are also interested. It would be nice to meet some people there.

SunnyDyRain Enthusiast

I may be tempted to go also... now that it seems worth it.. espically with the drive.

I would be worried about dairy also....so ingredients on cards would be nice.

blueeyedmanda Community Regular

It sounds like it might be alot of fun, think of all the neat people we would meet too. People who have celiac and understand what we are going through and the struggles you have when you first start out.

mamaw Community Regular

I know I will not be attending because of my poor health at the present time...plus I live near Pittsburgh so I would need to add the cost of an overnight stay ,gas at $3 bucks a gallon . It does sound like alot of fun & of course to meet others too......

I don't know about the recipe cards as that was not addressed in the feed-back I received from them in my previous post.....

hope you have fun ..

I won't be going, I decided against it for monetary and food problems. With me being sick and not knowing and not really having the money and the Drive to philly with gas prices and well.. i'm a little bit of a stick in the mud when i'm not feeling right. why else would I be surfing celiac.com at 11pm on friday night when the rest of my generation is out drinking and dancing (and doing god knows what!)

I am in that generation and we are home every friday night. We are also sticks in the mud...and proud of it!

SunnyDyRain Enthusiast

Heh, well at least you both are stick in the muds! My b/f is out with his friends from highschool getting drunk, like they do every other friday night. I got my parents..wait they were in bed by 10...

I sometimes feel like the oldest 26 year old on the planet.

John is unable to drink, just a shot will throw him into a sickness that can last for days. He had high doses of potent chemo 6 years ago, and his liver took a hit. If he was to drink regularly he would need a transplant within 10 years. I was never much of a drinker. I did it in highschool on the railroad tracks, and in the woods by the river. I outgrew the partying years ago.

Another reason to stay home is everything is so expensive, for two of us to go to the movies it is almost 17 for both tickets. Yikes!

John is already half asleep on the couch. We finished watching Norbit 30 minutes ago.

Wow, sounds like john went through some stuff. Glad that your both healthy today.

I drank all though high school, I agree it has gotten very old... but why.. other people still have fun with it.. do i not do it right? I have a taste for ammoretto sours.. but 2 of them and i'm loopy and sleepy. I agree it's really expensive for movies, but thankfully, we don't find many movies we need to see in the theaters. Last one was pirates... the one before that was miami vice? Unless you count Happy Feet in Imax. Ohh speaking of happy feet, June 30th there is a free showing of happy feet at Levitt Pavillion in Harrisburg! I guess they do alot of free stuff there...

Jeff is younger and less mature than me. He is 1.5 years younger, and had yet to leave his parents nest. Everyweekend when we go home, his mom does all his laundry for him and irons his shirts and cooks him food... Gah. just thinking of that makes me sick. On top of all that, his friends are younger than him, some are still in college! Hanging out with them is like the simpsons meet family guy meeting super troopers. Jeff will be a great man someday, when he gets done growing up.

HI --- I am just learning to respond to this group, so I am sorry that this is a late reply. I have attended this event in both NY and DC (I have children in both cities) and it was alot of fun. You get to meet so many people from your area with celiac. There is so much food to try along with what the chefs and doctors are creating. If you drink, there is also free Redbridge beer, and if not there are sodas and water. My husband, who is not celiac, had a fantastic time talking to the other guests and learning of their stories. This event is one where everyone is upbeat and having a great time - no complaining about being celiac. Money from the evening is used to raise celiac awareness in the community.

Wishing you good health and happiness.

These look great!  I follow several people who frequently post gluten-free recipes online (plus they sell their cookbooks). "Gluten Free on a Shoestring" and "Erin's Meaningful Eats>"

Sounds great, we also have lots of recipes here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/gluten-free-recipes/

When I had to go gluten-free, the rest of my family still ate gluten. They still eat regular bread products and crackers, but there are no other gluten-containing foods in the house. I bought a separate toaster that is only used for gluten-free products, and thoroughly cleaned all cookware, dishes and surfaces. We do have to be very careful with cross-contact, for instance when someone else is making a sandwich with wheat bread. Then I went through my cupboards and pantry, I set aside everything else with gluten and gave it away - flour and baking mixes, pasta, etc. So when I cook any recipe that calls for flour (perhaps for thickening) or bread crumbs like Panko, I only use gluten-free. My cupboard now holds gluten-free baking flour, tapioca flour, rice flour, almond flour, gluten-free oats, gluten-free grits, gluten-free cornmeal, and a few gluten-free baking mixes for occasional use. On the odd occasion when we have pasta, it is gluten-free - nobody notices the difference in the "new" lasagna. I have found several good recipes that are gluten-free and everyone loves them. A family favorite is the Tarta de Santiago, a naturally gluten-free treat made with almond flour.

This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
    • Scott Adams
Exactly, everyone with celiac disease technically has an "intolerance" to these: Wheat: The prolamin is called gliadin. Barley: The prolamin is called hordein. Rye: The prolamin is called secalin. Around 9% of celiacs also should avoid oats (but around the time of diagnosis this may be much higher--some will have temporary intolerance): Oats: The prolamin is called avenin. I had to avoid this for 1-2 years after my diagnosis until my gut healed: Corn: The prolamin is called zein. Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.
