For Those Who Bake Their Own Bread

I bake my own bread most of the time ( Amy's Bread Mix ) and it slices well, except I cannot slice evenly and equally. I've tried an electric knife and a serrated knife. Does anyone use some kind of bread slicer that works well----- I'm looking for uniformity with minimal effort. :) .

Your posts made me laugh! My Dad used to be able to slice bread like a machine! He's gone now but you brought back fond memories... He would tell me I couldn't cut anything even!!!! And I can't....

I have a inexpensive knife that has a guide on it, it can be used for bread or meats. It can be adjusted to the desired thickness.. I think I paid $14.00 for it & then I seen them at a drug store after a holiday & I bought another for $4.99.... If you look at a place like Linens & Things or Bed, Bath & Beyond I think they will have some thing. Some are like a bread box where you place the whole loaf in & there are slots to cut down thru the bread. This type is more expensive...A kitchen store would also be a good place to look....maybe even try google search....

I bake Gluten Free Pantry French Bread regularly--it's the one gluten-free bread I can tolerate and I actually enjoy it.

Every time I slice a new loaf to freeze it, I wonder if there is a slicer I could get so that I can have nice, even slices. I always get the too thick ones and then the ones that start out normal, but get thin at the end (those burn in the toaster :angry: ).

Mamaw--my dad slices like a machine, too. Perfect every time! :)

I may look for a knife with a spacer--that sounds like a great idea.

I had one of these knives prior to going gluten-free (sadly, I gave it away, since I couldn't be sure crumbs weren't hiding in it), and really liked it. I may have to get another cuz I have the worst time cutting a straight slice. Open Original Shared Link

The plastic case was broken, but I didn't want to use it anyway. I slice my bread in there everytime. It is starting to get torn up, though because i use it so much. So, soon I am getting this one:

I like the wooden bottom. It won't tear up as much as the plastic one. I just use a regular bread knife. The guide is the trick, not the knife.

Do those of you who bake bread use a bread machine? We were thinking of buying one but I was concerned if the gluten free flours would pose a challenge.

I use my Breadman Ultimate bread machine to make Pamela's Wheat Free Bread . It does fine. I just put the mix in as instructed--- then turn it on a regular cycle, let it mix well for a few minutes, scraping the sides down. Then I turn the whole machine off, unplug it, (pat the dough into a loaf shape)-- let the bread rise for an hour (or more) -- turn the machine back on to "BAKE ONLY" set at 350 degrees for about 60 minutes.

I do have to "babysit" it , so to speak - to bake this way, although my machine would let me program it to do this without my "help"--- ( I just never went to the trouble to program it) :)

Thanks for the info. I've been looking at the Norpro bread slicer also. And am leaning towards buying one. :)

I mostly use "Bread by Anna" (Formerly Manna by Anna?). I don't use the breadmaker anymore because I get better shape and rise in the oven.

I can't slice anything even either. So my husband bought me a deli-slicer (expensive), but it works great and he uses it for meats and cheeses too.

It's a "Deni" brand. I got it through Costco.com who's prices are always better than other retail. The reason we got that one is because it will go as wide as 1" slice which is good for steak. Others can do just fine for bread alone, but might as well get multiple uses out of the thing.

He slices the bread for me every Sunday when I bake a loaf and he sets it at a "12" which is a bit thin, but the bread still holds together. Just make sure it is completely cooled before slicing or it will either fall apart or stick to the blade.

I have been searching for a good way to slice my bread, even searched under bread slicers and never found anything I wanted or could afford. I have a knife and the platic guide, but only have marginal success with that.

I have no idea where I can put yet another kitchen appliance as I have the tiniest kitchen. Between the foodsaver, stand mixer and toaster oven, my gluten free appliances are taking over.

I like the idea that it is useful for more than one purpose.

My husband is going to kill me lol.

      Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

      I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

      Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
