What are some good healthy fat sources?

So I think I've asked this before, but i am finding I have sensitivity to nuts and seeds. Almonds are O.K for me if I only have a few and I am staying away from dairy- milk, cheese, yogurt are just horrible for me. I've I'm not skinny, but I'm not fat. I have more muscle than fat and am slender, but in very good shape- 5'6 about 140 ibs-ish. I have had problems with losing my period in the past due too being too thin/excersizing. Since I went gluten-free, my monthly problems are acting up again and I'm thinking that it may be due to not having enough fat intake, which may also be causing me to have more constipation than normal (I'm almost wanting to go back to having D now :lol: bsd thought)

any advice?

again, I'm avoiding dairy,seeds,nuts (minus almonds and hemp milk) and potatoes (for now). I like eating lean meats and rarely eat red meat. I think the only source of my fat right now is margerine, mircle whip and the fats natural found in the foods I eat....which isnt much variety since I cant stomach too much, rice, rice pasta, quinoa, buckwheat all kinds of cooked frozen veggies and occasionally I have coconut macaroons as a treat.

This is just so hard since it is difficult for me to stomach high fat foods, so I'm just thinking to find ways to spread it out throughout the day...

Olive oil and canola oil are considered the healthiest oils to cook with.

Some non-nut/seed foods high in healthy fats:

-avocado

-olives - black is better, but green is good, too

-salmon

-mackerel

-herring

-eggs aren't bad- they've got a bad rap, but are super healthy in moderation

I know that's not much, but as you already mentioned, nuts and seeds are a big source... It's good that you can tolerate a few almonds now and then. Hopefully others will come up with some more options!

Olive oil and canola oil are considered the healthiest oils to cook with.

Not so. Both turn toxic when heated to high temperatures.

One of the healthiest fats on this earth is coconut oil. It is a saturated fat (and yes, we absolutely NEED saturated fat to be healthy) which is extremely heat stable and is as a result fabulous for cooking and baking. Just make sure you get cold pressed, non-hydrogenated coconut oil.

For salads, olive oil is still the best choice (coconut oil is usually semi-solid, unless it is summer and very hot and can't be used for salads).

There is no need to eat really lean meats. And beef is actually good for you. I read not long ago that actually, when you cook red meat, most of the fat will change into into mono-unsaturated fat, which is the same kind of fat as olive oil. Saturated animal fat is healthy and needed. People who only get fat from vegetable sources ask for getting sick, as their bodies won't be able to function properly.

Margarine is one of the worst sources of fat (yes, even if it is non-hydrogenated, it is still unnatural). Miracle whip is made from hydrogenated fat, and is extremely unhealthy.

Eggs are a pretty good source of fat, and they are very healthy.

Also, you might want to take some fish oil (cod liver oil in the winter) to get omega 3 fatty acids. We all get too many omega 6 fatty acids, and not enough omega 3 in our diet.

True. The healthiest fats to cook with are saturated fats. It's not a good idea to heat olive oil beyond "medium" heat (on the stove) but you can bake with it safely and eat it cold.

Coconut oil is very healthy (virgin, unrefined, organic) but it can be expensive. Coconut butter is good too (basically mashed up coconut meat and oil - whereas coconut oil is just the oil). You can use it as a spread.

Avocado is good. You say you can do almonds so maybe try almond butter on fruit. Hummus might be good too.

Or almond flour. I have been baking some yummy muffins that are grain free using almond meal, eggs and coconut butter. Recipe from SCD.

My family is going nuts over these. They are not low fat. Just to let you know. But...oh....so....yummy and super easy to make.

Blueberry Muffins (Grain Free)

4 Tlb melted butter (or coconut oil or margarine) This morning I made them with only 1 Tlb. They turned out fine but with a bumpier texture. Same taste.

1/3 cup of yogurt (or almond milk or rice milk)

1/3 cup honey (or to taste)

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

2 1/2 cups almond meal/flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (I use frozen and do not thaw them)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

2. Mix wet ingredients together.

3. Mix dry ingredients together.

4. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Fold in blueberries.

5. Pour batter into lined muffin pan (I get 12 muffins out of this recipe).

6. Bake for about 20-25 minutes give or take (watch them), or until tops are light brown.

Thanks so much for the recipe--I'm copying it down right now. I don't worry too much about good fats--I find as long as I stay away from grains and most sugar, I'm ok.

thanks. I actually use smart balance with omega three's- so its a bit healthier for margerine choices <_<

      Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

      @KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

      thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

      Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.
