Fatigue Is Back With A Vengeance

With efforts, I write this post. The fatigue is back big time.

I do have to admit that I do not have much of an appetite and have not in many years. I cook well and explore some great dinners. I can cook some drop dead dinners and I will eat that. But day to day, there is no desire to eat. No, I am not anorexic.

I have been cooking for an elderly friend in her house and toting my pot and pans to her house to cook the meals for two weeks now. Maybe a little stress involved here. But, I am just draggin.

How and what fuels do I need to consume to feel better. Iron fuels, like broccoli.....?

I do think another blood panel is due. Sorry, a little soup cry.

I'm very sorry you're not feeling up to snuff! You have been so helpful to me in the past I am wishing I had some great suggestions. In terms of foods to "beef you up"- do you eat beef? Then I would recommend my Mom's old stand-by- liver! Chicken livers are pretty tasty actually and very high in iron. I also think brazil nuts are good as well as molasses. (old-fashioned remedies) A blood test wouldn't be a bad idea. (I am thinking the same...) Salmon is rich in calcium and many other good things; I eat it a lot. I always buy it fresh, not in the can, hopefully, in N. Carolina you can find it this way as well. I hope you feel better very soon!

There are so many causes of fatigue.

So just one idea: what about beefing up your regime to eliminate toxins? Like more water, probiotics, activated carbon to absorb toxins in your intestine. If you are dealing with the big C instead of the big D--a little extra help so you are eliminating every day?

Also in the heat, electrolyte depletion perhaps?? So a sports drink maybe or your own mixture?

I've no great ideas I'm afraid Lisa as my hubby suffers the same thing (fatigue/lack of appetite) most of the time. :rolleyes:

Just checking the obvious - anaemia/hypothyroid been crossed off the list???

Lisa (Nikki, too), I take NT Factor for fatigue and it's really helped. I get it from my doctor so I can get the full-strength stuff. Google it and read about it.

Must be fatigue week on the boards. I have not had an appetite since I cut gluten, but I have never felt like it was a huge effort to drag myself across the room to the computer. To make matters even worse, when I do lie down, there is no sleep. And when I finally fall asleep, staying that was does not happen on the best of nights. Add to that the fact that I can no longer sit in the summer heat without a sweater, and the hubby likes the air on at night, and we have a major issue.

So while I cannot help at all, you have my sympathy. I know how you feel.

I am sorry you are not feeling well. If are eating well, and you are having time to rest, please make sure your doctor order some blood work. It only takes a couple of minutes, and you will get lots of answers. I hope and pary you get your energy back. Your are an incredible person.

It is 99 out today, and I am wearing my fluffy red sweater like a dork.

Thyroid levels were checked, and came back just fine.

Edited to include:

A notable factor in my cold naturedness is that it started when I cut gluten from my diet, has gotten worse over time, along with very dry mouth and throat and itchy red eyes. But when I do overheat, it takes hours to cool off, and usually a very cold bath and bed rest under a fan.

I am going to have to jump right in here. I can't stand the fatigue. Sometimes my eyes just want to close, so I will go and lie down and wind up staring at the ceiling...why can't I sleep?? I also have very sore muscles though, is this a vitamin deficiency?

Fatigue can very much be from deficiencies. B-12 injection or sublinual can be very helpful.

Avoid stress, for me, it puts me right onto the sofa for days.

Before my Celiac diagnosis, I had this problem and read somewhere that kelp would halp it. I started taking kelp supplements and it did help. All kelp supplements do is provide iodine for your thyroid. However, my thyroid always tests normal.

Since going gluten-free, I haven't had this problem and don't have to take kelp. I can only assume that I'm absorbing iodine from my food now.

Also, I use B-12 Blast drops from Bricker Labs (get it at Whole Foods) for an extra boost on B-12 and Folic Acid. I tend to run low on these and that makes me draggy.

If you are cold, please don't take any kelp-- it will just make you colder. Either go see an acupuncturist or for a simple but "not really having a diagnosis"-- look into ginseng. Chinese ginseng is the most warming, but all (American or Korean) will add some energy back into you. I hope your energy returns soon, you're important.

I suspect it depends on why you are cold. Pre-diagnosis, every time I backed off of the kelp, I got freezing spells where I couldn't warm up unless I had soup or some such. That was a few years ago when I didn't know I had Celiac and wasn't absorbing my nutrients, now I no longer need it. But I really was glad it worked for me when I was experiencing the cold spells.

I have heard of using ginseng tea to warm up and ginger tea too but I've always wondered if it was the hot tea or the herb in it that does the job.

I think alot has to do with stress. I have taken on the role of a caregiver and managing two homes. That certainly is not an easy job. I'm just plumb worn out.

I'm going to start with Folic suppliments and hope that will help a little, in addition to the b-12 and daily vit.

I have always thought it would be wonderful if we only had to eat overy other day. If I could just cook 3 or 4 times a week I would be happy. This 3 times a day thing is tedious and boring. I have young kids and I know that it's hard to be the one watching out for others nutrition as well as your own. As far as being tired, I always feel better when I cut out any sugar and/or processed foods. Chicken soup makes me and my intestines feel much better. And although you may not feel like it, being out in nature and out the in the sun (careful not to burn!) going for a walk always helps me sleep better at night.

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.
